My guess would be to China. To import more "Made In China" goods.  Smile

UPS is looking at SDF to China, Japan etc. Mostly asian routes to and from SDF.

I would suspect mainly destinations in Asia where slots are not readily available. Thus they can carry as much cargo as possible per slot.

I read somewhere that initial Fedex routes would be MEM-NRT/CDG. Generally, any intl Fedex route that requires 2 daily M11's now is a candidate for the A380.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I read the same thing... any routes requiring 2 or more M11s would be the first candidate for an A380.

I would also expect them to capitalize on their slots to China with A380 service.

And what is about the cargo from Asia to the west of the US? Do they carry, e.g. the parcels from Shanghai to San Francisco, via Kentucky  confused

Indeed Fedex announced the A380 would be intialy used as an inter-hub airplane connecting the US with Europe and Asia.

UPS has its West Coast sorting hub at Ontario with about 40 flights during weekdays. Asia cargo is connected via MD-11 / B747 service from Anchorage.

I would see HKG as a great possiblity if they are the hub of int'l cargo movement in Asia (I think I read that somewhere).

China will be the first focus for both. Due to political issues, it is difficult to get more frequencies. As a result, if you want to carry more frt, you need bigger planes. But there is still 3 years before first delivery to FX. Plenty of time to fine tune the strategy.
OO-VEG you are right about a booming market around CGN. That's why FX has started an MD11 service in March. But for the A380, it will be CDG and maybe FRA, before CGN.

I would say Asia-ANC will be first for FedEx, at ANC, they can forward it on to their various hubs in the lower 48 (MEM, IND, OAK and eventually AFW and GSO)

Didn't I read somewhere that Fred Smith told a French audience at the 380 Reveal they would use them RTW: MEM to/from CDG to/from Asia (Guangzhou/Clark?) to/from US?

SDF is currently lengthening the RW next to UPS's 747/380 hardstand locations from 10k to 12k, specifically for their ultra longhauls (read: Asia).
