This explains why the super cheap fares to Ft. Lauderdale popped up on my American screen this morning.

USA 3000 does not fly to MDW, only ORD service.
See you up front!

I guess this also explains why AA is dropping STL-FLL after 4 Sept....

There's got to be more to AA dropping this flight than USA3000 entering with only 3 flights a week...

No, it doesn't. AA has planned a reduction in FLL-STL (it is not ending) service for about two months now.

AA isn't dropping FLL-STL. The service is going weekend-only in June. It will resume daily service in December, although that is not yet shown in the schedules.

FLL-ATL, FLL-STL, FLL-ORD, FLL-BWI...hmmm! I wonder why they are doing this, going against another LCC on 3 of those 4 and going against Delta on 2 and AA on 2...seems like a death trap.

If I need to get to ATL this summer though, I'd definently try USA3000. I have heard some good and some bad but I am willing to give them a fair shot. I would have flown them to EWR this month, but they do not fly weekends.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

It is not a death trap. USA 3000 is a scheduled charter operator. The huge majority of seats on these planes are pre-sold to vacation companies, cruise ship companies, etc. There is absolutley no threat to AA, DL, etc. and there will be little, if any, competitive reaction.

I worked for them at FLL:

The good: New Planes, Great Staff, Full Meal Service, Comfortable Seats.
The bad: Manual check-in (ACK!), Constant Delays!, low frequencies (no daily flights).
If you really want to do it, you will find a way; if you don't, you'll make excuses.

Corp...you hit the nail on the head...that is exactly what I have heard. I'm glad I didn't see the look on the employees' faces when this new service was announced, I'm sure it gets a little confusing with the manual check in. Also, delay wise, from what I have seen, if there have been dealys, the employees have not announced the dealy, and most of the (4 or 5) flights that I have been in the terminal for have seemed to depart on time. Although it is a little confusing when you have a Cleveland flight leaving right next door to a Philadelphia flight at FLL as for some reason USA3000 flights have only been listed on the gate just once.

But still, I'm willing to give it a shot. Will the meal service and movie be the same on a short hop like FLL-ATL?
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

Glad they're adding FLL-CMH. The South Florida market finally seems to be getting some more attention from Columbus, especially with MIA-CMH finally going daily. It'll be nice to have a mainline, low fare option to Ft. Lauderdale (albeit twice weekly) instead of paying an arm and a leg to sqeeze into an ERJ for 2.5 hours on Delta Connection.

USA3000 is a mix of scheduled and charter service. All of our domestic service is scheduled service with none of the seats pre-sold to vacation companies or cruise ships.

The most recent schedule (4/16/05) shows the last SaSu MD-80 service on 9/4/05, with nothing to FLL after that. What do you know that the folks at AA scheduling do not, hmmmm Mark??  Wink

Like I said, USA 3000 is a scheduled charter airline. The majority of their seats are pre-sold to vacation companies, travela agencies, and cruise lines. Only a handful of seats are actually sold to regular consumers just purchasing tickets. The flights are not daily, and they barely add any capacity to the market. AA and others have no incentive to match the fares of a scheduled charter airline.

Yes, I read what you wrote the first time. But I also know that ever since the arrival of USA 3000 into the St. Louis market, American, along with the other airlines here often matched or tried to beat fares offered on USA 3000 around the same travel dates and times. I also know that before USA 3000 arrived, fares to Tampa and Ft. Myers were usually above $200, sometimes as high as $270 or more, but rarely have they been above $200 since USA 3000 arrived.

I also know that above, I read from an apparent USA 3000 employee, the U.S. domestic services are not pre sold to vacation companies. I have also been told this directly by USA 3000 employees I have chatted with at St. Louis and Cleveland.

Thanks.

Mike, I was wondering if maybe you (or anyone else for that matter), might know what the breakdown, percentage-wise, of U5's total flights is when broken down into scheduled services and charter services?

Thanks,

Yes sir, you are correct, if I had expanded my date range somewhat I would have noticed this...

Sad to see AA doing weekends only when not too long ago they had 2 X 757 daily. Any chance of STL-FLL becoming extinct, ala STL-PHX?? Yields must be absoultely brutal with WN and now USA 3000 entering the mix....

Living in St. Louis and being at the airport watching those flights almost always go out full, I have to wonder what is going on there. There are plenty of people from St. Louis that commute back and forth between here and Ft. Lauderdale to second homes or resorts or what have you to fill those planes. Many were irked when it was just one flight a day. The Saturday and Sunday flights will undoubtably be mostly taken up by people going out on cruises, so if you really want to fly American (and a lot of these people I know try to avoid Southwest as much as they can), they'll now have to connect through Chicago or Dallas. I'm surprised they haven't at least put an Eagle flight doing a weekday run.

AA wants that traffic to use MIA. MIA-STL is now upgauged to two daily 757s. I can confirm that a third daily is like to be put in place in November.

that does not surprise me one bit. seems like they've also put more 757's on the dfw route as they have scaled back services to florida, phoenix, etc.

In response to USAFHUMMER, presently more than 50 percent of our flights are totally scheduled domestic service out of STL. On the balance of the Charter flights offering Apple Vacation packages, our current MBJ offer some seats as scheduled service, booked through the USA3000 reservations center, travel agents or our ticket counters, the CUN flights offer "Public Charter" seats in conjunction with the Apple Vacation seats and our upcoming PUJ flights will offer a mix of Apple Vacation and scheduled . Hope this clears it up a bit. The FLL flights starting on Sept 6 will be totally sheduled service.
