Oman Air To Order The 787

Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:44 am

Middle Eastern carrier, Oman Air, are to buy at least 3 Boeing 787 Dreamliner:

http://www.zawya.com/Story.cfm?id=16...ries&page=Transport&l=052757050418

The airline currently operates 3 B738s, 3 B73Gs and 4 ATR42s.

I guess this move will allow them to finally enter the long haul market out of MCT, which will create a headache for GF.

The article also mentions new routes and increases in frequency to India and Egypt. It is launching services to Delhi and Hyderabad in June, and increasing flights to Mumbai to two a day from Muscat. It is also increasing flights to Cairo to daily from three a week.

Well, this would be great news for Oman and Boeing.
May the A380 arrive @ MCO in the near future.

Chalk up another order for the 787! I am beginning to wonder if this really is a competition, or if Airbus just does not want a share in this market!

I would expect these to be B 788s used on MCT-LHR, MCT-BKK and MCT-BOM flights mainly.

TG does very well on its MCT-BKK flights which are routed via KHI...so well that a MCT-BKK booking is given way higher priority than a KHI-BKK booking on that same flight as the yield out of MCT per Y and J class seat on the A 333s is way more higher.

find it funny that when ANA ordered 50 frames, it was considered "political" and rubbish as such...maybe ANA saw something which others didn't at first...Boeing might top the 300 mark by the end of this year...rather impressive!

Exactly how close are the ties between GF and Oman? Rather being a headache for GF could this signal an impending order from them?

My bet is 350 by years end and 600 by first flight in 2007.

A team from Oman Air has recently visited Jakarta, and the airline is said to be seriously looking into the possibility of starting flights here. Flights would be routed through some other point in Asia, likely to be Kuala Lumpur, although Singapore is also a possibility. Oman Air would follow the lead of Qatar Airways and Emirates in Jakarta, both of which are doing very well here. Gulf Air, and its miserable Gulf Traveller product has been taking a beating in Jakarta lately, and will likely do even more so if and when EK starts nonstop flights and Qatar introduces its A330 product on a daily basis.

How has the concept and appeal of GF Traveller being faring in India, Pakistan and DAC versus QR-KU and EK? Has it resulted in lower fares thus taking more pax away from these 3 airlines or have more pax switched over ever since the launch of GF Traveller?

How is Oman Air going to get slots at LHR?

I read in another thread on airliners.net that there are special conditions for new entrants (e.g. Jet Airways). Slots are waiting for them it seems.
I want the European Union flag on airliners.net!

I read about Oman Air acquiring LHR slots about a year ago if I remember correctly.

Is this a firm order or is it just the airline stating it's desire to order them down the road (which it sounds like to me)?

I believe that if new slots open up that new entrants are given priority, but that it is a moot point because slots never open up.

I think there are slots available 2100-2230, and that's about it.

Not firm. It is an airline stating it's intention to order them. Perhaps they are one of the airlines that had paid a refundable deposit. Shame they gave no indication on timing

Have to wonder how GF will survive....what with Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways becoming so large and now Oman Air seemingly operating the LHR-MCT route (can't imagine there's room for 3 direct flights a day on the route including the BA flight via AUH) it seems like GF are soon to become the national airline of Bahrain....

indeed!!!

GF got the boot from DOH in 1999-2000 by DOH Govt and Qatar Airways
GF will soon the boot from AUH by Etihad and AUH Govt

GF should concentrate on its BAH hub now as that state doesnt have a national carrier and like someone said rapid development and modernization is happening there.

Oman Air still has a vvv long way to go before it could even think of effectively competing with GF out of MCT on many routes.

Given that GF has been talking about getting shot of its 767s for several months, and since GF and Oman Air have discussed potential joint fleet purchases, perhaps it's not out of the question that GF might take them alongside Oman Air.

Standard disclaimer about not knowing for sure, but I don't think Oman Air was one of the airlines. Or, at least not originally.

Hmmm...I spoke to Oman Air today and they're denying all knowledge. They're saying that Boeing has given them a presentation but that ordering a long-haul aircraft is a long way away.

Apologies Backfire for only using part of your quote however, I too, had seen reports from Mr Hogan(?) of Gulf Air in mid 2004 that implied they were looking at a quite substantial order. I then saw further reports toward the end of the year where Mr Hogan was far less forthcoming and he seemed to be reversing the position of his earlier statements.

I get the feeling that Gulf Air have had to scale back their plans given what EK, QR & EY have all set in motion and that is why we've seen such comments from Oman Air as their requirement may have been factored into those of GF so they may now have to act on their own.

Did you speak to Mr Abdul Rahman Al Busaidy, his quote, if reported correctly seems rather clear to me, they will order the airplane and he implied the order is still some time away. I'll remain an optimist! Though I thank you for following through and calling them for more info!

That is what I thought too. At the least I'd concur that they were not one of the original airlines which placed a refundable deposit.

The article states:

"We are looking at ordering Boeing 787s as part of our future expansion, to start with at least three 787s," Abdul Rahman Al Busaidy, Oman Air's chief executive officer, told Gulf News recently. He, however, could not give a time frame.

The key word is "looking" and the fact there is no time frame. I wouldn't chalk this up on the order board yet. It is basically a non-story. It might be a trial balloon but more likely they are just expressing interest at this point. It doesn't surprise me that if you called them they would have no comment. The source is the director of the airline and he's the only one that can comment on these things.
