Key West (KEYW/EYW) Aircraft History?

Tue Apr 12, 2005 11:48 am

I was just flipping through an old Airliners magazine and saw that Piedmont had service to Key West using an F-28 on their Inter-Florida Shuttle routes. I also heard that Eastern flew 727s down there, but they pulled out due to noise restrictions.

I've flown into EYW a few times, and each time I go down again, more and more jet service seems to be starting.

Anyone have any history on what airlines served Key West in the past?

Air Sunshine was based in EYW with DC-3's and CV-440's until Air Florida bought them out in the late 70's. QH flew B-737's in there on a scheduled basis for several years.

Eastern DID fly a B727 once daily in the late 80's
from MIA-EYW-MIA. I remember it was an afternoon
flight, I probably have an old timetable somewhere.

Right now you will get DL/DL Connection RJ service, that is about the only "big" commercial jets flying down there at this moment. American Eagle sends plenty of AT7's from MIA. CO Connection/Gulfstream sends Beech 1900's. Those are the ones I can think of...

USAirways Express (PSA) recently started flying CRJ's in there from FLL. One of them is routed DCA-MCO-FLL-EYW-FLL-MCO-DCA. As far as past service, Pan Am Express served EYW at least 5 times daily from MIA with J32's and occasionally DH7's. In the late 80's, I had the chance to fly both Piedmont and Eastern to/from EYW. We rode on an F-28 down there and a 727-100 on the way back to MIA. I believe that National may have flown 727's in there from MIA as well for a time.

As I recall National flew there too, with Electras anyway-- maybe 727s too.

PBA also flew 402s, Navajos, and whatever else was in their fleet. Dolphin Air brought Embraer Bandits and TWOtters down.

I believe that the short lived TW Express also was here, with a couple Dash 7s to PBI..

National did using convairs and Electras. National also served Marathon in the Keys with convairs in the 60's. I still cannot find an OAG that shows Eastern in Key West with scheduled flights. My timetable and OAG collection goes back to 1954.

MTH...the heart of the Florida Keys! I remember American Eagle flying SF-340Bs down from MIA up until around 2000 or so.

National had 727-100's to Key West for a while, before Eastern's stint with 727's. That was prior to adding the 600' extension to the runway to make it 4800'.

Does anyone know why there is no RJ service from EWR/LGA/JFK-EYW on CO or DL? It seems like it could also be a destination for B6 with an E190. Fares are very high from the NY area, so more competition is needed.

There is no way an ERJ can take off from EYW and land in NYC with a healthy load. Delta has heavy weight restrictions on their EYW-ATL flights even.

It hasn't stop them from increasing service. They are up to 3 daily flights with an additional flight on Saturday's. We also have a friendly relationship with NQX in the event of any necessary service adjustments.

Not that it is going to happen, but if the demand was there an airline could fly nonstop down to EYW and make an enroute stop on the return like in FLL, MCO, MIA, or TPA. Similar to what many airlines did or are doing into OGG, KOA. DL used to route the L15 LAX-OGG-HNL-LAX because of those same restrictions.

If this is the case, why wouldn't the city pay to have the runway extended (if at all possible)? It seems that if LCCs could run nonstops from Northeastern Cities, it would greatly stimulate the tourism indusrty in Kew West. Right now, the average family of four living in NYC would much rather hop on JetBlue/Song, and go to FLL for Spring Break. They are probably saving half the money (which is a lot for 4 people) and are avoiding connections.

Key West is an island that is only like 1 mile by 3 miles. They could maybe extend the runway 500' but it isn't worth wasting the capital.
Aside from that Key West itself doesn't need the tourism. It sees plenty (current service and cruise ships) and it isn't like the town is growing. Only the other area keys would benefit from additional air service to the bottom key. Most visitors to the Keys actually prefer driving the keys from Miami. It isn't until about the 3rd or 4th trip that you look into flying to EYW.

the environmentalists are against us extending our runway as it would "hurt" the mosquito infested salt ponds @ the end of runway 27... there IS room to add maybe a 1000 foot overrun, but not @ the end of runway 9 without ending up in the Hyatt Windard & Best Western Ambassador's back yard. The end of 9 is only about 1100 feet away from the water, seperated by some mangrove trees then A1A South (US1 - South Roosevelt). Lots of spotters like to sit on the sidewalk and shoot planes as they approach Rwy 27.. they're barely 150 feet above the ground when they fly over the road!

ASA also takes some heavy payload restrictions out of EYW. A few days ago they could only take 50 people and their bags on the ATL flights... but its actually RP that takes the biggest hits.. their ERJ 135s to MCO can sometimes only take 25.

PSA to FLL has been doing very well, averaging 47/48 pax per flight and the restrictions DO exist, but they only book to 47... but have been able to fly out with 50 on board.
