Flight Trackers

Tue Apr 19, 2005 10:40 am

My apologies in advance as this is a way over used thread. I'm pretty new to this forum and that's the reason I'm asking. What are the best flight tracker mediums that you use to track flights. They have to be free being as I'm a cheap a$$ed pilot and would just like to find something that works well. My thanks in advance.

AirNav Live Flight Tracker is the cheapest and easiest to use.
Download a free trial from www.airnavsystems.com

They are a new company and getting lots of market share in the last few months.

Well, I can recommend:

http://icarus.red1aviation.com

Sorry, not free, but only $14.95/month ..... and I don't care what the other say  Wink, the free trackers simply don't compare to those that cost less than 50 cents a day. Lots of search capabilities. It doesn't have great maps but is excellent on pure readable data..which is what I like.

Heck....the others will say fboweb.com also.....oh, and airnavsystems.com

Everybody has their favorites for various reasons,

Our company uses Flight Explorer. It's a great program, but not free. However, you can track single flights on their website for free.

http://www.flightview.com/ is pretty decent too.

Like with almost evrything if you get it free the quality is usually worse...again try www.airnavsystems.com ,they give 60 hours per month which is 6x what the competion offers...it is being used by most airlines and airports in the US and the best, it is not web based so it has much more capabilities.

red1aviation.com and fboweb.com are both only $14.95/mo for unlimited usage. All depends on what you want.

Flight Explorer is no doubt the business leader, but also probably the most money.

You pay for what you get....so make sure you only pay for what you want  Smile

Well, this isn't the thread to argue this, but to quickly reply, yes, flight tracking and related subjects are my life, and have been for many years. Flight Explorer has been in the market for many, many years before Airnav, and was/is directed at primarily business users. Flight Explorer is great, I'm sure Airnav is great....geared more toward enthusiasts than FE is, fboweb.com and red1aviation.com are direct competitors with each other and are web-based and probably the cheapest for simple tracking. Flightview is also very good, but has a history more like that of FE (RLM/Flightview in fact I think the first of the commercial trackers).

...I don't know why I'd be that interested in which one has more customers unless I was involved in the company  Smile

Flight Explorer is 9.95/month if you go to www.avweb.com (click on Flight Explorer on the left frame). It is an actual application that you download, then subscribe to. It is quite robust. Although I don't subscribe any more, I had lots more than $10 per month worth of enjoyment out of it. However, it is orientated towards flights in the US.

Bond007: Ok on your opinion. I respect and would agree with it if we were in 2001/2002. Anyway I believe they are not the leaders anymore (in software based flight tracking - despite whatever they say on their site).

I also do daily flight tracking work and we use AirNav at our company for 2 years. From what we've talked with them they are easily increasing their share market with their new AirNav Live Flight Tracker 6 and from what I know NASA, Rockwell Collins, Lockheed, Boeing and many airports and airlines use it (including mine). It started to be an aviation enthusiast, got extremelly robust and now it is growing in the Professional market. If they are leaders? I don't know...

If you don't know the number of customers or the company income I don't know why you say "Flight Explorer is no doubt the business leader"...from what I've talked with a few people they were before but now...I simply don't know.

If we could make a comparison AirNav is the "Southwest Airlines" of flight tracking: cheap, easy and growing a lot. I would compare FE and FV to United/US Airways...old and expensive.

For Qxeguy: have a look at http://www.airnavsystems.com/anlv/orde.html : thier Gold solution offers you 60 (not 10) hours for $14.95 per month.

Just my 2 cents...

Flight Explorer is a quite powerful product which is primarily designed for and used by airlines, including several large ones.

Many of the other products are primarily for the FBOs and enthusiast users. Flight Explorer thus also come out with a basic stripped down version geared for this market.

The problem is that you're not the only insider in this business.
BTW have you read any reviews on websites about flight trackers recently?
I'm sorry but it seems you haven't...

Also NASA, Boeing, Tacoma Airport, Virgin Airways aren't exactly enthusiasts or FBOs...

The only point here is that your company is paying 3 or 4 more times for less quality. If you think that doesn't matter that's your problem.  Wink

I've used both Flight Explorer and Airnav's.

FE is great. It's easy, very fast, and flexible, with a better interface, but slightly more basic overall.

