Bogota -Eldorado Airport

Sat Apr 23, 2005 12:59 am

Hi friends,

I've never been to Bogota-Eldorado airport but I remember an interresting article in 1979 in the Avianca flying revue. At this time the airport was apparently not very big with a terminal equiped with 2 piers but without any aerobridges, and a single runway.
Avianca was flying from and to bogota with some 747, 707, 727 fleet and in the article we can see a lot of European airlines with wide-bodied like 747, or DC 10 and many South and North American airlines.

There was a masterplan for the future with 2 new runways and a nice new terminal with 3 half-moon piers, one for Avianca and the 2 others for domestic airlines and international airlines.

What about Eldorado today and can you please show the airport with recent photos please?

Thank you very much. DID747

El Dorado today is different from what you have described; no it has two runways, a main terminal with two piers and airbridges, two cargo terminals which makes the airport the busiest cargo airport in Latin America and a secondary terminal called "Puente Aereo" which handles most of Avianca domestic flights. 8 Million Passenges pass through El Dorado each year, however, the airport has become two short for the large demand, at some times of the day it is not possible to walk on the first floor of the main terminal due to the long lines and the several planes departing more or less at the same time.

Aeronautica Civil has started the process to give the airport to a private concessor which has to improve the airport so it will handle 16M Pax by 2025, they are now looking for the offers and from what I know the main candidate is Airports de Paris; take a look at there you will find further information, some pictures, etc.

AeroCivil (Colombian Aviation Authority), where you can find some info on El Dorado and its Plan Maestro.

This is the international terminal:

I have only been once to the Puente Aereo many, many years back. But I hear it was renovated by Summa and it was quite nice. Guess they'll have to renovate it again!

The Domestic and International concourses of El Dorado Terminal are very nice once you pass security and head towards the gate area. It is small, but very convenient. One you arrive from abroad, the passage towards Immigration is very nice, addorned with pictures from the Gold Museum as well as from National Parks.

Once you reach baggage claim it's a bit chaotic and you can tell that area has not been renovated in years, as well as the check-in area which looks like the original when the building was first built!

Is this true?

What is true is that the second runway 13R is the second largest in the world width*lenght.

The master plan will see the demolition of Puente Aereo to build a 20-gate international terminal, and leaves the former terminal renovated for domestic flights (22 gates between both piers), also, it will see the building of a 1200m runway for small aircraft operations (up to 50 seaters). So in 2025 we will have an A380 capable, 3 runway, 44 gate airport.
