No More Song In LAS?

Fri Apr 08, 2005 3:23 am

I just returned from having a great time in LAS. I also came to the realisation that I didn't see any DL Song planes... lots of 752/762/764 and a few 738's . I remember seeing Song when I was there last May,though...

They still fly to LAS, but all the flights arrive after 9 PM and depart between 10PM and 1 AM. So if you weren't at McCarran in the late evening, you wouldn't have seen a Song 757.

Why in the world would they have a crazy schedule like that? That's nuts. I would not want a 10PM flight home to the east coast. That would get you in at 4-5AM or something like that.

yeah but its LAS. Most of the traffic, like most things in that town, are all red-eye. Ive always wondered why that was, but I figure people check out and then gamble the rest of the day ( or do whatever they do- ive lived in LAS for a while and just dont see the appeal) and then get on a plane home. Maybe its better for the crews- hopefully everyone is passed out asleep and not pissy from losing money  Smile One of the strangest towns you could ever live in- only in Vegas do you get a traffic jam at 3 am  Smile

Indeed... DAYflyer... I'd bet LAS is on par to have more red-eye departures then any other west coast airport. Red-eyes are generally less expensive and that appeals to the cost-conscious Vegas traveller... the more money for the gambling, the better. Also, red-eyes allow a full day in Vegas before departing, as Amhilde said above.

One of the busiest times of day at LAS is between 9pm and 1am.

I was just wondering as DL is the only US airline to put heavy pax planes into LAS. I wonder if they would ever convert LAS to a 'Song-only' station like UA made it all Ted ? DL is the 4th largest carrier by volume there (UA is #3).

To me, Vegas has always been one of those places that you cram as much as possible into a short period of time. Therefore arriving and leaving late are part of the game. Around 10pm you can see a line plane 10-15 deep spaced for approach from the east. Quite a sight.

That won't happen, as Delta's philosophy has been to keep them out of their 3 main hubs at CVG, SLC and especially ATL, except for some MX flights.
Also, DL puts some 2150 seats in the ATL-LAS market each day, which would equal to some 11 Song flights. The market is simply too big for Song, hence why also the majority of flights are on 767s.
And on the red-eyes, as already said LAS is a true 24/7 airport. Unlike other airports which become a ghost town between 11pm and midnight, LAS is still very active until at least 2am. This also allows Song to increase the average fleet usage of their 757s, because if it weren't for those red-eyes, these 4 plans would only be sitting on the ground at some East Coast airport during the night.

Red eye flights, late night flights, are what happens when you want to get your daily utilization rate up into the 13 hr range. This is exactly the how Jetblue has gone about it. ie SLC?

I think the redeye flights to the east coast make perfect sense from LAS.
Of course, if you don't like it, there are daytime options too (just not on Song).
None shall pass!!!!
