Airbus: "Strong Possibility" 1st A380 Flight Next Week!

Sat Apr 23, 2005 4:26 am

Yes, I just received an email from Airbus, saying:

We would like to inform you that there is a strong possibility that the A380 will fly next week. We cannot give you an exact date and time as maiden flights are subject to many conditions that we cannot control such as weather conditions.

Therefore, from Monday 25 April, please consult our web site every morning (GMT+2) for more information.

When it flies, I'll believe it. Until then, I'll just wait and watch...I'm sick of hearing "strong possibility" of flying this week, oh sorry, we have to push it back to next week, wait, now it's going to be next Monday...it's getting old.

Probably not nearly as sick as other folks are of hearing ignorant immature (Anti-A380, Anti-who-knows-whatever-else) remarks like this one right here!

(Kaman. Find something better to do instead, or learn more about flight testing, or something. It's getting old)  fluffy

As for the A380 frankly I think it's probably sort of good that the weather's so uncooperative this week, as I'm sure the flight test investigative guys have lots of little things to look at and maybe even check or tweak even after every rolling test and especially RTO that the pilots carry out. Plus the weather delays spreads out the media crush and panting expectations a bit as well, which can't be a bad thing for this sort of major premiere-type event.

My remark was not ignorant nor anti-A380. I want to see it fly, I just don't think Airbus should keep tagging us along, changing dates and what not. When they are 100% positive it will fly a certain day, excluding unpredicatble events such as poorly forcasted weather, THEN and ONLY THEN should they annouce it. Until then, keep us in the dark.

I know perfectly well why the A380 is not flying yet. And it shouldn't fly until Airbus knows it's ready. But Airbus should also not be releasing possible dates, because we get into stupid fights like this. The day it flies will be...the day it flies. April, May, September, whenever...it doesn't matter. I'd rather see a safe, successful flight than a rushed failure.

Be fair FriendlySkies. Europe doesn't necessarily have the good weather of America. Besides, this is a brand new huge aircraft with more things to go wrong. You have to expect them to sort through some problems. The same thing has gone on with other new aircraft from all manufacturers.

If the A380 does fly next week (Monday or so), it would be a way to mark a milestone in my own life: My 30th birthday (nearly a third of a century)! (Monday is my birthday, and my first birthday living in London as an American student).

What better way to mark my birthday (or the week of such) than by watching the first flight live on Airbus.com!

(Yes, I got the same invitation from Airbus too).

Slight difference...Airbus was basically never the one to announce any flight. Always rumors, and unofficial information. This is the first email that Airbus sends out regarding the flight. I'm sure that whenever the weather is right next week, it's going to happen.

Airbus is not building the airplane so that all of us who are into this sit here wondering whats going on, and when it's gonna happen, though. I highly doubt they're sitting in a boardroom going "okay, lets let them hang another day guys" HAHA  Smile

They've added the whole functionality to their website JUST for people like us, to keep anyone who may be interested in this, happy.

Ask MOST people you know, who you've never had a conversation about the "big double decker" airplane, and almost NO ONE has heard about it here in North America. People don't care, only we do.

by the way, I didn't take your post as anti-a380 either.

You probably all know that there has been a possibility to join Airbus' mailing list for the first flight of 380. Well this was the first email ever from that mailing list.

Just as LHSebi said here earlier:

Quoting LHSebi (Reply 14):
Slight difference...Airbus was basically never the one to announce any flight. Always rumors, and unofficial information. This is the first email that Airbus sends out regarding the flight

If some of you does has not joined Airbus email list, here is what Airbus has emailed:

"Dear LordHowe,

The Airbus team is pleased to include you among the privileged visitors who are offered the possibility to watch the live broadcast of the A380 First flight on Airbus.com.

Just before the day of the first flight, the site will display pages dedicated to the event, including a special A380 lounge reserved for watching the live broadcast of the first flight.
Find below your personal access information to enter the "A380 Lounge":
Login: XXXX
Password: ZZZZ

Your login and password are personal. They are valid for this event only, and will not allow several simultaneous connections on the day of the event.

Please be aware that your company's firewall may prevent you from watching live broadcasts.

