Famous Airplanes On TV, Movies And Music Videos.

Tue Apr 11, 2000 11:06 am

Did the L-1011-100 in Steven King's movie The Langoliers belong to TWA? If so What was the ship and reg #s. The flight deck looked a bit different too. Was it an L-1011 flight deck? What plane did Foo Fighters use in their video "Learn to Fly" and what airline it belonged to? I thought the interior was a 707 maybe TWA, Pan Am or Eastern. I did see a UAL 727-200 making a decent toward the end of the music video though. There was a TWA 747-100 with it's old double red stripe logo on an A-team sitcom. In the show the plane was hijacked. Can anyone tell me if this was the plane that happened to be the doomed TWA flight 800 if not what happened to the aircraft? Was it scrapped? Can anyone else tell me stories about planes that starred in famous roll in the movies or music videos.

In the movie "Liar, Liar" there is a Tower Air 747 towards the end of the movie. You can see the Reg. #, and i cant remember it off the top of my head, but it is visible.

On an episode of "JAG", I saw Wunala Dreaming or was it Nalanji Dreaming shown pulling up to the gate at Sydney as they were about to return home after trying an American deserter.

Foo Fighters Video

Wed Apr 12, 2000 3:25 am

In the Foo Fighters video "Learn to Fly", the cockpit scenes were shot in the same one that thy used for the movie "Airplane".
I think that it is supposed to be a 707 flightdeck.
I guess the rest of the interior shots are from the same plane as well.

My friend was the prop master on the Langolers. he got be in the plane during numerous touch and go's (for filming reasons) he said the ex-eastern pilots were very cool and loved being part of movie. i think he said the plane belonged to cathay pacific, and every thing was filmed in Maine because Stephen king is terrified of flying..

One I have wondered about was the DC-4/ C-54 used in the forgettablely bad final scenes of "The Experts" with John Travolta. It was suppose to be Russian, with the big red star on the tail. But it was actually a flying a/c, not just a taxiing. Like so many others we see.

I saw the "Quantum Airways" 747-200 used in that silly NBC movie about the virus on-board the airplane parked in Shelton Washington, minus engines at a very small airport, it still had "Quantum" titles. There were also some ex-Aero Peru 727-200s and Avianca 727-100s and well as UA 727-100/200s and what looked like an ex-Arco/BP 727-100. Interesting collection at this very small airfield.

In Passenger 57 I believe the L-1011 from that one was an ex or perhaps current LTU plane and who can forget the exploding 747-100 from Die Hard-II that was in the Evergreen Int'l scheme.

In the movie "Speed", there was a scene where the bus rams into a plane. Was that a 737? or was it something else?

That plane in "Speed" which the bus rammed into looked quite like an antique and had 4 engines. I think it was a B-707.

Yep--the L1011 in "Pax. 57" was from the old LTU scheme. Didn't look too bad...

In "Turbulence", the Trans-Continental Airlines 747-200 was a re-painted Tower Air 747-200 (FF reg), as well as the pilot who helps the FA land the plane, that plane was a Tower Air machine (the only FF plane that doesn't look like it's about to fall to pieces!).

"Three Guys Named Mike" (194-)was filmed using MANY AA planes.

Movie Planes

Wed Apr 12, 2000 11:48 pm

'Liar-Liar' - Tower Air Boeing 747-212B (N618FF)
'Executive Decision' - American International Airways Boeing 747-200 (ex-MEA machine) currently registered as N707CK
'Longaliers' - TWA TriStar-200.....does anybody know the reg. ???
'Airport 75' - AA Boeing 747-123....now flying for Polar Air Cargo as -123SF
need to find out the reg.
Airport 77' - Safe to say it's probably an AA 747-123

There is another movie that features a Western DC-10 but can't remember the name of the movie.

Triple Seven:
I think the movie with the Western DC-10 that you are thinking of is "Commando" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rae Dawn Chong (sp?). Arnie is drugged (?) and taken aboard the DC-10 for a trip to an unknown Latin American country and he manages to wake-up, incapacitate his captors, get into the cargo hold and jump out of the plane all during the take-off roll! Wow!

There was a Jean Claude Van Damme movie (I think it was kick boxerpart ?) At the end of the movie there was a United Airlines 747-200 in the old colors. reg #? Does anyone know? What ever happened to the plane. I also saw some of the old James Bond Movies with Rogor Moore as Bond. I think in "Live or Let Die Bond is flying on a Pan Am 747-100 from LHR-JFK in the begining of the movie.
By the way the airport scene in the Backstreet Boys music video; was that LAX? In the video was also a Boeing 727-200. Did anyone catch the reg # or knows what airline it belonged to?

