BAe & Boeing/747-400X Update

Mon Apr 10, 2000 12:45 am

BAe Systems and Boeing Co. are holding talks that could lead to a merger of the companies valued at $46.8 billion, according to a report in the U.K.'s Sunday Telegraph.

Boeing is believed to be preferred as a possible suitor for BAe, formerly known as British Aerospace, ahead of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

The talks on a possible consolidation were said to have been intense earlier this year before cooling slightly ahead of election campaigns. The discussions, however, are expected to resume as soon as possible, the Telegraph reported.

Analysts noted, however, that one problem facing the two companies would be over competition concerns. Boeing's main rival in the civil aircraft market is the European consortium Airbus Industrie, in which BAe Systems holds a 20 percent stake.

Still, it's significant that Boeing, BAe, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon recently joined forces with plans to develop an Internet exchange dedicated to the defense and aerospace industry worldwide. The deal was seen as evidence that BAe sees its future in terms of alliances with U.S.-based firms.

747-400X Update

It seems that Mitsubishi Heavy and Boeing are near the final stages of completition on the 747-400X blueprints. The two were expected to design variations on Boeing's 747-400 super jumbo jet. The major advancement it seems at this time is the speed of the new model. Mitsubishi is confirming that with the new wing and engines that the cruise speed of the new aircraft will be around Mach .90. Another strange twist is that Virgin and Singapore Airlines are near a deal to confirm orders for the A-3XX.
