Just Hobbyists

I was out at CCR taking pictures with a friend (Matthew Hom) over at the east hangers. The airport fire truck came thundering up towards us. It stopped and a quite intimidating man came out. He asked us who we were, why we were out there, how old we were, and what two "kids" were doing at an airport.

For one we were both on the outside, side of the fence. Two, the driver had seen me doing my preflight many times in the past as he drove by the FBO I fly out of. I had even talked to the guy before, but once we had a camera in our hands we became a "thret" to aviation. It seems that people are afraid of aircraft photographers.

I know how important security is at airports. It keeps people alive and safe but I am tiered of being hassled by airport personel when I just want to get a good shot of an aircraft.

I half-expected something like that today myself. The old south terminal at HLN is either going to be demolished or given away and moved. I have very vague memories of that terminal as a small child before they built the new one. Anyway, I'd read about its plight in the newspaper and decided to take some photos of it before it is gone. I noticed an ambulance there, but didn't think much of it. I'm an EMT myself, so ambulances don't fascinate me that much anymore. Then, I noticed a Mercy Flight helicopter there ready to take off for Benefis in Great Falls. The ground ambulance had obviously delivered a patient to them. They took off while I was there, so I got some really good shots of the chopper. I got some odd looks and half-expected the airport police to come out or something, but they didn't. Of course, I wasn't there long either.
