AZ To Upgrade MXP-IAD Route To MD11!

Thu Apr 14, 2005 3:36 am

Horray!! AZ will upgauge from 767 to MD11 on MXP/IAD/MXP route starting 01MAY! This will be our only MD11 service by a reg. sched. airline at IAD!! Effective 22SEP it goes back to the 767, so obviously, it's just for high season.

OVERSIGHT: meant to say MD-11 COMBI, and that (as far as I know) this will be only MD-11 service since U.S. AFRICA AIRWAYS went out of business back in early 90s.

No plural. There is only one, and, IIRC, it is currently not operating any scheduled flights.

Combi's not allowed to U.S.?? Why? This is a news flash to me.

The schedule in Amadeus shows M1M, so unless AZ loaded an incorrect type code, yes, it will be a Combi.

Maybe Gigneil can explain the details further, but I recall reading on these boards that it had to do with US not allowing aircraft on which pax and cargo are on the same deck in case fire breaks out in the cargo hold

Existing Combis are allowed to fly to the US, the FAA simply will not certify any new models.

Yeah no NEW Combis are allowed... with a moveable wall that is... they have to have some sort of re-inforced wall which adds a lot to weight, so many airlines are just opting for seperate cargo and pass aircraft... mostly screwed by this are KLM 744Fs and Alaska 732Cs... Alaska however is converting some of their 734s to Combis WITH the reinforced wall, for intra-alaska routes replacing the 732s... while KLM i believe has no real plan yet, neither do they have to have one for awhile i believe

if anyone can inform me about KLM that would help

I remember flying IAD-ZRH on Swissair on a 330, but I found this photo in the database.
Perhaps this was an equipment substitution , not regular service ?

Sorry buddy, you're wrong. There are currently at least 3 combi's operating, and on scheduled flights...currently from MXP-DEL and MXP-BOM!

I-DUPI
I-DUPO
I-DUPE

are all currently operating!

Better luck next-time.

What is the pax capacity compared to the B767? With the freight hold in the back, is there a noticeable increase in available seats on the MD-11?

I think it's not an upgrade in terms of pax capacity

M1M Alitalia : 204 seats (30 C + 174 Y)
767 "standard" Alitalia : 214 seats (25 C + 189 Y)
(at the moment there are also 2 767 ex-GJ in 258 seats configuration)

Bye

I would be interesting to know if these new regulations will have any impact on the sales of the 747ADV. I sure hope this plane gets off the ground, and I doubt that offering a combi version would hurt.

Thanks to TWA902fly, I didn't know that!!

To WestWing, AS FAR AS I CAN RECALL [emphasis, not screaming], that would have been an equip. substitution.

To anyone, what is "IIRC" ??

To LXsaab2000, quite right, because it's a Combi, it's actually LESS pax capacity, in Steerage, just a bigger airplane. But 5 more seats in Magnifica Class. Curious, eh?

Hey, while I'm here, can anyone tell me what the broad black "stripes" are that I see on some airliner wings, that run from the leading edge back, but not all the way to the trailing edge? I noticed it first with TWA's last livery, and have seen them on some other airlines now, too, although I can't recall this early in the morning who. What are they for? A "do not walk past this line" thing?

The swiss MD-11 was not the regular equipment on the Swiss flight to IAD. We would usually find out about it from Swiss's web sight (it used to show reg #'s) or the flight trackers.

They help the crew to see ice buildup on the wing.
