Air-India Golden Oldie In LHR

Sat Apr 23, 2005 1:54 am

To all the AI buffs out there - At approx 14:45 (British Summer Time) this afternoon, I saw an Air-India B747-200 on approach to runway 9L. The B742 was replaced by the B744 on the London run a long time ago, and I'm wondering why this old beauty visited LHR today? If it was a replacement for the regular 744 flights, I wonder if it continued to JFK? Any info would be welcome.

VT-EGC has been subbing for the 744 on AI 121 BOM-AMD-LHR for the past few rotations. She operated in last Sunday as well.

I meant to post but forgot. Sorry. Look for her again on Sunday afternoon.

Sean

Thanks for the information as always. I was under the impression that AI's B742s did not have TCAS and were therefore not allowed to fly into Europe and the US under the new RVSM legislation. Also, what happens to the first class passengers for these flights, because as far as I am aware these aircraft only have business and economy?

Sean, how long will ESC operate ex-AMD? In summer, I will fly back into India, and I like the idea of flying one if the classics again - they are amazing!  Wink

Wow....I was under the impression that all AI classics had been retired. looks like I was mistaken. How long will VT-EGC be around in the AI fleet, and also is this the only classic flying in the AI fleet. (besides the 300 series)
Thanks

Mrniji - AI's seat plans on the website are outdated. A few years ago the 742 and 743 fleet seat configurations were changed so that first class was only available on the 744s. To the best of my knowledge, the 742s have business class in Zone A and on the upperdeck, and the 743 has business class only on the upperdeck.

They have been retired from scheduled service since last October. However, VT-EGA and VT-EGC are still airworthy and are periodically used to substitute for other aircraft in the event of maintenance or other unforseen circumstances.

Quoting Mrniji (Reply 5):

Right now the plan is for her to operate again only on Sunday 24th April. The 744 will return to the route on Friday 6th May.

It was more than just a few years ago actually. IIRC, this happened around 1999 which was probably the time that the website seatmaps were last updated.

But anyway, bottom line is that EGC (or maybe EGA) will be back in London on Sunday afternoon operating AI 121 so this may be the last chance some of you guys will have to spot an AI classic at Heathrow.

Sean, if that mysterious 74E does not arrive (details please!), could it happen that DEL-LAX-FRA will be operated by 742? That would be awesome!

What about crew currency? Does AI maintain flight crew exclusively for these 2 742's or are the 744 crews cross certified to fly the 742. And doesn't the 742 require a First Officer? Where does the FO come from?

The 2 remaining B747-237Bs have crew commonality with the B747-337Ms that are still in active service, so there are still crew with currency on the aircraft.

People, I swear

I was sitting at JNU (close to DEL a/p) with friends and was talking (and spotting, what the others didn't realize) - and I am 100 % sure that an AI 742 classic landed! Which one was it, how was it routed? It was a gr8 surprise. And although I was not close, and although it was dark: it is a beautiful plane, and the polished underbelly was visible in her own lights and made her the queen of the skies..

I am really sure (no, it was not the overconsumption of vodka Big grin ) - any information on this flight appreciated!

By the way, the plane approached DEL around 1015 pm - according the AI DEL arrivals, it can only be the flight from Osaka (via HKG) or Tokyo.. does anyone know whether one of these flights was served by 742 out of schedule?

VT-EGC operated AI 121 on BOM-AMD-LHR on May 1, so it was parked at Heathrow during the time you describe. I believe that VT-EGA may have been used to pinch hit on AI 308 of April 30 for one of the Combis that went tech. That aircraft returned to Delhi as AI 301 of May 1 which would have been landing in DEL approximately at the hour you described.

Also, if anyone is interested, AI 121 to LHR is currently slated to be operated by the 747 classic on May 6, May 8 and May 13.

Maybe its kust me, but there is something "romantic" about these classics. .maybe it was coz as I kid I used to travel them quite often. I rremember at FRA, LHR etc, seeing these aircrafts, with the shining polished underbelly, the windows etc made it the beauty of the location. And somehow, the smaller upperdeck reveals some great memories in me, when AI flight attendands carried me up to the pilot through the first class.. I remember these planes serving in the Golden 80s, when air travel was more than reaching B from A.. Its just sad who these really old ladies will be scrapt soon.. hence I was really excited seeing one land, without expecting it. I just wish I could fly one of the two again! Sorry, this is cheezy, but whatsoever..

In case anyone is interested, AI 121 of May 8 was actually operated by the 743 Combi VT-EPX.

As of right now, the last scheduled classic to visit London will be on Friday, May 13 as AI 121.

Can someone provide details of how the 747 fleet of AI is rotated, or if it has been discussed please provide me with a link.

BTW, i went on friday night for a drive to Terminal 1A with my friend, parked the car and was watching the aircrafts that were taking off and those that had just landed.
Between 00:30-01:45 i saw 2 AI 744s and 3 AI 310s, Sean can you tell me where they were headed
Other usual departures included the usual,
AZ-MD-11,SQ-773,NW-DC10,LX-330, and MELs very own BD which took off from runway 09.
Also saw the LH 744 in star alliance colours land in.
Good time to spot.
