Suvarnabhumi Airport Opening Date? (BKK)

Wed Apr 13, 2005 3:17 am

Any news on the opening date for the new Bangkok airport? I've browsed the "official" website but I'm not convinced all the information is accurate - and indeed couldn't find the date as it was rather slow a few minutes ago.

Thanks

Geoff, according to this month's AW magazine it will open March 2006. Here is the article:

Noisy Aircraft 'Train' Birds

According to an Airports of Thailand (AOT) official, small and noisy aircraft have begun flying over Thailand's new $3.7-billion Suvarnabhumi International Airport in an effort to 'train' birds to avoid the area when it opens next year.

"This is to train birds to avoid being near flight paths when the airport opens so that they will not be in danger and no accidents happen." the official said. The opening of Bangkok's new airport has been put back by six months to March 2006 due to a delay in construction.

Thanks - I was actually considering buying AW today but decided against it because there was nothing interesting (to me) on the cover!

Put back 6 months? More like 18 months as one article I googled before posting said September 2004!

Cheers

Geoffm,

thank you so much for asking - I've been wondering the same things, and yes, Suvarnabhumi's website is a masterpiece of death by irrelevant detail.

I'm also interested to know what airlines will be moving to it and when. It's likely that everyone in Star (ANA, SAS, Asiana, SQ, LH, Lauda, UA, LX soon enough) should be keen on moving over to coordinate with TG, but what about BA & co.?

On that score, they say (on the site) Don Muang's going to be all-domestic: I'll believe it when I see it.

According to a Bangkok Post report in early-April, the Minister of Transport conceded that Suvarnabhumi Airport's opening is delayed till "sometime next year" - he wouldn't say when - ostensibly wanting first to see how the Songkran Festival (when workers down tools to go home) and the upcoming rainy season affects construction.

But he promised that it will definitely open in 2006.

When in Thailand in March I read an article in the Bangkok Post which said that the construction works would be completed by the original opening date of September 2005, but inauguration was delayed because of testing of safety and security systems, navigation systems etc.

Now, which version of the story is true? ...  Wink

Anyway, as I´m going to live on Thailand´s eastern seaboard, I can´t wait for this new airport to open as it will be much closer to my home!

There is no official openning date yet but we guess that it would be in the latter half of next year. Most of the main construction are about to be completed soon. Interior of the terminal are to be started this June. About a month ago the Prime Minister said that by the end of September the aircraft will land in the Suvarnabhumi Airport. But I am sure that it won't be commercial flight since there has no time for test run of the totally new airport and new systems.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 5):

Why? What's wrong with Don Muang? Have never been before but am due to fly in on my honeymoon this summer.

I agree with Lufthansa747; there's no point of keeping Don Muang open when you spend xx amount of Baht to open a brand new airport. Officials said a while back that they were considering keeping Don Muang open for low-cost carriers but the last I heard is that Don Muang will close for all scheduled and charter traffic and that the whole airport will revert back to the military.

There's nothing wrong with Don Muang. I've seen far worse airports. True, it's getting a little old but it's clean, there's plenty to eat (Thai food  thumbsup  ), the usual shopping etc. In fact I find it very spacious once airside. Some airports you're struggling for elbow room or a place to sit, but I've never had that problem at DM.

Nothing wrong with Don Muang except that a world class airport needs to be opened to compete with neighboring airports like SIN - KUL - HKG to start.

An airport often leads to a new facelift and big time business to the country. This airport is loooooooooooooonnng overdue though.
