World's 10 Best Airports 2005 - Results Out

Mon Apr 25, 2005 4:51 pm

The World's 10 Best Airports

Hong Kong International is # 1

Asia's airports dominate the rankings. Not a single US airport in the list.

Here's the report

Have to say that the Top 10 is no surprise at all. Most people would certainly put most of those airports at the top of their lists of airports that are enjoyable and hassle-free to fly from.

Really? I thought that KIX was a bit of a suprise to me. They were losing all that money til about 2 years ago. I guess they might become succesful after all if they can further strengthen their China routes.

Its a top 10 of passengers opinions - nothing to do with financial success or anything like that - otherwise you would indeed be right about KIX.

MSP first in N. America?! I would have to say there is probably much better choices. YVR and ATL in my 'passenger' opinion are much better than MSP. Don't get me wrong MSP is a nice airport, but I just don't believe it sits as #1 because it has a few Cinabuns or whatever makes the general public rate it highly.

I've been to 3 out of the top 10, and I would certainly agree with both SIN and MUC, SYD I haven't been to since 1998 so I can't comment on that really.

No-one could really argue with MUC, CPH and AMS being the best three airports in Europe either.

It's funny to see that MUC is in the Europe category and that LEJ is in the Eastern Europe category. I guess some "recent" political developments have not caught on yet...
And then I wonder if SXF was also considered "Eastern Europe"...

My thoughts exactly, not to mention that I would never say that LEJ is better than both PRG and DME. Ok, you have lots of space in LEJ, but that is only because of a lack of passengers. Their only real plus is the intermodal terminal.

No matter where they put SXF, I am not surprised to not find it amongst the top 10 airports...

Too bad I have just been at four out of the ten top airports, and it's nice to know what other people think about them. In my personal Top 10 Copenhagen would definitely be ranked better, well and Arlanda would be found on the list aswell.  Wink

I am not very surprised that HKG is #1. It is a phenomenal airport in every way, from design to services. Thoroughly enjoyed transiting there in '03.

I'm going to guess that the nightmare that is getting to and from SCL hurt it. While in the airport, though, I would agree that it is one of South America's, and perhaps the world's, best.

It's a shame that half of DTW sucks. The World Gateway alone surely belongs on the list.

MSP has some positives, but it is very spread out, particularly for making connections on NW. I would rate SFO, LAS, YYC, and SEA ahead of MSP.

I've never been to CVG, but people who have generally have nice things to say about it.

Very pleasing that Amsterdam is that high up on the list. I have never had an easier time through customs and immigration than in AMS, and the layout is very simple and clean.

I would have enjoyed seeing ORD on the list, as much as I know it has its problems, and the weather never helps - I just love those lights on the ceiling in the underground walkway! I like the rest of the airport too!

I am a little bit confused that Germany has the best European airport with Munich and at the same time the best one in eastern Europe with Leipzig.

Both airports are located next to the 12th degree longitude.

Or is the eastern part of Germany considered as eastern Europe? Maybe I have missed something and the GDR has been reastablished?

Not to necessarily defend my own airport here, because I am unsure of its number one position too, but that example you gave is kind of poor. B to G concourse is easy considering it is five minutes on moving sidewalks. I think you can get anywhere in that airport in ten minutes tops.

-TJ

Also, it might be interesting to see if MSP hangs up there in the next few years with the additional runway this fall and other concourse and terminal changes coming over the next few years.

I can feel a little nationalism coming up in me
but as far as I know, CPH was no. 1 a couple of years ago.. can anyone confirm that?
btw, I dont get why YVR is not on the top 3 over North American airports... I liked YVR a lot.. it is very modern.. I dont know if it is good if you want to connect to another flight though, because I didn't try that...

When was the last time you have been there? The new European security regulations have not made things easier. If you have a connecting flight to a Schengen country in the morning (and you are originating from a non Schengen country), transfering can be a real pain in the ass.

Nevertheless, I am also pleased to see AMS doing nice in the scores. Although it could get hard to stay high up as the airport gets larger and larger.

