United Short On Long Haul A/C? New Haul Orders?

Mon Apr 25, 2005 12:55 pm

Seeing how United has axed a lot of their 744 and 777 fleet and there are increasing long haul routes is United starving for long haul a/c?

Thanks,

Matt

If they need aircraft for new flights, I'm pretty sure they have plenty widebodies out in the desert.

United has only gotten rid of seven T7s and a dozen or so 744s, hardly "a lot of their 777 and 747 fleet".

United still has 53 T7s, 31 744s and they still have 38 767s. I'll ignore the 757s because United keeps those mostly on domestic routes. I'm going to forgo playing armchair CEO and say if United needed those T7s and 744s, then they would have kept them. Obviously they didn't need them because they got rid of them.

I would expect some sort of announcement upon our emergence from Chapter 11 regarding new aircraft orders and expansion. It's expected that we'll have some nice announcements regarding both once all our ducks are in a row. There's buzzing on the jumpseats about it already though nothing confirmed.

The announcement will read as follows: "UAL asks bankruptcy judge for 6 MORE months.... again"

UA will probably order some B 747 Advanced, B 787s, B 777-200ERs, A 319-320s etc when they are ready to grow again.

But they must first install PTVs on every single seat, new first class suites, new business class flatbeds etc once they get out of chapter 11.

LOL, IF and IF they get out of chapter 11. I thought there was more chance of them going tits up as opposed to coming out of bankruptcy. Just my opinion.

Has United completely retired the 767-200? I thought they did but when I look at the current fleet in united.com, the 767-200 is still mentioned as an aircraft in the current fleet. Logically if the last 200 is already phased out, it should be classified in the past aircraft section. My understanding is that United still has one or two 200's.

They're all gone as of like a month ago. I should have specified 763s.

They just cancelled the last B777-222ER they had on order. For the first time in a long time UA have no airplanes on order with Boeing. Until they clear CH11 I think it'll be quite a while before we see a Long Haul order from UA.

I've heard some rumors that once they're out of bankruptcy they'll be looking at the 777-300 and 787. Again, just a rumor but it did come from UA employees. I hope it's true.

I hear, both from a family member in the company and a person close with the company that the pilots all hate the airbus'. Not trying to start an A vs. B but it seems that from the pilots and admin's at United that Airbus doesn't fit their needs. Now when I heard this I took two steps back seeing as United is one of Airbus' largest customers. I can't see them going with the 773 NON-ER. United has shown that what a/c they don't throw in the desert/sell that they will use until they drive them into the ground. I can see the non-er 772's going into all domestic service, if they haven't already, and new long haul a/c coming into the airline. Be it the 787 or 773, In my opinion United needs to think fast.

Thank you all for your responces,

Matt

I'd expect an annoucement upon UA's emergence of Ch11 that the company would look carefully at any opportunities to expand without incurring fleet additions. Also that the operation would be simplified by retiring a couple of equipment types. Also rolling out TED to all domestic flights except a few trunk routes. Also that cost reductions would be implemented in areas other than salaries/pensions. I would not expect an announcement that UA would go on a plane shopping trip and mindless expansion though. End of Ch11 at UA won't mean returning to business as it was, otherwise it will be back to the court.

I don't think TED will replace all UA's domestic services. I am sure most of UA's domestic services will remain full service. Afterall it is a full service airline.

They should first upgrade their B 747-400s with new first suites, new business class flatbeds as well as PTVs on every single seat.

I guess they will look at the B 787 and the B 747 Advanced. Maybe the B 777-200LR as well.
