747SP Iran Air EP-IAB, Seen It?

Sun Apr 10, 2005 2:11 am

I'm just curious if anyone has seen Iran Air's B747SP EP-IAB recently ?

We haven't received any reports of that registration since september 2004.

Has it been stored, or is she in service but we haven't heard about it ?
There are no photos on A.net after that date either...

Full history: http://www.747sp.com/history.asp?20999

Sightings are very interesting, please let us know!

I was in Tehran about 3 weeks ago.

I saw EP-IAB on March 15th and again on the 17th at Mehrabad. The a/c was towed on the apron, after or before a flight...

Is EP-IAB their last SP in service? How long until they retire it?

Until IranAir is be free to buy the aircraft it needs to replace its ageless fleet, when this stupid and insane U.S embargo will be lifted.

Whatever happened to EP-IAC? Did they never repair it? Did they bring it back to Iran somehow or what...

Of course it's a stupid and insane embargo!! We should all reward rogue and terrorist-supporting regimes!!!

Politics aside, I'm actually impressed that they are able to keep the a/c flying. What destinations do they use the SP on anyway??

In general, I'll leave politics out of this forum. I just felt one political (and un-called for) jab deserved another in kind.

But thanks for the answer to my question.

That was not an uncalled for political jab. AirxLiban actualy made a comment mostly based in civil aviation, and not politics. As it is, people who fly with Iran Air are forced to fly on aircraft that, no matter how well maintained, are getting very old and do not have the same kind of parts support that, say NW has. Iran Air Engineering has done yeoman's work over the past 26 years in keeping aircraft in the sky, safe, without support from their original manufacturer, but it is unfair to the people of Iran and the passengers of Iran Air to keep them flying on craft that are not ideal, especially when the carrier has the money to do a wholesale fleet replacement simply because of disagreements between 2 idiotic governments.

It was an uncalled-for political jab. I'm sure you would not appreciate it if I let my true feelings about ignorant and arrogant French policies be known.

But, like I said, I usually don't discuss politics in an aviation forum. So let's allow the subject to expire get back to talking about what we all joined this forum for -- Airplanes!!!

Our records show it's been stored in Teheran.

9/5/2004 EP-IAB Iran Air Flight CGN Flew a unique approximately one hour sightseeing trip for a group of aviation enthusiasts.

How great it feels to be a part of that!

Glad to see EP-IAB is still in service!  Smile

Considering the evident efficiency and the results, I would suggest U.S administration to change its tactics...

EP-IAA became airworthy again and went back to service after EP-IAC was WFU and used for spares.

FlySSC-

Where did you hear that about IAA? Not doubting you, just curious your source, if it can be revealed... I had heard IAA was WFU just about the same time as IAC, and the complete lack of recent photos or sitings would seem to indicate that if it is back in service, it's only been very recent...

Any more info?

Chazzerguy,

That was told me by Iran Air ground staff and mechanic staff at Mehrabad about 3 weeks ago, as I was questionning them about the -SP's ...

I saw clearly EP-IAB being towed right in front of us. There was another -SP quite far away but I couldn't see the registration..

IR needs desperately new a/c now to expand AND to replace the oldest ones. The staff told me also they have more and more maintenance problems with the A300B2 too

How often does the Iran Air 747SP come to LHR?

I want to be there to capture it on film. Please let me know.
Thanks!

I have only recently joined Airliners.net but I am absolutely amazed at how people go off on one about subjects TOTALLY unrelated to aviation. Why? People if you want to engage in political debates please, join forums set up for that very purpose and let people who want to post and read about aeroplanes do so without having to read all this rubbish that springs up when somebody gets on their soapbox! No offence to any individual or slur on any political belief, but there is such thing as a time and a place and this aint one of them!

Just wondering why Iran Air does not order new Russian jets. I am well aware that they would love to have either A or B aircraft, but surely new build IL96 and TU204s would go some way towards easing the burden on their ageing 747 / A300 fleet. I know the Russian jets are not as fuel efficient as western aircraft, but I'm sure they have to be more fuel efficient than the older 747s and A300s. Plus, I'm sure Iran would be able to negotiate some kind of workshare, so that their industry benefits from ordering Russian planes?

They actually have at times. They even build AN-24s in Iran. They were also allowed a small order of Airbus and Fokker aircraft after the US shot down an IR A300 with 290 passengers and crew.

CalAir, unfortunately you are spot on! There's a lot of clutter and background noise on this forum....you just have to sift through it. What a waste of time and energy  Sad

I don't really know. I know Iran Air uses the 747SP mainly on their Teheran - Tokyo route, with a stop in Peking.

But it does go to LHR, just don't know when..

A USN Tico class CG, that was engaged in a surface battle with Iranian PT Boats, fired on the aircraft with an SM-2 missile in 1988. The Naval surface battle was in the Persan Gulf, near the Staits of Hormuz. IIRC, I believe the US Navy Cruiser was the USS Vinciness, is that correct? I think there were 4 or 5 PT Boats that were attacking a French flagged tanker when the Vinciness came to the aid of the tanker. During the surface battle, two IIAF F-4Es were holding in the area. The IA A-300 (not part of the battle) flew above the F-4s and the Vinciness thoiught she was under air attack by an F-4. The missile had hit the Airbus before anyone realized the mistake.

The US did pay for the loss of the aircraft and everyone aboard.

EP-IAC is in Teheran at this point... Not sure the ferry date, or any details... From what I've heard and seen, the plane was not terribly damaged... But I would assume it probably was patched up just good enough to get back to Teheran...

Here's what we know:

If anyone has any further details, please give Tommy and I a tip!

It's almost laughable that the survivors of Iran 655 were paid $300k for wage earning victims, and half that for non wage earners. The PA103 victims are worth $10 million...
