BOS/JFK/EWR/PHL To Bermuda

Mon Apr 25, 2005 7:57 am

To which of these cities is the O&D market to Bermuda the best?

I know BOS, EWR, and PHL each have 2 daily round-trips:
BOS: 1 on DL B738, 1 on US A319
JFK: ??? (AA I beleive flies this)
EWR: 2 on CO B73G
PHL: 2 on US (a/c varies)

I know that US PHL-BDA is their shortest 767 flight and they are the only wide-body from the USA to Bermuda, but some of that may be connecting traffic, so I am not so sure if PHL is REALLY the best O&D market for Bermuda.

ALSO....why are the fares so damn expensive? !!! ($600+ always)

It is interesting, but I beleive Bermuda is actually closest to BOS!

New York City is the largest O&D market from Bermuda, no doubt.

AA flies JFK-BDA twice daily, and one flight is a with a 767-200.

It is a high yielding market.

According to the Great Circle Mapper, JFK is actually the closest of these cities.

JFK-BDA: 762 mi
BOS-BDA: 772 mi
EWR-BDA: 779 mi
PHL-BDA: 785 mi

For one, Bermuda is a country with a very high cost of living. I've gone there several times on vacation and I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, the number of flights there are generally restricted by the government so the island does not become overrun with tourists. Usually if you're visiting there it is best to get a vacation package deal.

The flights to Bermuda from Canada can usually be found at a good price. I've been able to get tickets, generally, for under 500$... and thats Canadian currency. Although at some peak seasons those good prices are scarce.

Fares to Bermuda are high due to the relative few flights in and out on a daily basis.

This may change somewhat with the entrance of JetBlue in May; although what I have found with JetBlue is that they open with low fares, but their fares can be as high as anyone else's on those routes; all they have to do is charge the going rate - $30 to $40 and their planes are jammed. Since they only send one plane, it really doesnt affect the market that much.

In addition, those that go to Bermuda have the money to afford it. Bermuda is a beautiful place, but it is not cheap. This is part of the reason that relatively few people go to Bermuda...few can afford it; hence the high fares.

BAW-Have I gone completely mad? I haven't heard a thing about jetBlue starting service to Bermuda.

BTW, during the summer, US Airways also flies daily LaGuardia-Bermuda.

Don't forget all the other flights!

Air Canada (Halifax, Toronto)
American Airlines (Miami, New York JFK)
British Airways (London Gatwick)
Continental Airlines (Newark)
Delta Air Lines (Atlanta, Boston)
Northwest Airlines (Detroit)
US Airways (Boston, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, New York LaGuardia, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington National)
USA 3000 (Baltimore/Washington, Newark)

United Airlines (seasonal service to Chicago O'Hare -- did this disappear?)

B6 to BDA!? I'd love to see that. Maybe a BOS-BDA run.

Something tells me this post is going to heat up stirthepot
Don't put me on A7! I got out of the airport, so why send me back?

I know that US PHL-BDA is their shortest 767 flight

PHL-CLT, PIT-PHL, CLT-PIT, CLT-MCO all operate regularly and are all shorter. As an aside, expect to see the 767 flying one of the CLT-LAS trips this summer.

US Airways (Boston, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, New York LaGuardia, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington National)

US did not resume its FLL-BDA service (nor its BWI-BDA service) this summer. US will offer 43 weekly departures to BDA from 6 U.S. gateways this summer.

Will there be many 762's available for domestic service in the summer with PHL-Venice and Barcelona starting?

No. US has 10 of them, and will be flying PHL-AMS/MUC/FRA/DUB/SNN/GLA/BCN/VCE with 8 of them. One spare will fly PHL-CLT-LAS-CLT-CUN-CLT-PHL (with the LAS-CLT a redeye), and the other spare will fly PHL-BDA-PHL. The A330 spare will fly PHL-SJU-PHL, as always.

I am also shocked to find that there is no service from BDA to ORD (or MDW)!

I am surprised that neither AA or UA do this! I guess most of the CHI-BDA traffic goes through PHL?

United Airlines operated ORD-BDA last year. The route performed miserably. Bermuda also acts as an "east coast" destination, and, more specificlly, a Northeastern's destination. The biggest gap in Bermuda's route network had always been Miami, though AA fixed that this past March.

I believe BDA is mostly popular with the East Coast. Few from the Midwest or points west think of BDA. That's why NW is only doing BDA from DTW on weekends only for the season.

Horrendous. Since the flight was subsidized by the Bermudan government, its losses were well publicized in Bermudan media.

If that is true, why did the government subsidize UA with BDA-ORD?

By the way...what kind of equipment did UA use, 737-500, 727, BAE146? What were loads like 20%???!!!

It is not true. The government strongly encourages new air links, and subsidizes most of them.

BAe146? Are you kidding? It was an A320 on Saturdays. Loads were horrendous, I heard high-40s.

When the fares are no less than $600 r/t...wouldn't that still be profitable? They could just downgrade the equipment too to improve those figures.

That would seem like the perfect smaller airplane...what's wrong? Doesn't it have the range (plus 4 engines)?

They had to dump the fares to fill seats.

Well, United doesn't fly any of them (their regional partners do), and it is a short-range regional jet.
