First Take-off Of Airbus A380 Due In 8 Days; 20th

Wed Apr 13, 2005 7:59 am

I dont know about you but Im getting excited ~

will take off on the 20th of April for the first time.

8 days are left until one of the most spectacular first flights of avionic history is scheduled. The Airbus A380, the only commercial airplane with an end-to-end double deck, will take off on the 20th of April for the first time.

Only the weather or problems in previous ground test can cause a delay. If all conditions are met, former Mirage jet pilot and chief-test pilot Jacques Rosay (49) can give full throttle on the runway of the Airbus production plant in Toulouse, France, to take off at a speed of 300 km/h.

The highest risk during the flight are expected to be vibrations of the wings, which will be filled with 310000 litres of kerosene, as well as vibrations of the tail section.

The most thrilling moment will be the landing after 4 or 5 hours of flight, when the 6 Titan alighting gears (6 m high, 22 Michelin tires) will absorb the full landing weight at a speed of 265 km/h.

Well, this doesn't seem to be an extremely reliable source, and in any case I doubt the 380 will be tanked anywhere near full.

Will there be dummy loads to simulate pax/freight weight in this first flight?
Is there any chance that cable TV channels in the USA will show this first A-380 takeoff/landing live?

There will be test equipment but first flights are normally well below full load. Some sources I have read also say the engines will be derated during the first part of the test programme.

Can't wait till 2006 when SQ start operating it here in Asia, hope to catch a glimpse of it then. The A380 is a truly enormous aircraft.

I've posted a hint to this date 3 days ago in a related topic, yet nobody seemed to have picked it up then... Anyway, I confirm the 2Oth is the target date, but it could be 1 day later (or earlier....)  idea

BTW Nav20, have you already bothered to get yourself a new nickname? Because I happen to know the time frame for the testing and thus also the planned date of first flight and as it looks now, not only will that flight soon make an end to your so beloved teasing, but also would it possibly be unbearable for you to have a reference to the date in your name.

Interesting news indeed.. and, guess when I'm having my week off  Wink I had some plans of going to Zurich, but I just might as well take the shot and head for Toulouse. Anybody has info on spotting places over there? I was there once but we never went to spotting places, only to the airport itself, the Airbus plant and the 'Ailes Anciennes de Toulouse' (great organisation by the way!)

Anyone else notice the site go down for a while?!?

Anyway, as I was (trying) to post before:

Anyone know how accurate that date of the 20th of April (next Tuesday!) will be?

I don't want to start booking flights to TLS only to find they have changed the date. That would be a very costly and annoying mistake to make!

I find it worrying that Airbus have not posted an official date on their website with the 20th less than a week away!

Well, as my name implies, I'm not really an Airbus fan and am totally dismayed how the A320 can outsell the B737 the way it does. However, I am quite fascinated with the A380 for its sheer mass and I do hope the flight is a rousing success.

News from Airbus.com:

CREWING UP FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT
As worldwide anticipation of the first flight of the A380 intensifies, the final preparations for this historic event are underway at Airbus’ flight division in Toulouse, France.

The A380 will perform its maiden flight at Toulouse-Blagnac international airport in Toulouse with a six-member test flight crew on-board. The multi-national crew has undergone its own thorough pre-flight preparations to be ready for this momentous occasion, including a “virtual first flight campaign” using a simulator with actual A380 on-board computers and real cockpit systems.

Sharing command of Airbus’ flagship will be Captain Claude Lelaie, Senior Vice President, Flight Division and Chief Test Pilot Captain Jacques Rosay. Both captains are highly-experienced pilots who have completed a combined total of more than 13,000 hours of flight tests and performed the maiden flights of numerous Airbus aircraft including the A318, A340-500 and A340-600.

During the A380’s first flight, the pilots will undertake numerous manoeuvres to test the aircraft as a whole. Fernando Alonso, Vice President of Airbus’ Flight Test Division, will be the flight test engineer responsible for monitoring the flight controls and overall aircraft structure during the mission.

