Montserrat New Airport Will Finally Open In July

Sat Apr 23, 2005 6:07 pm

Ten years after a volcano eruption destroyed the airport of the Caribbean island of Montserrat, a new airport will open on July 11th.
The runway will be 600mtrs. long.
The island with the airport code MNI can then be reached by 4 daily Winair (WM) Twin-Otter flights out of Antigua.

Since the island could only be reached by helicopter service and boat, the tourism industry was down and turned Montserrat into one of the poorest islands of the Caribbean.
I wish Montserrat a lot of success with the new airport.
And maybe this also helps their soccer team to leave rank 202 (from 205)  bigthumbsup .

Cute. And probably the smallest airport in world with road tunnel under the runway! Didn't the old airport get LIAT Dash8s?

I see CONVIASA's Dash7 landing in there...

Edit:
Nevermind, for a moment I thought Montserrat was independent, so it would be a valious vote for Chavez in the OAS. Now I see it is an overseas dept of the UK

Why ? Is the Governor from Montserrat a good friend from Hugo Chavez ?  spin

True, in the past LIAT was also flying to MNI. And I am a bit surprised that Winair will now be serving Montserrat from ANU because this is LIAT territory. WM is at home in SXM.
