How To Get Favourite Seat?

Thu Apr 07, 2005 6:18 am

Hello folks,
sorry I am not such experienced  Smile How to get my favourite seat on long flight, let's say emergency exit row seat, particularly on KL flight from AMS to PEK and back. Do you have any tips?

And is there any KLM's 747 seat layout picture available?
Many thanks!

Seat maps for KLM

To get a seat pre-assigned I guess you need to call them KLM folks.

My experience is that choosing the favorite seat is quite impossible (that's my opinion and my experience) even if you arrive to the counter 3 or 4 hours before the flight !!
I've never try trough the net, maybe it is a good thing.

Best way is to work for the airline and have access to the check-in system. That way you can reassign the inconsiderate SOB who has had YOUR seat pre-assigned to him and assign it to yourself ! That's what I used to do (ahhh, I miss those days ! Now I have to use web check-in and hope I get there first !).

I got my preferred seats on just about every flight I fly. And believe it or not the best seats are not necessarily the ones that are always preassigned like exit rows. The exit row seats I think are very overrated and too much hassle to get anyway. Study the seat maps carefully and you'll see how many good seats there are that are equal to or better than exit rows of bulkheads...remember a few for every flight so you have a backup seat if your first choice fails.
I still maintain it doesn't matter if they're preassigned or not, if you get there early enough you can get the good seats quite easily, the airlines will not keep the seats for that long, especially if it is going to be a full flight.

This thread is interesting to me, as all my experience has been with flying USA air carriers (UA, US, AA, DL, CO, etc.) where you can choose your seat usually at the time you purchase your ticket (which is what I do as I always book via the airline's web site).

Is choosing seats at the time of ticket purchase something that is not done for non-USA airlines?

Well, it's pretty easy since there aren't many options.

First, when you book the flight, get a 'good' pre-assigned seat. See www.seatguru.com as already mentioned. Then if you can't get one, keep calling until departure and try and get it assigned. Then if still no luck, check-in online if possible, as early as you can (24 hrs in most cases), and see if seat map shows seats available. Then...worse case get to airport early and get it at check-in time.

Remember that some of the seats, especially exit rows, are blocked off until close to departure date, and often reserved for those with FF status...but often they do become available later.

I'm not sure if I understand the last comment about preassigned seats, but I think I agree with part of it. If you have a preassigned seat, then THAT seat usually yours unless you choose to change it....which is always possible if others are available. But, if you have a preassigned seat, then nobody is gonna take it from you....I think.

actually they aren't........as an elite AA member, I get to choose the emegency exit rows when I purchase my ticket.......the leg space on the exit rows are phenomenal, I've sat next to people who were 6ft 3in+ without any leg room problems.....

some emergency exit rows (usually the first row) doesn't have full recline so I avoid those, and some have "air leaks" which bring in a cold draft so I either avoid those or bring a blanket or sit on the isle seat.......when I travel, I bring the works..home cooked food, laptop, etc..and I love all that extra space, and 1/2 the time, nobody is sitting next to me anyway, so I get an extra seat to put all my stuff...... Big grin

May be the case on AA, but NW/KLM simply blocks those seats online and they are assigned at the airport even if you are an elite member.

My best piece of advice is call or email the airline. I've got a trip coming up on QF and I wanted a window seat in the back of QF's 744s where the fuselage tapers and its 2-4-2 instead of 3-4-3. All I did was send a request email to QF and I got assigned the seats I wanted.

It never hurts to ask, even if you get shot down.

Does it (somewhat) work if you know someone who works for the airline?

Oh, and I have backup plans, too.

This always works: Buy a full fare ticket. (can be very pricey) Almost foolproof on some airlines, especially AS, where you can book exit/close to the front of Y seats w/ full fare tickets even if you don't have MVP/Gold status.

Sometimes works: Check in online for domestic flights. 24 hours before, you CAN get the seat you want!

Rarely works: Asking at the gate. My dad had FC upgrades for AS through the Platinum credit card, and most of the the time flights were full in F. And yes, sometimes they work.

Rarely works: Asking the FA to swap if a person in an exit row is not qualified to sit there.

That's my plan.  Smile

AA I have always been able to select a seat when making a reservation.

NW is a hit or miss on that. I last flew them to Baltimore and was able to get seat assignments for DTW-BWI, BWI-DTW, DTW-STL. I could not get STL-DTW until when I went to check in, and of course wound up sitting in the first row, which online was mapped and marked out for NW Elite members. I had some problems with Continental booking a seat online. As matter of fact, I couldn't even pull up my reservation on their website until about two days before my trip...but when you called their 800 number, it was all there.

I was actually quite surprised. My father, who is a nobody with SkyTeam was able to get one row from the bulkhead reserved on PRG-JFK, and the bulkhead reserved on JFK-PRG. Is this normal? This was an agent doing it in Amadeus I presume, judging by the look of the seat map and the funky typing she was doing.

Some airlines let you pay for the seat you want - on our upcoming Canada trip we've managed to get our specific seats on AC and Zoom for about £20 in total (money I know but it saves getting to the airport 3-4 hours before and stressing that you won't get a good seat!).