I once saw 2 Pan Am 727-200s in a movie starring Bill Pullman in 1987(I think). Does anyone know the reg#s and what became of them?

For whatever reason, many music videos and commercials are made in Terminal 2 (mostly used by NW) at LAX. There is a current video on MTV/BET where the male singer steps onto a NW twin-engine (looks like a 757, but I only saw the front shot). Also, Wyclef Jean used Terminal 2 for his song "Gone til November", where at the end he's the last person on a NW DC-10. Neither of the N-numbers can be seen.

In madonnas ray of light video there is an scene at an airport where there is a NW DC-10 with the logo from the tail is removed. Also have any of you watched Baywatch Hawaii, sometimes they show a Hawaiian Airlines DC-10 taking off, on the show today they showed a HA DC-10 taking off and I could see a CO 747 parked at some hangar.

Also I forgot about the end of Real World Hawaii, they showed quite a few planes on the last episode, I was shocked that they showed planes taking off and just planes in general on MTV.

I used to work for an aircraft interior shop in Van Nuys, CA (just a few miles from Hollywood). They did a couple bizjet interior mockups that have been used in a number of movies and TV shows. I think they built one for the Jetstar scene in "Conair."

They also have a Caravelle that they use for various TV and movie shots, both interior and exterior. One production company had a three or four DeHavilland Beavers that were used in Harrison Ford's "Seven Days, Six Nights"

Airport 79 was filmed using some of Air France's Concordes, one of which was the doomed F-BTSC that crashed in July.

I saw a thing on the Discovery Channel, I think, about AF1. They said that the production company borrowed a 742 from a major airline (can't remember, but United sounds familiar) and got permission from USAF to paint the aircraft in AF1 colors for ground shots only, I believe. All other shots were with regular 742s with computer repaints. NBCs 'The West Wing' has a similar setup, except they borrow from United and totally repaint the aircraft in AF1 colors by computer.

There is a rapper who has is on board a 727 for much of the video. His name is Lil' Zane and the song is called "Callin' Me". There is an R&B song on BET where they are on the runway and a 747 is taking off behind them, so the nose is going up right above their heads. Forgot the name of the group and song, but the next time i see it I will remember and put it on here.

Question About Planes Used In Movies

Tue Sep 12, 2000 8:40 pm

I wonder how much movie producers have to pay airlines to film inside the cabins of aircraft and where they do it (at the gate, in the hangar, or - ?). Or do movie producers use mock-ups for the most part?

Regarding the 707 used in "Speed," I understand that aircraft was LEASED for the movie, not purchased. Then they blew the damned thing up! How do you return a leased piece of property that has been intentionally destroyed???

SkyWestPilot:

I saw ground shots of a Caravelle in an episode of Diagnosis: Murder (CBS) and a made-for-tv movie called 'Running Mates' that was on TNT (Turner Network Television). I seem to remember a blue and red cheat line. Were these shots your Caravelle?

If it is, do you have the reg#? I've been wondering this for months!

RWally--That was what I mentioned in my post. However, since I only saw the part of the aircraft you see from the jetway, I didn't get a reg. number.

DeltaRNOMD80--That was the video that I saw. The guy's name is gonna bother me, cause I can't remember it either. They spent the first 2 minutes or so at LAX, then hopped in their Mercedes and cruised around LA for the last 2 minutes...If anyone knows who this guy is, that would be great. Thanks.

Virgin 747-200

Wed Sep 13, 2000 2:47 am

In an episode of West Wing, they used a Virgin Atlantic 747-200 (G-VGIN) for some filming at Dulles International Airport. "Scarlet Lady" arrived about 2pm, and left at about 7pm on schedule. The TV show only had about 2 hours of time to film using the plane. It was meant to be Air Force One, with some post filming touch-ups.

Any RUSH fans out there?
On the sleeve of the 'Fly by Night' album, they have a drawing of a DC-8 landing above the lyrics. This is only in the LP sleeve. You will not get this with the CD, cassette or 8track.

Also, on the opening credits of the TV show 'The Golden Girls', they show a B727-200 landing.

By the way, does anyone remember a night-time soap-opera called 'Flying High'. This was between 1977-78. I think they used a 747-100 for this show.

AKelly728:

Yes, that's the Caravelle. In fact, I think they've used it in several episodes. I was there for one of the times and got to meek Dick Van Dyke and his son!

Sorry, though, I don't have any information on the airplane itself. Its far from airworthy; the engines long gone (just empty nacelles). The inside is nice because the interior people did it up for somebody a while ago for some production company.

On a side note, I think most movie companies will have a mock-up of an interior made. It's probably less expensive and easier to manipulate to get the right shot. Most airlines would not like it so much if the film crew had to rip out rows of seats to accomodate the camera, lighting, and sound equipment.
