United: Voted Best Premium Economy Class In World?

Tue Apr 19, 2005 11:29 am

I was watching a UA commercial on tv, and at the end of the commercial, the comment was "United, voted the best premium economy class in the world".

OK, i've never flown UA premium econ. so I can't make a judgement

My questions:

1) How/who was it voted?
2) Is their service that good?
3) What other carriers have premium economy and whose are betters than UA's?

Rememeber it said "in the world" and not just US of A.......i'm a bit skeptical on this...

It's just more legroom...not really a "premium economy," but on long flights, that extra four inches really makes a difference.

I think it was voted best by the readers of Business Travellers' Magazine (not sure on the name) for the past seven years.

I know BA offers premium econ, not sure about others.

UA should up the service for Int'l flights in Economy Plus.

VS was the first carrier to offer Premium Economy.

The voting tends to be very skewed. Not generally representative sample of the general travelling public. I don't know why airlines bother to make these sort of comments. Personally, it only pisses me off when the boasted about service is mediocre at best

What a joke. UA should be sued for making these bogus comments.

UA's premium economy service is rubbish in comparison to what's offered by BA, Virgin, or Eva Air, let alone what Singapore Airlines offer on their A345 flights. Its the same crappy UA service but with 4 extra inches of pitch. And unlike the other carriers, the seats aren't even any wider. You're still stuck in a basic Y class seat. These surveys are based on statistically laugheable surveys that primarily survey American passengers, who lo and behold, primarily fly their own carriers.

Incidentally, BA offer 38" of pitch in their premium economy while UA only offer 35", which is just about an inch more than what AA offer in their MRTC product.

Economy Plus is excellent...great service, plenty of legroom, and on a great airline at that. I've flown Eco+ domestically and internationally and have always been happy.

Go UA!!!!

Aren't we comparing apples and oranges here? BA markets their premium economy as a different class of service. If I buy and economy class ticket in BA or SQ I will end up with 31" of pitch while on UA as a 1P I will end up with atleast 35" of pitch. Yes, I will trade the 4 extra inches of legroom for the 300 channels on the IFE and the plastic smiles thank you. To me United E plus is simply the best economy product out there.

Economy Plus is excellent...great service, plenty of legroom, and on a great airline at that.

The service is no different than what you get in Economy, you don't get a separate cabin with privacy like you do on BA or VS, the pitch is lousy in comparison to the competition, and you have to dole out $ 5 for an alcoholic beverage.

Its acceptable if you're flying in the United States, but it sucks on an international route where the competition offer far superior products.

People here don't seem to realize that these surveys can be manipulated to produce the results required by the people who (usually) are paying for the survey in the first place. So, depending on the question, you can make it sound like the people who voted (and they can be a very limited sample of people) said something that they didn't really want to say. It's called "marketing".
So, for example, the question could be "Is UA's premium economy the 'best in the world' offered by a US airline?" The answer to that is probably a "yes", since they probably have the only p.e. service by a US carrier.
It's all in the way you ask the question.

What's the point of Economy Plus if you can't even get a seat in it unless you have status?

How can you sit there without paying through the roof if you don't have any FF status on UA? I really want to have my REAL assigned seat when I book my ticket as well.

Anyways, I refuse to pay over $500 more than a restricted/discounted UA Economy ticket on a SEA-SFO flight just to sit towards the front of a 757 and get 2-3" extra of seat pitch. Too little for too much. And that's why I've taken my business elsewhere.

So you have to pay more for Economy Plus? Is that what I hear you saying? I thought those seats were for any Mileage Plus member, it's just that they were issued in order of status.

You can also get a seat in E+ without status - you "only" need to buy a full-fare ticket.

I've always been quite happy with E+ - the extra legroom is all I need. I don't care about better service (and I've never had complaints about UA's service, neither on international nor on domestic flights), I certainly don't care about better IFE (practically never use it anyway), and I don't even care if I've got a "private cabin" if I'm sitting in C-class, so I honestly don't care about it in E+!

Unfortunately, my days of getting into E+ on my LH FTL card are over, so I'll have to see what I book from now on... and I'm not doing any travelling on business for the forseable time, so C-class is also out...

But, I too believe that UA's Economy Plus was hardly voted "Best Premium Economy Class in the World" - it might offer all I need or want from a premium economy class, but I'm well aware that most people have very different expectations from it.

Frank

UA's E+ is not a proper Premium Economy product - it has no seperate fare structure, no seperate cabin, no service differentiation of any kind. The only feature it has is a couple of inches of extra pitch. That's like calling bulkhead seats "Premium Economy" (which in fact some UK charter carriers do, or charge for anyway).

I mean, what would UA do if every single pax in Economy had paid full fare Y, and not one of them had tier status ? They can't give everyone E+ seats, and yet that is what they promise. Likewise, what if everyone on the flight had paid V class fares but had Super Top Million Mile Platinum status - they can't all have E+ seats - how is that fair ?

Indeed it is not the best Plus product around. But it is cheaper compared to the other airlines. You only have to buy M class or higher to get a seat without status and you only need premier status to get seats there for free. So it is somewhat of a "discounted premium class". I am quite happy to get it on international flights, since I am 6'5'' tall and really struggle with lower pitches. Of course it would be nice if they had a seat less per row, but I am really glad they have what they have.

Summarizing it, I wouldn't call it "worlds best", but it is indeed the one and only reason why I keep flying United.

Actually, you don't even need a full-fare ticket. High-fares/B works fine also. In addition, people on Priceline tickets, if they ask, or on el cheapo tickets, and there is noone in the food chain for E+, may be assigned into E+. Unlike BA or VS true economy + products, this is a semi-premium product. Also like NW's 333 front cabin with 34" of pitch.
What now?

Ia Orana All !

UTA started the premium economy trend before Eva Air and VS with a separate cabin on its DC 10 and B747. It was called Harmony and was first introduced on flights to Africa.
It was the same seating as Economy but had an amenity kit, the seats were a different colour and they had free champagne.

TWA had extra leg room in the early 90's on their MD80's and 727's, REALLY more leg room, but I believe it was the first ten or so rows of coach.

hmmm, dont know the answer to that, according to their web sites, both VS and Eva launched Premium Economy in 1992, but do not state which month!

Eva Air:

Virgin Atlantic:

Does anyone know which started first?

Well obviously, you missed the point of the product. E+ is not a different cabin, it is coach, and therefore it is the best coach product. United is just putting premium in front of it to make it sound better. However, VS, Eva and so on offer a completely different cabin that costs more money than regular coach, and this is like comparing apples and oranges. Also, SQ's coach on SIN-EWR,LAX may be better, but it's only on two routes, not on all of them.

It clearly states that E+ is based on a first come, first served basis.
