F Class On NW Avro RJ

Sat Apr 23, 2005 4:59 pm

Flying MSP-SLC next week and have some miles to burn. I have never been on the Avro. Seems like a three hour flight on one of these might get lengthy. Is the upgrade worth it?

Yeah it is. I think they are as large as the old 727 First Class seats. They just might be those same seats...who knows?
I get the silver upgrade at times and a couple of weeks ago, was lucky enough to get F on the ARJ from DFW to MSP.
To answer your Q, I would go for it on the upgrade.

This is not to say that the upgrade wouldn't be worth it, but I would point out that the economy seats on Avros/146s with the 3-2 configuration are actually some of the widest in the industry. They are 19" wide, compared to 17" on NW's DC-9s and 17.2" on most other NW aircraft, right up to the 747-400! In fact, the cabin is wide enough that some airlines have used a 3-3 configuration (at least one--though fortunately not most--of AWAC's 146s had this layout...it was not very comfortable!). Seat pitch is also fairly generous at 33". My point is, 3 hours in an RJ85 is hardly the same as 3 hours in a CRJ or ERJ, and in fact could be more comfortable than 3 hours in a 747!

The Avro is an awesome airplane. I have ridden in F on it once and loved it! I would recommend it to anyone who loves to fly!

i have to agree that it is a most comfortable aircraft, i used to non rev on NW alot and flew the ARJ both in F and Y and both were very comfortable. just that first is a little better of course. also the climb out is sensational, they take such great angles sometimes at CVG.

I fly the Avro weekly between DTW & CVG in First. It's a great plane, comfy, and even on the short trips XJ does a great job.

I will take this over a CRJ or SAAB any day, and even the DC-9's you get once in a while are not nearly as nice.

Wow, so there is an aircraft in NW's fleet that won't crush my knees?! I've flown four flights on NW, and the only time my legs weren't turning blue was when I got the exit row. Other than that, I think NW is an OK airline, but no amount of professionalism can make up for incredibly poor seat pitch IMO.

If you do choose economy, try to get 6D!! Its an awesome seat with probably the most leg room on the plane (other than first) because there is no seat in front of it!

According to Seatguru.com NW seats pitch is average for the industry.

Just as an example:

AA 757: Economy Class: 31.0" pitch 17.2" width
CO 757: Economy Class: 31.0" pitch 17.2" width
NW 757: Economy Class: 31-33.0" pitch 17.2" width
US 757: Coach Class: 32.0" pitch 17.1" width
UA 757: Economy Class: 31.0" pitch 17.0" width

Yes, take the Avro in F. (though Y isn't bad either)

I have flown the ARJ many times, including MSP-ASE. That was an aswome ride up front. Meal was good (do they still serve a meal on that flight?), and the legroom was impressive for a RJ.

When landing, the approach is also very fun. The aircraft takes more of a nose down pitch than many planes I have flown on. Certainly was interesting when flying into ASE, surrounded by mountains, in a thunderstorm.

The thread is talking about the RJ-85, not the 757....

I commute on it sometimes, and the coach seats are more comfortable than any of the mainline NW Aircraft.... So in my opinion, coach is good, 1st class is the same as the other domestic mainline NW Aircraft- I don't know if I would use an upgrade myself...

According to this seatmap it looks as if there's alot of room in first class. And for a three hour flight.. I'd definitly go for the upgrade!  Smile

The RJ-85 is the only RJ that feels like a big A/C, in my opinion...

Perhaps it's time for a reality check. How exactly did I 'bash NW in general'? I said they were an okay airline but that I have a very negative view of their seat pitch. I have flown NW four times across three aircraft and found them all to be with poor seat pitch. Unlike general service levels, baggage handling, and on-time performance, you don't need to fly fifty times to get a good idea of what the seat pitch is like. You sit there for a couple hours and you make up your mind. The fact that seatguru says NW is average doesn't impact my view. I was there, I was uncomfortable, and I don't intend to fly them on a regular basis as a result.