Alternatively, call the airline in advance - usually works, tell them where you want to sit and they can allocate a seat there. Always worked for me - even if it's just a window seat request. If you book online you can normally choose your exact seat - this has worked on several flights of mine.

Cheers,
Noel.

I'd be interested to hear whether that works or not, since my expereinces and comments of other people suggest otherwise. Basically what I was told was that your request goes against your name, but is not marked off a seating plan, so if somebody checks-in before you and grabs that seat, the check-in girl won't know abut your request.

Fortunately, most other airlines have on-line seat selection on their website. That's worked probably 95% of the time for me (even using 3rd parties like Expedia), though you can rarely select exit row seats or other "favourable" seats.

It probably depends on the airline, and what their system is set up to allow. If a seat cannot actually be assigned, it is always possible to enter a simple SSR (Special Service Request) addressed to the checkin agent requesting a particular seat or type of seat - this request is passed to the check-in system, but is only a note to the agent, not an actual assignment - the agent or the people who do the pre-flight are able to see it and action it, or not, as they want.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was talking specifically about QF there. It's the only airline I've encountered that (allegedly) does this. The point is, once the check-in agent reads your note (or SSR or whatever), that seat may have already been assigned to somebody else who checked in before you.

We'll find out, but in the email, the agent I was dealing with did make a distinction between the international and domestic flights. I've sat in the exit row a few times - there's only so far your feet can stretch on an economy recline. I'm just under 6 feet so the extra space is wasted and you can't keep your camera bag on the floor or under the seat. To me that constitutes a waste of time and makes it overrated. FFStatus helps, but provided I remember to ask I always get the seat I want anyway.

Quoting Jacobin777 (Reply 9):

It's all about who and what you know... I just get it blanked out for me if I'm travelling alone and the flight isn't too packed. No questions asked...

If you are doing it yourself You just have to enter it in the system correctly. There are several ways to preassign seats in Amadeus. One method works quite often the other one doesn't. Either way it needs either an airline authority or it is completely provisional and subject to no one of higher importance requesting it etc. Same goes for online bookings. Often Agents don't actually do it correctly and the airlines don't receive the message correctly so will almost certainly discard the request. I don't know how many times I have seen bookings going with unconfirmed 'confirmed' seats because someone has completed the request incorrectly. In my experience airlines do not suffer fools or mistakes gladly.

As has been stated, AA and other US carriers allow those with much status to prebook the exit row.

I have noticed that exit rows on US carriers tend to be much better than those on Eurocarriers.

Whenever you "request" a seat from an online travel agent, or any travel agent, it is just that, a seat REQUEST. These types of travel agents cannot guarantee you the seat you request because they do not have the same real-time information that the airlines have. This makes a lot of people very angry with me when they come to me at the ticket counter in the airport and are stuck in a middle seat, even though their travelocity printout shows them in a window or aisle.

The best advice I can give (if you're not booking directly with the airline), is to just call the airline's reservations phone number and make sure you request the seat that you want in advance, that way it will be guaranteed for you on the day of departure (unless of course, you show up really late!). Perhaps AA allows you to book exit row seats in advance for elite members, however, most other US carriers I'm aware of do not let you do this until the day of departure as it has to be seen in person that you qualify to sit in an exit row on that particular day.

It would be unfortunate if you booked an exit row seat in advance then had some sort of accident which would prevent you from sitting in that seat. I know HP's res system doesn't even allow you to try to assign exit row seats before day of departure. Hope this helps.. just CALL the airline directly to make sure you have those seats you want!

That's not strictly true - most major airlines have real-time Advance Seat Assignment functionality with the big GDS's - Amadeus has real time seating with probably 80 or so carriers. This functionality is as good as that enjoyed by the airline agents, and is talking to exactly the same system. While it's true that no airline GUARANTEES a seat assignment, even those assigned by their own Res agents, this is the next best thing and is normally very reliable.

What experience have you had with QF? I'm interested to hear...

I was flying LHR-SIN and BKK-LHR, both most definitely international flights! Several weeks prior I phoned Qantas, a call which was routed to Oz (but only a national rate call for me). She entered my request into the reservations system, and the check-in girl on the day of the flight commented on the fact that she could she could see my request, but was unable to action it because the seat had already been taken. Same on the return leg.

Expedia and Travelocity usually offer a seating choice - but on QF they don't. I suspect all the agencies are the same.

http://www.qantas.com.au/needhelp/dyn/faq/seating is interesting to read. Note the careful use of "request".

Wow, so essentially nothing is set in stone until you actually check in for the flight? I wonder why she told me those seats were assigned to me then? Well in any case, I'll arrive in LAX about nine hours before the flight to SYD departs so I can check in as early as they'll let me.

I've chosen seats on Expedia before, plenty of times, and I've always gotten what I've requested.

Incorrect. I manage to get an emergency exit row seat at least 90% of the time. The trick is to call as soon as your flight opens for seat allocations, i.e. 90 days before departure. Being a Platinum Elite of course also helps. I normally call the Flying Dutchman elite helpdesk, not KL reservations.
