American,s Md 80 Question

Tue Apr 11, 2000 3:46 am

Is American putting more md-80's in the Miami hub? They must be because as I was spotting at MIA this weekend I have seen more of them than usual, and thats not a bad thing. At peak hours There are usually 5 or 6 of them during the weekend I counted 10 of them at the gates. Are they pulling them off other routes and allocating them to the Miami hub now?

Yes, they seem to add more MD-80's on flights out of the Miami hub. They must be taking a few MD-80's off other routes if they put some of them in MIA, obviously that must be happening since they are not adding anymore MD-80's to their fleet inventory. The MD-80 aircraft is now out of production and American isn't buying any from any other carrier apart from Reno Air.
American flies MD-80's from Miami to various destinations in the East Coast including Boston, NY La Guardia and Washington National. Notice that MIA is where you still see a lot of 727's.

Not Really...

Actually, the number of M80s in MIA has stayed pretty static over the past year. Typically, there are about 20-24 M80s scheduled out of MIA on a typical day. In the past year, the number has dropped as low a 16, but, that was during the month of September last year. Currently (April), AA has 21 M80s scheduled out of MIA on an average day.

Ben, to your point about the number of 727s in MIA, this is where the 727 MX base is located. So, naturally AA flies more 727 into MIA so that they can get their "B" checks. Good observation....

Well I always keep tabs on American's md-80's and when all of the tail trouble was going down a couple of months ago American had 23 daily flights using the md-80.Now the md-80's on the Miami-Tampa run are now 738's on at least 2 of the 3 jet flights from Miami-Tampa so that free's up one or two them, and I am pretty sure there are more being pulled off from various other routes thru out American's route system. All I am saying is to see 10 md-80's in Miami at the same time is rare.Maybe one or two or three of the flights were late arrivals or something because i believe the northeast was getting hit with some snow. The norm is 4 to 5 and occasionally 6 to 7 not 10.

is AA pulling out more Md-80's from DFW and putting them in chicago and Miami because i have noticed that there are more 757's at DFW and less Md-80's so i think that they are flying more Md-80's out of MIA now, good observation

AA 738 727 MD80

As American takes delivery of the new 737-823's, they are placing them in MD-80 routes, and the MD-80s are replacing the 722's. So it is quite possible that the 727 routes in and out of Miami are now MD-80s.
