Interest In The A380 On This Site

Wed Apr 13, 2005 4:27 am

Like it, hate it, or just tolerate it, I've not seen as much posted about any other aircraft as I have of the A380.

777-200LR has come (and gone, in News terms) - good plane.

787 gets news of orders when they happen - good, possibly great plane - one day..

What is it about the A380 in particular that generates SO MUCH heated interest on the site, even when nothing newsworthy is happening?

I recognise that we're likely to see a fair amount of A vs B, and possibly some out and out crap too. Apologies to those serious plane lovers if it gets out of hand.
The A380's got to be the plane that generates the most interest on the site.

Seriously, Guys and Girls, I'm interested to see some, informed (or at least rational) views, observations, and so on, as to why.

Go for it.

Really, I think it's as simple as: "This is the new kid on the block right now." You mention the 200LR, but that's just a derivative...hard to get people's interest hooked on a derivative.

My point is, I'm willing to bet you see the same kind of tilt in the number of posts towards the 787 in 2 years as it nears its first flight.

VERY astute of you to note that, Astuteman!  Wink

As to why the A380 generates so much interest here, it may have something to do with the fact that this just happens to be the largest passenger airplane ever produced and is bound to be watched carefully among all aviation lovers. Plus it of course carries the undertones of the "passing of the baton" if you will, from the hitherto leaders in commercial airplanes (Boeing and the US) to a different player (Airbus and EU).

Further, most of us havent really seen such an ambitious airplane project unfold, at least not in our lifetimes.

That's my $0.02!

Like Lemurs said, it is the new thing right now, and it is about to have its first flight, which is always a big thing. Add that to the fact that it is a huge four engine double decker, and you get a lot of excitement. The 787 will have its day, but right now it's all about the A380.

Even though myself and others think it is not the most visually appealing plane, I am sure as hell going to be going out to JFK to see it fly in. Wouldn't miss it for the world.  Smile

I think it has to do with people psychology

1) US vs. non-us manufacturer (US vs. EU)
2) mine is bigger than yours
3) jealousy
4) genuine fascination by all a.netters.......especially by those who believe/dislike/don't care vs. those who disbelieve/like/don't care
5) this is THE biggest pax plane ever built, and its being built "in front of our eyes" (i.e. realtime)...
6) those who like to put in their 2 cents worth like my post right now...  Wink

I completely agree with that. I think something to add though is the fact that this plane has another thing to over come. Places to land... It is so large that there aren't a huge number or airports that can handle it and the number of paxs it could carry.

When the thing flies (and will fly, hopefully well) and Airbus begins to report the official capabilities of the airplane, I bet a lot of the crap that is dished out now towards it here on a.net will be silenced.

Dude we can change the subject to politics, gay marriage, or cars or sports, or colleges; you get the same reaction: humans fear change, fear does not only imply being afraid, one can be angry, jealous, bitter, etc. I could go deeper into the psychology of it and get yelled at by people who insist that is not the case, they are they're own proof IMO, hence I rest my case.

These asthetic comments like it is "ugly" or pretty" are exaggerations and subjective.

My point is that this has NOTHING to do with the airplane, its manufacturers or the country is was put together in. I hope other people see that and not come up with excuses.

I think 787 has the same huge interest as A380 as both planes are milestones for the industry. As for 777LR this is just a new version of already flying aircraft hence interest is lower, specially that there is no visual difference.

I'll tell you why...

At first, nobody thought this project would take off. Many thought Airbus was full of hot air, but as time is passing more jaws are dropping. Wow, I can't believe they built this. From the computer-aided drawings to the assembly line, I'm still shocked anyone would build something so big...

Now say of Boeing really stuck with the Blended Wing aircraft, there would be...in my opinion...10 fold more posts just because the design is different. But for now, this thing is THE HOTTEST thing, and I’m very excited to see what will come from all of this.
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

You are right, the 787 WILL have its day, because all of us enthusiasts will be absolutely fascinated to see how the technology step change performs, just as we are to see the size step change perform.

Don’t confuse controversy with interest. Many of the folks on this forum are not the least bit interested in the A380, but that doesn’t stop them from shouting off about how much they hate it. The comments questioning the very airworthiness of this plane are rarely the result of any true curiosity. Rather, they are usually just another attempt to bash what the poster has subjectively and prematurely decided is an unworthy aircraft.

There is a lot behind, as whether the future development lies on huge or medium-capacity airoplanes, whether Boeing will try to keep pace, etc etc etc! So, the spectrum of topics around the 380 are huge and often contain many market-related questions..

If we had A.net 40 yrs ago when Boeing was developing the 747, we would have seen this same interest placed on it too, probably even more since the 747 was so much larger than anything flown before. While the A380 is big, its not as big of a step up in size as the first 747 was.

I agree with that  Smile
There's obviously loads of interest - it's a new aircraft, it's a big event. 350 people have put "a380" in the keywords box (not aircraft drop down list) of the search engine in the last 48 hours, 26 keyword searches for the 747. 42 for Concorde if anyone's interested  Wink

It'll be interesting to see how much interest there is when the 787 is at the stage the A380 is currently at.
