KLM Plane Returns To Schiphol

Thu Apr 21, 2005 8:00 pm

I have just read on the local Amsterdam tv website (AT5) that a defective KLM plane returned to Schiphol. Here's a rough translation:

"On Wednesday alert passengers on a flight to New York noticed a strange vibration on one of the wings. One passenger alerted the P/A's to this, who in turn informed the pilots. The pilots noticed the unusual vibrations too, but cockpit instruments showed nothing amiss. ATC at Schiphol elected to order the plane (which was already over the Atlantic) to return to the Netherlands for inspection."

Unfotunately the article doesn't provide any more details such as aircraft type, etc.

Another case of bad reporting here me thinks  Wink

ATC at Schiphol would not control the aircraft when it is over the Atlantic  Wink

Thanks

Hi Lee,

No, I don't have any links (besides AT5.nl). I was hoping somebody else might know more. AT5 is generally very reliable.

Such a return would most likely be ordered by company headquarters rather than ATC (given that the aircraft was well underway apparently).
ATC would have ordered a diversion to the nearest airport large enough to take it.

The Captain will have elcted to turn the plane round, nobody else. Although he will have been in discussion with Amsterdam mechanics and HQ

If it was headed to NYC, its either a 777 to JFK or a 767 to EWR.

Or it could be 744 (flight #643) as well in the evening. However, Fligth #643 arrived at 9:20PM (5 mins later than it's scheduled time). Flight #641 (777 service) arrived at 11:33PM at night (normal scheduled arrival time 4:10PM). So it must have been the 777 service (Flight 641).

Oops my bad - I was under the impression that both KL flights to JFK was 777.

Well you are not wrong... sometimes it is 777 and sometimes 744. But the last couple of days it has been 744. However, KLM is now 2x 6 days a week to JFK.

I may have been a 744 or a 777. KLM had some problems recently with the T7, so I assume that it was the 777 the one involved in the accident. Are there any more news or something?
