L-1011 Lovers - Please Read!

Dear Members,
I know there is a huge following out there who are in love with the L-1011. I've heard it referred to as 'ahead of its time' and 'more advanced than the competition.' I myself have no knowledge of this plane, other than I think it is the second best-looking airliner of all time (behind the 777). What made it so advanced for its day? Any info would be appreciated, as I have no technical knowledge of this aircraft.

What made it so advance was its autopilot capabilities. It was (is) capable of making auto landings in Cat 3B conditions. Also, it used 4 independant hydraulic systems compared to many of the competitors 3.

Along with the autopilot, the TriStar also had a flying horizontal stabilizer which took the place of the standard elevator/movable stabilizer setup. The plane used a system called Direct Lift Control (DLC) during landing. DLC allowed the airplane to maintain a constant pitch angle during approach and used the spoilers to control the aircraft on the glidepath. TriStar 500s have an active control system (ACS) for the outboard ailerons which allowed the wing to be lengthened without any beef-up of wing structure. ACS would deflect the ailerons to counteract any wind gusts or undesireable loading on the wing. These features make the L-1011 the smoothest riding jetliner in the sky.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

It is too bad that Lockheed in the late 70s couldn't have developed an advanced version of the L-1011 with engines from P&W and GE instead of just Rolls Royce and with a FBW system.
