Why No WN PVD-LAS Service?

Sat Apr 16, 2005 8:23 am

Considering the presence WN has at PVD, how come no non-stop service to Vegas? WN has n/s's from MHT and BUF, and no other airline offers n/s from PVD.

What's the runway length at PVD? At 9250 feet, MHT 17/35 can handle a fully fueled
non stop to LAS.

rwy 5/23 is 7166 ft long, wn flies PVD-PHX which is 1973 miles, while PVD-LAS is 2040 or so, would 70 miles make that much of a difference?

I thought they did? I recall seeing signs for WN outside LAS advertising nonstops to Boston (and then in 0,5 cm lettering service to Manchester and Providence), but maybe I'm just hallucinating the Providence part.  crazy

Seems like plenty of New Eng area airports offer service to LAS. Maybe it's just a numbers game and PVD is the odd airport out? BUF is the only airport in Western NY that offers WN nonstop flights. They also draw many people from southern Ontario Canada.

It is interesting that we (MHT) have the LAS service but not PHX, while PVD has just the opposite! As for whether the extra 70 miles 'makes a difference,' I guess in those terms it does not. But they have to build in a buffer for alternate landing airports, so the 70 miles becomes something more than that. I hope that PVD gets LAS in the same way that we get PHX. Both MHT and PVD have proven themselves in abundance. The eventual number of Southwest nonstops out of MHT is somewhere around 45 and they'll probably need four gates that turn nine times a day to do that. The next terminal expansion up here will provide the fourth gate (they have three now).

WHY? I believe the answer is in a nutshell, LOW yield.

There was a Saturday only LAS from PVD during the fall of 2004. Naturally one would have to stay a full week to take advantage of it in both directions.

I dont think LAS is too far off. The new 3rd Q O&D #'s show PVD has more pax to LAS than MHT, and MHT has the n/s service...I dont have the exact #'s but i believe it was something like 250 PVD and 180 MHT. The main thing is WN seems to be capitalizing on the opportunities at hand in MDW and PHL, so other expansion has been limited.

Their confidence in PVD's runway is improving with the winglets as several years ago they used to weight restrict the 5pm PHX flight, this year that flight will now opperate at 2pm during the summer months. I'd say we'll see it within the next 18 mos.

I don't buy the yields excuse at all. How many markets from LAS are high yield not many, and I'd bet BDL and MHT yields aren't too differant than what PVD's is/would be...PVD-LAS will happen within the next 12 months. If not WN than one of a couple other airlines.

I would dare say the majority of the markets to/from LAS are low yield. WN and HP serve dozens of cities nonstop from the city due to customer demand. Even though LAS may not make $$$ for the airlines, it's a place that people want to go to. A daily PVD-LAS flight on WN would work no questions asked.

Long enough that a 733 would likely not have an issue most days

WN really does not care much about yields. Their fare structure is rather yield proof

That's probably a true statement for a -700 more so than a -300.

With runway 5-23 at PVD only 7,166 feet, and given the headwinds westbound and the loads "most" of the time, the -300 is more problematic.
