A380 Maidenflight: Unrevealed By Fear Of Terrorism?

Thu Apr 14, 2005 2:22 am

No one knows exactly when the A 380 maiden flight will take place. I am wondering if it will not take place by surprise.

Many rumors said they fera any terrorist attacks... I honestly don't think its the case cause Airbus cannot exactly tell if there will be any unpredicted events with the A380's functioning.

Do you think terrorism fear can contribute to hide the ever "when is it going to happen?" maiden flight ?

I don't think terrorists will be interested in the maiden flight, and I don't think that's the reason why we don't know the date.

They are simply following the checklist. Since test runs have begun Airbus is obviously satisfied with the plane at its current state and the static test results. When they are satisfied with the test run results and weather is fine, they fly.

Agreed, A350...and of course, there is the tiny issue of them watching the weather anxiously, waiting for PERFECT conditions. Let's hope they don't get nonstop rain in the TLS area for days on end!!!!

The maiden flight (and many later test flights) will be scheduled according to the weather.

Not because it cannot fly safely in bad weather. But they will need nice weather and very low level of turbulence in order to make the test flights as productive as possible.

The first flights will be done at rather low level and at low speed. One of the most important things to look out for will be unusual vibrations in wings, tail, flaps and control surfaces. They will simply get the best data in calm and stable air.

Also absolutely clear air will be needed for photographic recordings from a chase plane.

Fear of terrorism can be ruled out. When it does take off the whole area will be invaded by roughly a million Frenchmen and practically all of them will carry a cell phone. Five thousand policemen will be out controlling the traffic, or trying to control the traffic, most likely to no avail. I wouldn't dare to wear even a kid's slingshot in southern France on the day of the first A380 flight.

And if I did carry a slingshot, then I wouldn't be surprised if I was lynched by a hundred Frenchmen.

Nah, the terrorists will wait until it is full of innocent people, then they will try something stupid. You can bet there will be undercover armed security (Sky Marshalls) on this thing when she starts commerical service.

Quoting A350 (Reply 1):

I don't think you know what terrorists are actually interested in. The purpose of terror is to coerce fear into your enemy, I am certain taking down the symbol of European pride can do just that. That does not mean it will happen, but it is only prudent to consider it and take precautions.

Quoting DAYflyer (Reply 4):

Terrorists do not think anyone is innocent, which can enable all sorts of tactics. Killing 'innocent' creates more fear, that is the point.

I certainly hope none of you are audacious enough to think terrorism is now overrated? Those that protect us are doing a very good job, I'll bet Airbus has consulted with the authoiries regarding scheduling. It isn't far fetched.

I would suggest that some vagueness as to day, time of day is not only as to the a/c being ready for the 1st flight, set up for the media and weather, but to allow for proper security checks of the Toulose region and to throw off any possible terror plans.
Let us not forget that France has a considerable Islamic community (maybe 10% of the whole population?) and thus a significant chance of Islamic based terrorists within that community.

Just out of curiosity, is there a credible source for these rumors?
