Career Change! Suggestions For LGW Area?

Fri Apr 15, 2005 5:08 am

I'm considering a major career change, the airline business being one of them. I don't have the eyesight to be a pilot nor the looks to be an FA. I'd like to earn in the £30k region and am in my late 20s. Are there any types of aviation jobs that pay that sort of wage? In the LGW area particularly? Computer programming is currently my profession.

Cheers

How about being a dispatcher. There are a few members of airliners.net that are dispatchers and they seem very eager to give encouragement and advice about this job field.

Quoting Geoffm (Thread starter):

$56,000 sounds like one heck of a salary to enter a non-specialized position with an airline. Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most airline jobs (outside of pilots, mechanics, and management) start out considerably lower than that? Maybe LGW has such a steep cost-of-living that you can command that kind of salary for being a check-in clerk, sales agent, customer service rep., or ramp rat, but it sure looks high on the surface.

Hi There,

Satx / Geoffm

Salarys:

Customer Service Staff (check-in/ticket desk/rep etc)
GBP13000 - 16000

Dispatcher
GBP17000+

Duty Manager
GBP21000+

Its only once you have been here a while or you are in a specialised field would the salay be good.

Try to stay with your computer work if poss but in the airport/airline environment.

Cheers

Yeah, I suspected that salaries might be lower if you're not onboard an aircraft, which is why I mentioned the salary. Thanks for all the tips - I'll start looking! Flight sim programming maybe, although I wonder whether the market is saturated for that sort of thing.
