DEN Blizzard

Sun Apr 10, 2005 11:41 pm

For all you UA lovers and haters, DEN is closed today and UA has cancelled most of their flights in and out. How much is this going to cost the Company, and how much is going to be passed to us, the employees?
I love the rumble of a 727 takeoff in the morning!

Why single out UA?? Frontier has ALL its operations in Denver and is similarly adversely affected. At least UA has a broader network and other hubs to route passengers in and out of.

In annual budgeting, airlines make plans for a number of bad weather days and associated costs. Denver has had very few this year. Today's cancellations will be well within UA's plans and budget.

Here at AWAC this has affected us somewhat, but our DEN operation is somewhat limited, so it hasnt hit us too hard. One thing to note though. Because of DEN, we ran two BAe-146s in revenue service non-stop from ASE-ORD. Very fun stuff.

Allegiant has cancelled its charter operations for Apple out of DEN today because of the storm. The FNL and COS trips are also in danger of being cancelled.

I wouldn't say its closed. ID BE CAREFUL SAYING AN AIRPORT IS CLOSED. Tecnically they dont often close, they just don't except flights. There are flights arriving at DIA right now! Im tracking a few flights landing at DIA. I majority of planes have been diverted, returned to origin or not left at all. To name a few.

UA 36: returned to SFO
UA 44 HNL-DEN diverted to SLC
AC 1039 returned to YYZ
UA 1423 MCO-DEN diverted

This of course is just a a few.

I am visiting family in Denver right now and have been watching local news coverage of the storm. They just showed a live report from DIA and the airport is not "closed". However, no flights will depart before 5:00pm but they are allowing some flights to land, according to the report.
The weather here is nasty to say the least. Here in Douglas County, (just south of Denver) we already have 10 inches on the ground and they are saying on the news that it will continue to snow for 14 more hours! I am not optimistic about catching my flight home to Hawaii tomorrow.

Airlines, TV, and websites might say it's closed (and for all practical purposes, it is) but an airport isn't officially closed until the entity that operates the airport has FAA issue a NOTAM that says the airport is closed.

We see a similar misuse of the term when it's foggy out. The airport goes below landing minimums, and flights can't get in, and we start diverting them. Someone (TV, whoever) starts in with the "airport is closed" bit, when it's just below minimums. If the RVR had been fluctuating right at minimums, some flights will get in, and some won't, but the public thinks -nobody- is getting in since the TV incorrectly said the airport was "closed."

DEN is not closed, but all passenger flight departures have been cancelled until at least 5:00 pm MDT. A plane can still take off and land at DEN, but the individual airlines decided to suspend operations until weather conditions improve.

By the way, the weather is as bad as the press is reporting. I can't see more than 1/4 of a mile from where I live in east Denver.

When I went onto jetBlue.com (My homepage) I looked at the weather advisory and it said flights involving Denver were delayed 8 hours due to snow I had a good laugh because it is in the 70's in NY. My cousin lives in Denver so I will talk to her to see how bad it is, sounds bad from you guys.
Let's say basically no one is leaving DEN today. Not many people will get their either.

It is really bad here. The one road leading into DIA (Pena Blvd.) was treacherous according to others who came in during the storm. Cars spun out... and visibility hasn't been great either.

The crew lounge here is full of FA's and pilots just waiting for things to let up, me being one of them!  Smile I hope it stops soon....

Cheers!

The roads are pretty crazy here. The airport is open, and the runways are aparently clear ( I just saw a pic on TV), but the carriers can't keep the planes de-iced. So nothing taking off until 5:00pm MST>

They are unable to de-ice at the moment, too. So, I don't think anything is getting out if it DOES get in.

well, here in BOI, F9 Jet express left at 0700 on time, and UA at 0753 and 0950 and all day were cancelled.
F9 Jet Express had their originating OMA-DEN flight divert to GJT, then flew onto BOI. I never would have considered us a DEN alt. Maybe QX was having that plane fly DEN-BOI and was trading out with a QX operated routed plane anyway.
I was talking to an F9 employee going to Nuggets game Sat and jokingly said will it be 70 degrees or a foot of snow? Didn't realize they were going to get a lot of snow. Anyway, they didn't make it back home on Sun!

