Getting To Phoenix / Baggage Question

Sat Apr 23, 2005 2:08 am

I'm off to PHX the first week in May from the UK. I'm looking at booking a Virgin return ticket to JFK (to ride the 346), then taking a separate ticket JFK-PHX. When arriving at JFK, would I have to clear immigration then check-in again for my on going flight with a separate airline? Or would my bags be checked in all the way PHX at LHR?

Thanks for the help.

You have to clear customs at JFK as that is your point of entry into the United States. Once you claim your luggage and clear customs you would then check in with your airline taking you to PHX, as PHX from JFK is a domestic flight.

Would getting from the baggage reclaim in the Terminal Virgin use to check in for AA or America West be difficult? I have been once to JFK back in 94 and I'm afraid I am not familiar with it at all.

Cheers

There is shuttle buses that connect the terminals and they are clearly marked and easy to use.

Captain,

since you are booking both tickets separate (LHR-JFK-LHR and JFK-PHX-JFK) I believe VS will not check you all the way through PHX. Why don't you give them a call, they'll probably explain you what you need to do. But just in case, give yourself a couple of hours between flights in case VS can't check you. If they do then you can do some spoting around JFK

BTW, you will have to go through customs and passport check at JFK no matter what

Thanks for your help. I knew that I would clear immigration at JFK, I just wasn't sure about my baggage. I guessed I would have to check it in.

I haven't booked the tickets yet, there are cheaper options to get to PHX but the pull of an A346 with V-port is proving strong  Smile

I booked my tickets last night, not exactly cheap but still it should be a good trip. I'm flying VS45 into JFK arriving at around 12:10, then departing JFK direct to PHX at 18:15 on America West. I think that gives me more than enough time to get through immigration, get my bag and check in again.

On the way back my flight gets into JFK at 17:18, I have to be checking in for my flight home at around 19:00. Is this enough time to get my baggage and get from terminal 7 to terminal 4?

Both of your connection situations work fine. You will have lots of "spotting" time after you clear customs and on the way back just make sure you get your bags right away and take the inter-terminal shuttle.

Have a great trip.

Cheers Mike

I don't mind having all that time to kill at JFK. Not a bad airport to spend a few hours  Smile

It will be great to be back in New York, even though I am stuck at the airport (not so bad  Smile ).I have great memories of the city from my trip in 94.

Roll on my first long haul Airbus ride and hello V:Port!!

On your return flight when you check in for the flight in PHX, show them your connection confirmation and they should be able to check your luggage all the way threw for you.

Luv2fly That would be great if they could do that. Is it worthwhile askin at LHR if I could be checked in all the way through. Don't VS have some sort of agreement with HP? Codeshares etc?

Cheers

America West does have an interline baggage agreement with Virgin. We are actually a codeshare partner with them now! It is very simple for us to check your luggage all the way through to London. Just be aware that some agents don't know how to do it, only because it is not something that is done frequently. So hope you get a good one because it can be done!

HPforLife that sounds good to me Big grin

Is JFK-PHX one of the longest flights HP operate in terms of nm / journey time?

yes it is about 5hours 30 minutes average on A320. and hopefully you get one of our new aircraft featuring all leather seats and new redesigned interior. We also have the BOS-LAX during summer time only is the longest route on A319

Yes they do, though once you land in JFK you will have to claim your bags and clear customs and immigration upon arrival into the USA! Though if they tag your bags to go to PHX for you in LHR then once you do the customs and immigration at JFK you could then hand the bags back to VS and they would get them over to HP.

CactusTECH, what are the chances of getting a new A320 on the flight? Those leather seats sound good to me! 5.5hrs is a long flight, I'm looking forward to it. Is the IFE any good on board?

Luv2fly, So I wouldn't have to check in with HP at JFK. Just drop my bags with a VS representative at JFK and go to the gate after clearing immigration?

Cheers

As long as you have your HP boarding pass that is correct.