He will be joined by fellow flight test engineers Jacky Joye and Manfred Birnfeld whose respective tasks are to monitor the engines and the fuel systems, and systems behaviour. Also on-board will be test flight engineer Gérard Desbois who will remain on the flight deck of the first A380 during its entire test programme as he needs to know be aware of any modifications made to the aircraft during the programme.

Sorry, no date was mentioned.

Good, now we have a first flight date for the A380.

Does anyone know if Airbus is planning a webcast of the first flight? It would be great to be able to see it as it happens. Exciting times, folks. It's going to be a sight to remember, man I wish I could be there!

I think the 20th is a reasonable deadline, theyve already tested the engines during taxi-tests, and most likely all the systems and controls.
They were aiming for a mid-April deadline so I see no reason to postpone this even longer unless Airbus had any concerns about anything.
As always with test flights they have not much to compare it to, so any minor incorrections or faults wont be noticed until there in mid-air (which is why its called a Test Flight to Test all the systems are working as they should.)
I'd have loved to go down to Toulouse and spent the day there on the 20th, unfortunately the cheapest flight from MAN is almost £290 and I dont have that money yet, so I can only hope a British news service will be covering it, although SkyNews are usually the best to watch in Aviation terms, covering the final Concorde flight for a solid 8 hours.

What's with the birthdays guys?

Anyway, internally, they have always said that they must tell EVERYONE (including press of which 800 people are expected, VIP, sub-contractors, etc, etc) ONE WEEK prior to first flight.

I bet you it would be a bad day to take your car and go around Blagnac the day it happens. I am pretty sure they must warn the authorities also (police, etc..)

80% of the Airbus Toulouse plant staff is to be alongside the runway, so count at least 12000 people, plus the usual or one-off spotters.

Lot of people on sight!!!!

So far; 22nd is the word-to-mouth within the company, so expect an announcement tomorrow, or Friday, possibly Monday at the latest.
No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

And yet another reason I miss living in Europe. Maybe if we all hit up Dish Network and Direct TV at the same time they could get us Sky News or something (preferably not BBC News, just me) for a live broadcast. Or as a last resort CNN or Fox News will probably have a blurb about it in the little line that scrolls across the bottom of the screen.

Can't wait to see her fly.

When I was on test flights out of Finkenwerder, we always flew within a triangle over the meeting of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in a block between FL200 and FL300. I haven't much idea where they do test flights out of TLS (maybe near the French Atlantic coast), but I'm sure they won't be landing (or doing any touch-and-goes) anywhere else on the first test flight. It will be TLS-TLS.

I've done some test flights on Airbus as well as on Boeing, and I wish Capt. Rossay and Capt. Lelaie a "break a leg"! Test flight are never to be underestimated. I've had control issues during a manual reversion test (luckily, we were over the North Sea in an area "reserved" for us), an aircraft that suddenly depressurized and various other little things.
Can be quite a sweat, but be sure that these guys know. By the way, Airbus has a record of almost flawless first flights.
Shiek!

RE: First Take-off Of Airbus A380 Due In 8 Days; 20th

The least interesting thing will most likely be Jacques Rosay's speech at the press conference after the first flight. His speech was probably written more than a year ago.

He will tell us that the plane behaved exactly as planned, that it is the most pleasant plane he has ever flown, and that some parameters even exceeded the expected values slightly. And that he and his staff is looking forward to the most rigirous test program ever performed during the history of flight. And that he is now more convinced than ever that his baby will enter scheduled service according to plan and already next year make a lot of profit to... (and here he will mention the full names of all the airlines which have ordered the plane so far).

Why don't Airbus tell people when this event will be taking place? (I.e. announce it on their website) I'm sure a lot of people would like to see it, even those who are not mad about aviation. I'd like to go and see it, but I don't want to go booking a flight only to find that it was a false rumour or anything along those lines.  Sad
