Air Zimbabwe Reducing Singapore... Adding Bangkok+

Sat Apr 16, 2005 11:08 am

Air Zimbabwe, not making money on Harare-Singapore-Beijing is now dropping SIN once per week in favour of Bangkok, becoming the 5th African airline to serve BKK. Apparently less than 50% load factor DOES hurt, so they are trying out BKK. Not bad, I think, since BKK is more affordable in terms of lodging, shopping etc (pure guess, but I am sure this is the case). The airline _could_ attract those who are fed up of SAA, but I am sure SAA will also try its best to combat this new entrant. According to Amadeus however, the 2x frequency to Beijing will be maintained, with one via BKK, the other via SIN. Competing at 1x frequency will of course be tough.

Further developments incude serving Beijing via Entebbe, Uganda (hmmm) and the opening of a service to Dubai during the first week of May.

DXB schedule via Entebbe WITH 5TH FREEDOM(!), which puts them in competition with Emirates, which is the only one on this route now:
Air Zimbabwe
UM 732 Harare (HRE), Harare, Zimbabwe 22:00
Dubai (DXB), Dubai, United Arab Emirates 09:00 +1 day(s)
1 stop(s)

Air Zimbabwe

Harare (HRE), Harare, Zimbabwe 06:30 +1 day(s)
1 stop(s)
762 9h00min Monday, May 16, 2005
--- Monday
Wednesday

BKK Schedule going on to PEK
Air Zimbabwe
UM 772 Harare (HRE), Harare, Zimbabwe 21:30
Bangkok Int'l (BKK), Bangkok, Thailand 12:45 +1 day(s)

Oh, I am sure she will... it's probably set up that way so she can justify a week-long stipend, or two weeks if she misses the flight. I am sure however, that the BKK-HRE flight will still be diverted to pick her up.

As side note, Zimbabwe which continues in a deep economic crisis, agreed as part of its "Look East" policy to strengthen trade and political ties with China this week purchased 6 military jets from China.

China also agreed to supply three commercial aircraft to Air Zimbabwe. No details as far as model was announced.

Any idea's?

I figure it could either be smaller Chinese built commuter, or possibly used MD-80/90s or B737-300/500s to replace Air Zim's 737-200s on regional routes.

Air Zimbabwe should not be able to fly anywhere. Other countries should place embargoes on this nation due to it's abominable human and civil rights violations.
South African Airways was treated in this manner during the 1980s due to it's countries apartheid policy; and yet, what Zimbabwe is doing is just as bad, if not worse, and the world turns a blind eye. Always different when the shoe is on the other foot.

Well without getting into politics, there was a pretty strong demand for traffic to the UK left over from the colonial days. Air Zimbabwe served London on a regular basis with 767s and BA served Harare with B747-400s. I also remember seeing Air Zim at Frankfurt.

In addition Zimbabwe had a pretty strong regional network with multiple daily flights to South Africa in particular.

Zimbabwe also at one boasted thriving tourism industry going at Victoria Falls which brought in people from all over the world.

Its sad to actually see one of Africa's more progressive airlines (was one of the first with the 767 along with Ethiopian) to fall on such hard times as a result of the country being banished by most world nations thru sanctions.

Very sad to see that you are comparing Apartheid to measly land grabbing (the latter which abruptly reversed the effects of colonization with a huge bang and sensless thought, making it tough to swallow). While Mugabe's actions are inexcusable, there are more abominable human and civil rights violations reported out of Australian immigration detention centres, for which embargoes should be placed on Qantas. Apartheid was the most despicable treatment of people in recent times, and unless you were on the other side of it, you would not know what its real effects of degradation were.

With a long haul fleet of 2 B767, Air Zimbabwe must be fairly stretched.

Perhaps the choice was SIN or BKK but not both.

As I said, and highly expected, the shoe is very different when it's on the other foot isn't it! You statements have backed this up.

As terrible as it was (I NEVER stated otherwise), there is, and has been, just as bad in many other countries.

I agree. I argue further that the West should impose full sanctions against Zimbabwe. Ironically, the best shape that the Zimbabwe economy was ever in was under the UDI period from 1965 to 1980. Like so many Affrican nations, the economy went downhill after the Europeans started leaving, and it's the local blacks ho have suffered the most.

Regarding Air Zimbabwe, there have been many stories on here about how Mugabe treats Air Zim as his own private air fleet.

The white-run farms in Zimbabwe employed large numbers of blacks and were the primary driver of the economy. Zimbabwe was a huge food exporter in the 1980's but now must import food. Not a single former white-run farm turned over to blacks (mostly cronies of Mugabe) has ever been as productive since, and MOST have fallen into disrepair. The whites of Zimbabwe are as Zimbabwean as the blacks and are victims of a racist Hitler-like Mugabe. He should be deposed at force by the West. The Australian migrants are illegal migrants and Australia should be deporting them, but this is a different story.

Anyway, regarding the AirZim routes to SIN/BKK, I find it hard to believe there was ever any demand for these routes. Zim dos not strike me a usual vacation locale for SE Asians. I am not sure of the ownership structure of AirZim, but I imagine it is govt owned and hence has never had a profit motive.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
