IAD's Shuttle Fill With Smoke

Wed Apr 13, 2005 4:43 am

This happened on april 1st. I was disembarking an air france 777 around 7pm or so in IAD. It was a long flight from CDG (well i sat next to the most polite 7 year old on the flight thank god) and as usual everyone was boarding the shuttle to customs. anyway right when the shuttle is lowered from the gate, the cabin fills with smoke. Now i was scared because we did not return to the terminal building, but just kept going to the customs building, and this problem reminded me about the Saudi Arabian flight 163. Everyone was coughing and had cloth over their mouth/nose. Alot said it smelled like rubber. Does anyone have any ideas as what the cause of it was? Ive never seen this happen before in the shuttles.

I have long thought these machines are death traps. I have never noticed any directions for escape procedures inside the "mobile lounges". Thankfully, nothing serious has happened.

I hate those shuttles. Always smell, too hot or too cold, always stuffed. Just disgusting.

But yes, I have never seen any emergency escape instructions in those things.

On the mobile lounges that raise and lower, there are emergency exit stairs with instructions at the rear of the lounge. On the ones that don't raise and lower there are exit stairs on both ends with instructions.

It's not hard to tell how you get out. There are doors on both ends, open them (they aren't locked) and jump down. They suck, but they aren't dangerous.