It's 6:30pm here in Denver and we have 20 inches on the back porch and it's still falling. My nephew's High School in Highlands Ranch is closed tomorrow as roads out here are impassable.
Flights are still grounded at DIA as of latest local news report.

Wests ide of COS isn't bad at all, the parking lot isn't even covered. However up in Woodland Park (where I work) is supposedly 1-2 feet of snow.

The interstates and highways out of town are all closed (I-25 springs to castle rock, pueblo to the NM border, US-83, US-24 east to Limon. The airport though is still open.

Both F9 flights out of MSY were cancelled today. Of course, both flights were booked to capacity and being a Sunday here, rebooking people onto other airlines was impossible. The worse part of it all was when Sabre crashed for a good half an hour. The day could have been worse, but I don't see how.  Smile I'm glad to be home.

Weren't we just talking about how cool the new system was?? LOL. I guess the worst always can happen.

What I don't get is that DEN is supposed to be "blizzard proof" with its runway configuration and numbers. I mean, with 6 runways, you would think they could keep one clear.

Most of the time with the heavy snow and strong winds, once they de-iced a plane by the time it got out to the runway it had to go back to and go through that again. Technically the airport was always open with limited operations allowed.

I just spent all day trying to get from LAX to Indiana for college. I was originally routed through DEN and with everything cancelled it was a mess. UA though is doing the best possible job to route people around the conditions. I ended up getting on a special add on flight to ORD to help all the stranded pax. Every single flight out of LAX today was completely full to every city they serve, but people weren't irate or screaming. People seem to be handling the mess in ORD and LAX well even though flights are delayed significantly throughout the system, but that is just the perception of spending 15 hours in transit today including standing by for 5 flights. I feel sorry to the people in Colorado that are stuck.

The runways are clear all right, it's the de-icing that is causing the problems. The snow is really being driven by the wind, and by the time the plane is ready to take off, it's back for more de-icing fun.

The snow tapered off this afternoon, leading to hope of a quick in and our blizzard, but the snow has picked up again now.

I noticed that the regular F9 214 into AUS was late, then I remembered seeing a huge blizzard on the radar. UA didn't even come last night. F9 ended up being over two hours late. Not too bad considering that monstrosity blizzard that decided to park right over the airport.

my parents live just north of boulder and said it is ridiculous. the power has been going in and out and in my years growing up there never did the power "go in and out" so thats strange. school was cancelled up there--which is lame because when i was a kid we never had snow days--its colorado!

the airport cancellations make me ask why do the seats in an airport have to be so damn uncomfortable? i hate sitting in them at the gate, let alone having to sleep in them! i can understand back in the day when anyone was allowed near a gate, the seats were designed to be uncomfortable to ward off any riff-raff from sleeping across a few seats...but now when on ticketed passengers are allowed at a gate, the only time people would sleep on seats is when warranted ie airport "shutdowns"

I took a look through our statements here at the Nat'l Weather Service, and with a quick scan of them the highest total I see is 28.0" near Conifer, CO. For some reason snowfall information from DEN is missing...as is a good portion of their climatologic data from yesterday. Guess we see how well the automated observing system works.

With all the flights cancelled, I was able to take some time taking pictures of the stranded planes. Not sure if they'll be accepted, though. If they are, you'll be able to see many UA planes (and a few of the F9 ones) covered in snow and icicles.

Hard to believe most of the snow was melted by the next day!

My Father and Sister were in town from Michigan, they rebooked for today instead of yesterday, and the weather was nice enough to take them into the mountains, and go gambling at the casinos yesterday  Smile

Wind and visibility may have been a factor, they closed down I-70 east of Airport Blvd. I believe for most of the day Sunday.
