Ain't that a trip.  Wink

Wonder if SAN has the room...?  Yeah sure (it was sarcasm btw, they would start the routes if there wasn't any, duh)

But it can go along the same lines as the other thread re: SAN having one runway.

I wonder how well JetBlue will do now? Anyone have any thoughts on both FlyI and JetBlue starting new service in this market.

I heard that United's IAD-SAN nonstop yield was one of the best in their systems...

Wow! Won't this be the first B6 Indy competition starting may 3rd? The jetblue web page showing that SAN-IAD opening date:
http://www.jetblue.com/travelinfo/routemap.html

And won't San Jose also be a B6 Indy fight?

I picked a flight out in July (returning two weeks later) and Indy is $198 vs. B6 at $238 for a round trip flight. Ouch, tough margins.

Can someone remind me of Indy's two digit symbol?

What's Indy's A319 CASM?

Thanks,

I'm not so sure this service is going to last all that long. There's quite an increase in flights to IAD from SAN this summer. I think UAL is going up to three daily, plus one from JetBlue, and this one from Independence Air. I think Independence Air is most likely to blink. I still don't have much faith in their business plan or chances for long-term survival.

Still, I hope someone manages to get some photos of Independence at SAN while it lasts and that they'll post them here. Anybody know which gate they're planning to use?

Interesting to note, UAL is actually going up to four daily soon on SAN-IAD. They will be adding an early morning flight out of SAN.

Independence Air won't last long in this market. With UA turning up the heat and B6 coming in, they're toast.

Currently scheduled out of gate 38 (T2). Looking forward to SAN-IAD on Friday! Don't know what the loads are like, although it was pretty wide open as a few weeks ago. They're promoting the new transcon routes with some pretty spectacular fares.

Lightsaber,

we'll only fly from SJC only to BOS and JFK (for now). the closest to competition we'll have w/ DH is IAD-OAK. same goes for IAD-LAX/LGB.

it really will be interesting to see how these flights go. 6x daily between UA (4), DH (1), and us (1).

also, i know DH was planning on adding IFE to their airbii but plans haulted due to financial problems. do they AT LEAST have music at all to listen too? how boring would it be to fly a transcon w/o anything entertaining. if it were my choice (that is, if i were a regular paying passenger) i'd go for UA or B6 cause at least there'll be something of interest to watch.

if IAD-SAN is one of their best routes for yield...it'll soon be going into the red w/ 2 LCC's flying that route now. things will be interesting when operations get going.

There is plenty of room for everybody (except maybe UA)

B6 gets most of the local traffic. They are fine.

DH gets less local traffic. But DH has soemthind B6 doesn't: FEED.

I dont think DH could run B6 out of IAD like FL ran B6 out of ATL with feeded load factors. But the presence of DH prevents B6 from turning IAD into a JFK.

DH is still in the "testing" phase of their business plan. They have not hit one single target since they started flying. UA will crush DH, just with frequent flyer incentives alone. Hmmm.....earn double points on DH and earn a free round trip to Detroit or earn bonus miles on UA and go to Australia, Hawaii, Germany, South America, around the world. Tough choice.

Don't be so cocky. I have a problem with you DH folks that think you own IAD just because you have the "biggest low-fare hub" there. There are is a whole lot of government business that United gets SAN-IAD, both for O+D pax and people going on to Europe, which DH cannot match no matter how low the money-losing fare.

I don't think it's the largest low fare hub anymore. UA has done their job of beating DH into submission.

Which is funny because B6's schedule in the early morning is SAN-IAD 0630-1430

Just like B6FA4ever said, B6 does SJC-BOS and and DH does SJC-IAD. It's only a 'fight' if you consider cnx on DH: SJC-IAD-BOS.

I think that we might be underestimating Indy. Granted when they first started, it was bumpy, but I think as they mature they're doing better and better.

I think AirTran in ATL is now a larger hub than DH in IAD. DH should of had around 330 flights a day by now according to the original plan. But due to the cutbacks, they are just about 250, if that. UA is adding more TED flight out of IAD. And the frequent flier incentatives that UA is offering can not be matched by DH. Then, with B6 adding a flight here and a flight there, that is adding more pressure to DH. But I could be wrong on all of this.

I think it is funny everyone tries to be so cocky about their own airline and really think they know what airline has done what to who.

DH does have IFE now aboard transcon flights with the dIGEplayer. If last month's 70.7% load factor is any sign, yes things are getting better. The CEO did say they are working to increase yield, nothing new. They have managed to get people in 70.7% of their seats and give DH a try in March. Now they can work on getting a few extra bucks out of them next time they fly on the established routes.

Above all, every airline is part of a family. Flight benefits are shared airline to airline and their is friendly competition at the workplace. But JDaniel..."beating into submission" c'mon...think before you type...DH is getting better not worse.

My comment only reflects that the cards have not fallen DH's way. The original business plan made a lot of sense. It should have worked great. However, the CFO (Richard Surratt) made a comment on a conferance call several months ago that DH has not met any goals and that the primary reason was that they had "unforeseen competition". I guess he was referring to LAN with NW. Also, the business model was concieved with oil being at $37/barrell. Also, there was a "strong" feeling that US would liquidate in January. Finally, the increased competition from UA was not imagined i.e. frequent flier bonuses, added TED flying, etc. So bottom line, the business plan has been falling apart from day one. And the 70+% load factor is an excellent improvement from the 40+% load factor from a few months ago, I doubt that the yield has increased at the same rate due to the fact that the seats are always on sale.

TED may be viable competition, but I've never seen TED as a competitive force, simply because UA, in creating TED, was busy building an addition to its house before fixing the current structure. As long as DH can keep riding along, UA's inept management will not create a huge roadblock for DH. Though it's good for the consumer, those frequent flier bonuses are really a crock. Talk about DH having huge sales - UA is sticking it under the noses of the BK courts that they're basically giving away seats themselves. And they don't have to worry about the losses with the umbrella provided by these dimwitted magistrates.

Of course, we can all go on about the long road DH has, but DH has done remarkably well (such as staying out of BK) in light of these unforseen circumstances.