Airnav would be the best if it wasn't so damn slow. Zooming, selecting, moving the view is in my book unbearable. It has some great features though.

I currently have Airnav, but I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription until I know the software is much snappier. Back to FE for now.

Well, unfortunately you misunderstood my 'insider' comment.
My company doesn't pay anything for it's flight tracker  Wink

BTW is has little to do with quality, but functionality and features. IMO most of the trackers are good quality, but differ in features and that is reflected in price (and perhaps different markets).

Actually the prices pretty well reflect what you get for your money....and remember not everyone wants to pay extra for flashy maps, in fact the original post was for free trackers.

...oh, and if you have lots of website reviews of Flight Trackers why don't you post them - isn't that the whole purpose of this post ???

Dirkou...I think you're getting upset over nothing. Bond007 isn't saying Airnav is bad, but FE is currently more popular commercially. I have worked for more than one airline and know the inside scoop on several others, and FE is currently the product of choice. Not to say that Airnav would beat them sometime in the future. And my opinion, FE is great.

FE is my preferred A.S.D. program. The $10/mo. deal does not include the weather overlay...which I find critically important. It also only tracks flights in U.S. airspace incl HI and AK, parts of the Caribbean (San Juan area), Guam, the U.K., and New Zealand. It also shows flights that are to takeoff or land in any of the aforementioned areas...but at best it only estimates their progress when not in one of the covered areas (i.e. the tracks over the Atlantic).

I haven't used airnav in many years, mayhaps I will check-out their recent versions...

Just a technical note.

Most of the trackers all use the same FAA data feed, which only includes those flights in (or in/out) US airspace, and some UK data (see below).

The UK data is part of the same data feed, but is only available to qualified customers (i.e. airlines, or those that pay ATC fees), so unless you qualify for that data, the best you will get is all of the US/Carribean, Atlantic until about 30W, and some Pacific.

One or two (airnav), may also use ACARS data, but this has limited usage for comprehensive tracking.

As RDUDDJI mentioned, FE also has an agreement with New Zealand.

The decision is not a commercial one because you can already get this data from FE and the other guys if you are qualified.

The restriction is a legal one from the CAA and/or European ATC organizations.

I guess we can feel fortunate that even after 9/11 we have access to the detailed data that we do from the FAA....it's not consistent with how they usually work  Wink

Could you explain a little more...

Even the more textual ones like red1aviation.com, you can plug into search criteria, for example airport, airline, type etc. and get a list of flight plans.

Also, red1 and fboweb both have a flight history feature which lists all flights for a given flight number over the past x months.

With AirNav Live Flight Tracker 6 you can right mouse click over a flight, click "Show Flight Plan" and a yellow line will draw over the actual filled flight plan. Also with you right mouse you have lots of other functions accessible (filter, photos of tracked flights etc).

Have a look at: www.airnavsystems.com

It is the only multi window flight tracking application currently available on the market: this means that you can, for example, have 3 windows open at the same time with traffic over Florida, LAX and BOS (no need to pan, zoom, etc). It is great to track several airports simultaneously.

To me, there won't be a "good" flight tracker until the royal FAA stops blocking all the many foreign flight IDs they block. Someone on a previous thread said it had to do with some US military flights using the same codes. That's just great..

Seeing a rare ferry flight coming in for maintenance, being able to see the last flight of an airframe going to an airport to get parted out, catching a new plane on delivery, etc.. That's what I need the flight trackers for. Unfortunately very few of these flights are ever allowed to appear.

Well I would say at least 90% of the airlines are included in the trackers, including most of the foreign ones. Plenty of the deliveries from BFI and PAE show up on delivery.

Of course, very few foreign registrations show up, so if the airliner flies using reg as callsign, then unless it's an N-, you're right, you won't see it. This is a restriction by the foreign authorities and not the FAA by the way, and they just won't be involved with country by country discussions on who can see what (and maybe I don't blame them).

As for some of the airlines being blocked, yes, it was probably me on another thread, my example being RAM, where RAM is also used as a USN/USAF callsign ... again as much as I'd love to blame the FAA, it's just a bad coincidence it happens to be used by the military. It would probably make sense that the military do not use IATA/ICAO callsigns, but that's neither here nor there!
