It's camouflage paint. When it coats the bottom of the airplane, it makes it difficult to see it when viewed from the ground against a blue sky!

Leaking lav juice is the real culprit.

Maybe AF was trying a new wash-as-you-fly mechanism using leaking toilet fluid. The experiment failed.

Hi,

I would be amazed if it were blue flush fluid because...
Airbus 320's don't use that!
The 320 lav system works with normal water which comes from the same reservoir as the potable water. The LAV system is also serviced at the rear of the 320's.

Perhaps old versions of the 320 use the system with the blue lav fluid, but I've never heard of that.

I have noticed this blue-flush liquid many times on Air France planes!

Speaking of Air Frances dirty livery. I was in CDG on the 31st of March and got close to an AF 773ER and it has already gotten sooo dirty!

The blue is not liquid. It is paint that was not able to be washed off after some kids tried to paint the boeing dreamliner livery on the bus!

Definetly blue juice. It looks like someone didn't make sure that the excess drained out before they closed the fill cap, or didn't make sure that the fill cap was securely latched before they finished servicing the plane.

The blue on the fuselauge is actually coded French for "What will Northwest replace its DC-9s with?"

The thing that amazes me about it is that it is so deep in color. The stuff i have seen spilled on the tarmac usually looks a lot more "watery" in comparison.

And it's the toilet "flush" blue flued stuff. The vent obvously came open mid-flight or something seeing as how it's like going backwards on the aircraft suggesting the wind sprayed it along the side of the aircraft.

Sabenaboy is right. A320's(and just about all the other Airubuses) use potable water for the toilets. Why does this A320 have blue liquid?

Could it be some kind of hydraulic fluid that leaked? That doesnt look like a potable water or lav access door to me...most Airbuses have those either on the other side closer to the middle or towards the back of the plane.

maybe a plane landed, and somehow, the blue stuff from the toilets got out from a rough landing, then the AF plane landed on the same runway right afterwards and the stuff was splashed all over the belly by the nose wheels...just a thought.lol

Now, seriously, it really looks like lav juice, but if you guys say A320's use potable water for the toilets I have no idea...

unless AF is different, the lav panel on NWA is at the rear of the plane, and they don't have a fill port in the front....

The LH A320s I worked on all had the vacuum toilet system with the holding tank in the area behind the bulk cargo compartment. The service panel is on the right side, just behind the bulk cargo door.
BTW, it was also serviced with a small amount (about 20 liters) of blue fluid for desinfection pruposes and to dilute the sh*t. Flushing is done with potable water from the potable water tank, which on the LH A320 is sited in the snake pit, the area between the forward cargo rear bulkhead and the forward bulkhead of the center wing box (in this area you´ll also find the aircon mixing chamber and the recirculation fans).

I assume that the vacuum toilet system is an option and airlines are free to order conventional toilets with a tank right beneath the bowl. In this case the drain lines and the servicing panel would be right beneath the toilet (which in this case would take the place of LH´s coat storage cabinet.
The door visible in the picture right behind the toilet service panel is the access to the aircraft batteries and the crew oxygen bottles, plus an avionics cooling blower fan. You´ll also find the drains and water traps of the captain´s pitot tubes in there.

Some A320's do have a forward lav service station. You guys are correct, it does use water from the potable water system for flushing. But a few gallons of "blue juice" are put into the bottom of the holding tank after it has been flushed out to make it smell better during the flight as well as keeping contamination from sticking to the bottom of the tank on the first few uses when it is empty and dry!! It looks like the service port was not allowed to completely drain the residual before it was capped or the dump valve is allowing leakage by it.

Yes, you're right. It's either green or orange. I don't know what was going on in my head when I typed pink. Type IV is green and Type I is a red-ish orange depending on the amount of water that it is mixed with.

THe A320s are like the 737NGs, where they do flush the lavs with clean, potable water. However, when you empty the tanks you do pump in some blue juice for both a deoderizer and disenfectant.

Which, on an unrelated note, I've been told is why WN ramp uniforms are blue. Just in case you get a spill on you.

Im not trying to hijack this thread in any way...im just clarifying the glycol issue. Type I is either orange or pink (ones ethanol and the other slips my mind) and deices the aircraft at a warmer temperature. Type IV is green, served at "room" temperature, looks like a ball of snot in the holding tank, and is anti-ice.

Pink/redish type I deicing fluid is propylene glycol and the orangy type I is ethylene glycol.