I used to fly AA regularly when they still had MRTC, and I still fly WN regularly, which skytrax calls 32-33" pitch and is plenty comfortable to me. I've also flown United, Delta, and America West without issue, so long as it wasn't an RJ. Why UA and HP were fine while NW was terrible, I don't know. Maybe the seats were of a different design or they varied in pitch by a fraction of an inch, but it still made all the difference in the world to my knees.

If this is your first time on the ARJ, you'll get introduced to "flap Howl". You're gonna love it.

You'll love F. I've flown it a bunch (for anyone who thinks I'm lying because I'm in the 13-15 age range, I fly with my family TVC-MSP-ASE every year. Mom and Dad fly so we get upgraded to F often, since they are the highest in NW's frequent flyer program). Ok, back to the 85 (I still call it the 146!) There are no TVs in the seats, and yes they are the old 727 seats. They are big, a little lean on padding, but still comfortable. You get better service, as usual. Have fun!

That's an awful lot to say about someone you know absolutely nothing about. In fact, your childish commentary says a lot more about you than it could ever hope to say about me. Are you this ignorant and rude in person as well?

=> Loyalty is overrated. All US airlines are virtually identical in coach.
=> I flew AA regularly until they decided to get rid of MRTC.
=> At that point, AA was no longer being loyal to me.
=> When I fly WN, I get more nonstop flights than on any other carrier.

Whatever you think.... They need to do what they can to make $ so if that isn't being loyal to you, better cash in your miles before they go under...

Quoting SATX (Reply 18):

Actually, no, but nice dig.....I just get tired of people like you complaining about how bad this Airline and that Airline seat pitches suck, no food served sucks, etc. when you are flying for less than you would have been 30 years ago.... And as for seat pitch, I don't care what the on-line charts say: My knees are hitting on a WN seat just like every other domestic coach flight I have been on- and I have flown, non-reved or commuted on about every one!

And back to the thread: RJ-85 seats are comfortable and flying on the A/C is a nice experience...

mtnman

BTW-And I'm not condoning rude Airline employees- all Airline's have them and they make it bad for all of us...

Thanks for the tips guys. I took the upgrade. I've flown every NW aircraft except the 10's and 747's (NW A330 is a great A/C) till this point. I actually considered taking a different flight to get mainline (DL 737.)

Y might be OK on this A/C but again, I have a miles surplus and for quite a few reasons (one-way flight, I usually fly short distances, and with g/f) I may as well use them.

As for the NW bashing - those of us in small areas of the upper Midwest don't have much choice. CWA is my airport and UA (ORD connection ACKKK!!!) and YX (always expensive) are my only other choices. I believe NW may have as many flights in/out of CWA as these two combined, maybe more (I know somebody will post the stats on this). NW isn't bad; isn't great, IMHO.

Some of my concern about the value was it being an XJ operated flight. Either XJ is fantastic (on time, courteous, etc...) or your worst nightmare (overweight SAAB, rude overworked F/A, overbooked, (seems the SAABS almost ALWAYS have a mechanical on departure from a hub)) - there's never any gray area with Mesaba - love it or hate it.  Smile

There is one major reason I chose to be loyal to NW here at OKC.....the Avro RJ-85. They fly almost exclusively avro's here, and its awesome. If I were you, I would save your upgrade for a leg on a DC9 or A32X. The coach class in the Avro is so nice, I don't think it would be worth upgrading. Save your upgrade for a time when you can escape a seat in the back of a DC9.

Oooooooo!!! You are so gonna LOVE the Avro!! I flew in FC one time as an offline non-rev in 1999. It was AWESOME! My ex-gf was so jealous that she had to sit in coach while I took the very last seat that turned out to be FC. Too bad I didnt get the tail number. I just love those foot rests in front of the seat!

I also love the Avro. I've only flown the avro with LH but coach was very spacious.

Coach is great, but I can't comment on first. According to seatguru:

"Many flyers really like this plane as all classes feature very generous seat pitch and width."

I've only flown the Avro once (MEM-PNS) and was pleasantly surprised to see how nice the seats were in coach. Being a person of larger than average size, that extra couple of inches of seat width are a nice bonus, and the pitch is nothing to complain about. Now the CRJ, that's a whole different story!