We look forward to sharing this aviation milestone with you.

The Airbus team."

So, if they tell us to consult their website from Monday and tell us at the same time that "Just before the day of the first flight the site will display pages dedicated to the event..." we can understand from this that it most definitely will not be on Monday!!

LordHowe

Perhaps they could enlist the new pope to control the weather while the A380 flew? Now _that_ would be a spectacle.

Good one, Joni  Smile

He hasn't done much for them yet. They can't take off to the south, straight over the city - so ideally they need a north wind and good visibility. Neither of which is currently forecast:-

If it doesn't fly next week, I'd say participation in Paris is at risk due to the need for flight testing to support delivery.

Why doesn't Airbus just announce the official date? I mean it is in their best interest. Instead, they are having people run around with no clue when it will be. I mean, it is a huge event so why not set a date and make it official? I wonder if they are having problems with the A380 and maybe it can't fly!!!!....  stirthepot   Wink

There can't BE an 'official date', CORULEZO5. Apart from any other factors (and I agree with you that there may still be problems with the aeroplane) they need the weather to be at least reasonable; preferably perfect. The test crew are risking their necks, after all........

There is an official date!

It is Tuesday 26th of April - if the weather and other conditions permit it. If not, then it is any date after that that is good enough regarding to all these conditions.

It's all written in their email (which is here in reply 22) if you can read between the lines too. But as we (me too!) have learned here, being the maiden flight, they need a nice weather.

At this point, I can only be sure that it will fly by the time I go home for summer break by the first week of May. To be honest I thought it would fly in January, I did not know ther was a rollout ceremony. Now that I think about it, it would make sense to test up to takeoff.

Personally I can get sick of people who do not plan around the weather and proceed to complain about it. A good 95% of those in my age gap in my home towm are like that. I'm sure Airbus can't help investing in weather supercomputers as well...  Yeah sure

Here's an amateur video and a few more photos from Saturday 23rd of the last rolling before first flight. It sure looked windy and cold at TLS yesterday but the video is cool.

http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl...s/04-2005,a380-derniers-essais.php

(It's a french site but the link above automatically translates it to english.)

There are also some interesting details here about preparations for the first flight. City officials are preparing for 40,000 spectators to attend the first flight. It looks like two carparks and a road near the track will be blocked off for people to watch from. Also, a big screen tv will be setup in Toulouse town hall to accommodate another 10,000. 500 guards and police officers will be maintaining security around the airport. After the flight, 31,000 balloons will be released (don't ask me why 31,000 - it seems pretty arbitrary!).

And 500 very lucky guests & media will sit at a special platform in line with the location the A380 is expected to actually takeoff. I know one of the journalists who will get to stand there (lucky thing...   ), so I'll have to find out from her what it was like.

And supposedly, Airbus will give city planners 48 hours notice of first flight so they can prepare all the security arrangements, so hopefully that means a.netters will be able to get that sort of notice too.

Nice accelaration for a big plane!

That website states it's April 27 depending on weather ?!? The 5-day forecast show sunny for Tuesday 26 or Thursday 28. Looks like we I'm staying until late every night to make sure. What sucks is that if they fly at noon let's say, that would be 4 am Central US.

Great video footage!

Too bad that the wind was so bad, and it was taken from so far back.

The engines have a VERY distinct sound. Just like the 777 does. Very whiny and tinney sounding (VERY cool IMHO)!

I'm really excited! IF it does go this week, it will be a great week for me!

The News channel just had a footage on the A380. Jacques Rosay (test pilot for the first flight) said the aircraft was now "ready".

Apparently they need 2/3 days to "fully" prepare the aircraft for its first flight.

On both Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd, they apparently went faster and slightly lifted the nose LG!

On the "Meteo France" website, the forecast for Wednesday shows some good nothwesterly winds, as well as nice weather.

So Wednesday sounds more and more sure. But then again the weather.... old

I received an e-mail from Airbus to watch their website for live video footage which may start on monday 25th April. Does anyone have more information? The way I see it, the weather will be fairly good this coming week. I want to record the live broadcast, so any information is welcome Big grin
