How Many Hours Before Solo?

Tue Apr 12, 2005 9:07 am

Okay, for those of you on this forum that either have your Private Pilot's License, or are working towards it - how many hours of circuits did you have to do before being cleared to go solo?

Anyone?

Marrrty,

I actually don't have a PPL at the moment, nor am I working on one currently (though would like to soon).

However, I did do a few hours of flying whilst I was still in my University Air Squadron (about 25) and this included circuits and various solo flights, etc.

I didn't go solo until about my 12th Sortie so I had about 2 1/2 hours of actual circuit training (dual) before taking my first actual solo trip (a flight of about 4 minutes). I then went on to do another 5 hours of circuits (half dual and half solo) for the circuit consolidation, which included normal, glide, low-level and flapless circuits.

Are you currently awaiting your first solo? Perhaps you've already been, or maybe your way ahead and already have your licence, etc? If so, how many hours of actual circuit training did you go through before going solo?

On another note, I did a small gliding scholarship when 16 in the grop Vigilant, and went solo after the short 8 hr course (which covered basic handling and circuits, etc). Some guy I did it with managed to solo after just 5 1/2 hours, though I believe the average was still 8 hours in total).

Hope this helps - if I'm repeating myself its because I'm dog tired and need sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

First solo after 11 hours of dual if I remember correctly. This was at WJF in the summer of 1979; a Cessna 150.

2nd best feeling ever.

I soloed with about 120 hours. I started flying when I was 14 and had to wait until 16! Although, I actaully did solo a month before my 16th bday in a glider with 10 hours (because I had more than 40 logged airplane hours).

I had 11.5 hours when I soloed on my 16th birthday. After that I went to get my drivers license... The important things always come first!

First solo flight at about 27 hours...Got my private at 55 hours...
I would reccomend saving all the money up front, then fly at least 3 times a week...You should have it done in about 2-3 months...Unfortunetely I didn't do that...First hour logged was on 06/08/99, soloed on 02/06/00, and recieved my private on 07/08/00...So a little over a year from start to finish...

Actually, getting the private rating is indeed possible at the minimum 40 hours. My Dad got his at 40 due to his skills and the drive of the instructors. I may begin flight training at some point in the future but have not quite made the decision yet. It'll take me some practice but I'm certain that I will be able to do it within the standard amount of time.

I soloed at around 13 hours. I was very nervous. When I was cleared to take-off I remember checking if the doors were closed and looked at the cabin and it was empty. I had that feeling of a tourist lost in an unfamiliar country. I just said to my-self Holly S--t I can't believe I'm doing this, what am I doing flying a plane. Once I trimmed the controls on the climb I felt a little more relaxed.

Soloed after 8 hours dual and got my PPL in 45 hours. I will never forget the feeling of that first solo flight (or the bucket of cold water after)  Smile

I soloed with 13.5 hours and took my check ride with 46.5. I was terrified at my solo as I had no idea I was going to solo... my instructor sprung it on me. But it was one of the most exhilerating experiences of my life!

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses. I'm at 18 hours, and will probably be cleared to solo within another hour or two of dual. From the sounds of some of the responses, I think things may be different here in Canada within the last few years, as the instructors are telling me that 18 - 20 hours is the norm.

Regardless, it is a ton of fun, and something I've wanted to do since I was a kid.

Cheers, and thanks once again for all the responses.

My instructor picked me late one afternoon at the Bridgeport, CT airport and I flew the C-150 back to MacArthur (ISP). By the time we arrived at ISP the beacon was on, indicating that night flight conditions were in effect. After I landed the airplane, he told me to stop short of the runway intersections, got a clearance from the tower, got out and sent me on my way.
I didn't know he had planned to have me solo until that moment!! I was too busy concentrating on my flying to get a case of the nerves and so I technically soloed at night!!
I had 14 hours flight time when I soloed.
