This is one of the more obvious uses for the 777 anybody's thought up recently.

I think CO will have a strong case. UA is asking for SFO-CAN, which is also a strong case. What are the other US airlines requesting for 2007?

And will be shut down again (and I say that as a Delta fan). If there is obivously so much demand for US-China service (pax AND freight), why don't the 2 countries try to reach an open skies agreement? Too much protecting each countries own airlines from too much competition?

1. The Chinese carriers are not yet in a position to compete in an unrestricted Open Skies environment; and

2. Managed frequency growth allows for traffic increases without massive fare discounting to stimulate demand.

I am surprised they are applying for Shanghai so early...has this ever happened before, 2 years out?

I don't know about that. DL is already the DOT's back up carrier if AA's plan for '06 (out of ORD) doesn't materialize.

DL's chances for 2007 are as good as it gets methinks.

Why are all the Asian flights starting up and being applied for leaving out of EWR? Is it because of the population in the region, connections or what? Seems like the IAH-Tokyo flight does fairly well. Anyway just wondering.

Probably just a matter of time before CO applies for PEK and/or PVG out of IAH but right now, DOT's priority is to increase North-East USA/China non-stop flights.

I can see about the financial aspect, I guess I am just always thinking about myself and Tourism. We had planned to go to China before SARS hit a few years ago. We were going IAH-LAX on CO then LAX to Bejieng on JAL with a stop in Tokyo. I hope we will get non stop flights to China one day out of IAH, sure would be a nice addition. Anyways, I am happy for CO and hopefully they will get these routes.

The 2004 agreement raises the number of weekly flights from 54 to 249, phased in until 2011. Next year another round of negotiations will begin, with the US pushing for full Open Skies. See:

Nice to know, although only a BK filing could lead to AA not being able to operate that route.
