so it is acknowledged that they've overtaken IC.
I was expecting more news on international fleet acquisition than domestic. All good as long as it comes..

I assume the newer 737-800's will come with winglets.

I wonder if Jet Airways will order more 737-900's in the future or even look into the 737-900X

As it expands, Jet Airways will spend US$400 million over the next 24-30 months on 17 Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) B737-800 or B737-900 planes, a spokesman quoted Luethi as saying later. It will purchase 10 of the planes and lease seven. It currently has 42 planes.

I was wondering how full Jet Airways 737 flights usually are. Do they really need so many 737s in their fleets? I think they need to start adding some regional jets to their fleets instead of more 737s. I know they do have some ATRs that serve the regional routes but RJs are always better and faster.
Should they have atleast looked at the 717? Airlines like AirTran here in the US have really profited with that aircraft in their fleet and even though the 717 production line is almost coming to an end, a lot of airlines are still looking into ordering that aircraft. NW still flies a whole bunch of DC9s manufactured back in the 60s and 70s so 717 is a good dependable aircraft to have in your fleet.

Is 9W still looking for aircraft for its international routes? Hint: there are several AA767 at Roswell, NM awaiting their fate Smile

Apparently their inaugral BOM-SIN flight had only something like 60 passengers?
Not a good beginning, it seems.

Hey cone on! I thought 60 is good (provided there were not too many free loaders) to start with!!!!

Also this is a route which already has SQ double daily not to speak of Air India

9W is talking about adding about 15 widebodies to the fleet. Any gues as to what they will order. My guess is that despite having the 340-300, they will probably opt for the 772LR (great range, payload, etc.) over the A340-500.

This is correct. The flight consisted mainly of mediamen adn Jet top nothces.. infact the secong flight today went with only 35% occupancy...

Sure is not an exciting start, but things might change with the widebodies coming in.

9W needs to get widebodies on their international flights eastbound as well. They can’t shuttle 738s back and forth for too long, not on such a long flight and more importantly not when SQ runs a 777! They need to get bigger planes = more ppl = more business/first class PAX. I agree, they have the domestic pax loyalty advantage but without an a330 or 777 on these routes they have a hugeeeeeeee disadvantage. Loads might be low for now, but they will pick up eventually, if not get a bigger plane  Smile (Sounds weird I know......)

I don’t see what’s so wrong in mixing fleet types. 9W doesn’t have the money now to buy a bunch of 772LR.... but when they do great! It would be nice to see a345s in the fleet as well  Smile

i doubt 9W has kinda deep pockets to buy B772LR. Moreover it does not make sense for an international startup to spend so much money, esp when their first westbound flight is not non-stop.

No one has that kind of cash. Everyone borrows based on their financial track record, etc. And if Jet wants to I am sure the can put together a group of lenders who will finance such a purchase. Where do you think JetBlue got all that money to buy new Airbus frames or Kingfisher in India? The entire world runs on borrowed money! And if you don't want to borrow... do a secondary stock offering and raise the cash. But it can be done especially since Jet has been steadily growing since its inception. It's one of the best airlines I have flown in.
The fun of flying... love it !!!

IIRC, they have been the largest domestic Indian airline for the past two years in terms of passengers carried.

This order/lease will probably consist of a mix of -800's and -900's. If the -900X is launched, and there are good signs it will this summer, then Jet might be very interested for their regional routes.

Quoting HAWK21M (Reply 5):

The acquisition of 3 A340-300E's has been confirmed by several sources, not the least of which is SAA themselves. The lease period is only for 2 years, however, so Jet will probably be ordering their own aircraft later this year. FWIW, the last I heard is was a toss-up for who it will go to, though Boeing seems a slight favorite.

I'm sure they could, but they will then run the risk of falling into the same trap that they did with their IFC bond issue from the late 1990s. They invested heavily into infrastructure on the assumption that revenue streams would continue to grow at the strong rates they were at the time. When the domestic market plateaued from 2000-2003, they struggled to make debt service and came very close to defaulting. It took a COO like Luethi to focus on cost-control before they were able to come out of that crisis. Naresh Goyal has now shifted his focus away from debt financing (although he is very willing to do collateralized structured debt) and has made it pretty clear that future acquisitions will be funded from a mix of cashflow and equity (like his recent IPO).

According to this article the latest developments of 9W are :

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1079599.cms

In the next three months, the airline will open one new international station every month.

MAA-KUL flights start from May 5th.

BOM-LHR flights start from May.

BOM-EWR flights 6 times a week by the end of June. 9W are still undecided whether the EU stop will be BRU or CDG or AMS!!! Im glad they switched from JFK to EWR which is also AIs most profitable North American route.

On the agenda is a code-share agreement with Aussie carrier Qantas from SIN and on Indian domestic routes.

9W will add between nine to fifteen wide-bodied aircraft to its fleet in the next two years.

From : Seattle Times

Jet Airways, India's biggest domestic airline, will acquire 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, estimated at up to $695 million.

It also will lease seven 737-800s and take delivery of three Airbus 340-300 planes in May and June, Chief Operating Officer Peter Luethi said in Singapore, the airline's first Southeast Asian destination.

Travandrum-Male is really interesting. Male is going to grow into a huge tourist destination in a few years and ill be surprised if it isn’t connected to the top 5-6 Indian cites by then. I mean look at Thailand and Sri Lanka, Males potential is great.
9W wont need a widebody on that route  Smile, but they will on others.

Male was already a vvv big tourist destination and its just sad that Tsunami has ruined that and will now take 2 years to recover from that disaster.

No idea why they do that! Why compete with IC on the only route (with only point-to-point capacity) India-MAledives (apart fom HM BOM-MLE-Seychelles... does this route still exist?). Why don't they go from MAA, COK, BOM, DEL or so and use a new market?

MLE can be easily filled with a 4 weekly A 320/B 737NG service from BOM/DEL/MAA and 3 weekly from BLR/HYD if the right marketing tools went into promoting the route.

It is a very popular honeymoon and short holiday option for Indians and since Indians can afford such trips to Mauritius and Seychelles which are longer flights + more costly destinations, MLE in coordination with the Airlines of India should work together for MLEs benefit.

Plus now with the post Tsunami recovery going on in MLE, prices of hotels etc should be lower than normal further attracting tourists from India.

I think currently a vast majority of the India-MLE-India traffic flies via CMB on Sri Lankan Airlines? Am I right?
