US Airways

I believe it will be US Airways, because

1) the plane fits the route system so well, it is almost like the plane was designed for them specifically.

2) the plane is available now, and only takes 10 days to change a DC9/MD80 pilot to a 717 pilot. Maybe less.

3) the 318 which is also being considered is too heavy to do the short routes that US would want to do with a 100-pax plane.

4) Boeing, desperate for 717 buyers will buy all of US' DC9s and F100, and perhaps 732s in trade for the 717.

Now before you go and say that US has committed to being all Airbus, think again. That simply isn't true. For now at least, Boeing has the midsize jets in the fleet with the 757/762 that US is not removing. US has signed no exclusivity agreement of any kind.

Aerolineas Baleares

I believe it will be Aerolineas Baleares, because

1) Some days ago I received the April edition of World Airline Fleets News.

2) On that magazine there is a article about this new subsidiary of Spanair.

3) On the article they say it will start up domestic service in June this year with two 712's.

4) Boeing, desperate for 717 buyers will make a good deal with Aerolineas Baleares.

Now before you go and say this is just magazine blah blah, think again. Spanair will provide jet service in markets were Air Nostrum and Air Europa Express currently operate turboprops.

AB Bluestar will fly the 717 this Summer as Regional Spanair Initially they will have 3 aircraft, expanding later to 6 and eventually 15. However, the aircraft will almost definately be leased, so this will not result in any new 717 orders - just the placement of leasing company aircraft.

I know that US Airways will order it to replace it's DC-9s and Fokker F100s. Then I think maybe Delta will look into it to replace the Express 737-200s. Another possibility is Northwest replacing it's aging DC-9s for some new 717s.

I think a lot more airlines will order the 717 if BA launches a -300 version with 130 seats. They can market it as a short-haul 130 seater. I read in AW that Airtran's 717 are achieving dispatch reliabilty of 98% and fuel burn 27 % less than a Dc9-30, while BA had only promised 22 % reduction. There seems to be a bigger market for 130 seaters than 100 seaters.

According to an article that ran recently in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Boeing is in the process of finalizing a deal with an unnamed European airline (typically Boeing allows the airline to announce an order before Boeing will reveal that airline had placed the order).

The same article also reported that two Asian airlines were planning to add the 717 to their fleets.

The next airline to have their colors appear on a 717 will likely be Impulse Airlines of Australia, which has signed a lease agreement with Bavaria Leasing for three 717s.