I find polls like this to be near complete and utter bullshit. Out of there 5.3 million or so people "polled" they do not take into account variance or standard deviation from their sample group. I also doubt they did any mean, median, or mode of the total number of airports and the total number of visits by each one of the 5.3 million that are represented or discussed in their poll results.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

GRU being listed in the top 3 makes the entire survey a joke.

and DXB? EK and DXB are two enterprises that the press love - they can do no wrong. i personally do not like connecting through DXB - it is the antithesis of a relaxing connection airport.

MSP best in North America? Not!!!!!!!

CVG #2 in North America? I can go with that.

SFO #3 in North America? I don't think so, SFO is now and always has been a dump.

What about DIA? ALT? Toronto? Many others in N.A.

I've been to eight of the ten on the list and would concur with them on the list. Great airports.

From the States and my view: MSP is a like a barn on steroids. Connections can need a commuter aircraft. And, if you're inbound in the evening with a non-food flight, forget about even finding a vending machine anywhere in the airport. The NWA club is nice, though.

I would automatically not list any American airport just for the inane security requirement for taking off shoes. I'm not a health nut, but I worry about how many fungus feet have tread on that floor before me. Then I feel I have to go clean my hands just from touching the dust that accumulates on my shoes. TSA: get over it.

While I agree that MSP is a great airport, I really think that Northwest's terminal in DTW is absolutely beautiful. I suppose since the other half of DTW is older that dragged down the airport as a whole, otherwise it certainly would have to have been up there on that list in my opinion. MSP has a great variety of restaurants and shops, the only drawback is how big and spread out it is. I always allow at least an hour between flights if I have connections through there. I do agree, though, that CVG is a great airport. You can't beat an airport that has an Outback Steakhouse in it!  Smile

The security is usually a nightmare, and it takes FOREVER sometimes to get to the gates via the train system- when it's not broken! .....And we won't even go into the flight delays if a bird so much as craps on one of the runways!!!!

I don't necessarily agree that MSP is the best in the US ( and I really don't have a favorite in the USA- Osaka-Kansai is mine), but I think it's definitely better than ATL>>>

Weather delays, imfamous NW crews not showing for flights, the terminal is a poor layout, there are zero eateries open late when you get those oh so glorious weather delays. What are they basing this list off? Exit poll from all Asian airports?  Smile

I honestly have nothing bad to say about it. It will only get better also with the new runway and a huge expansion of gates and eateries.

Although I've heard marvelous things about SCL and the terminal and wonder why is wasn't on the list, I would also like to ask when the last time you flew through LIM was. They just opened up the new modern-style terminal with jetways and all of the works you could find in SCL or any European airport. It's made a big change from how it was around five or so years ago when construction first started.

Five minutes on moving sidewalks if you're going at an all out sprint the whole way. And to top it off, you have to go through that stupid mall (excuse me, the Northstar Crossing) in the middle of the airport. Nothing is more frustrating than being late for a flight and having to dodge people staring into storefronts.

Excuse me??? Have any of you been to MSP in the past 5 years??? There is a concourse connector that conveniently connects the A and B concourse to the G concourse. This allows you to skip even going into the terminal.

I hope that next year NGO is on that list. It makes KIX look like boring.
I have been down there three times in the past month for work and each group I bring through says it is the best airport they have ever been to.

NGO has Internet ports everywhere, 60+ restaurants and stores divided into a western section and Japanese section designed in traditional fashion serving both international and local cuisine, spa overlooking the tarmac and bay, massage and beauty services, 24 hour medical and dental, easy transfer from domestic to international, gardens and art galleries, multiple lounges (Star alliance and JAL), wood flooring on the shopping floor, wood deck-like terrace and ground transit (train) is on the same level as check-in...Take that KIX.

This week NGO reported that since opening it has had close to 4 million visitors, most of whom were not flying anywhere but just visiting. At this rate 48 million visitors will go through the airport in 1 year. The goal is to be profitable in 5 years.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Quoting DAL767400ER (Reply 12):
My thoughts exactly, not to mention that I would never say that LEJ is better than both PRG and DME.

Quoting GodBless (Reply 15):
No matter where they put SXF, I am not surprised to not find it amongst the top 10 airports...

I do not know at all, why these airports (SXF, LEJ) are on this list ?! With 2-3 Mil. pax/year they aren't even regional airports on some other country's scale. The performance you need to deliver to satisfy 20 Mil., 50 Mil. or even far more passengers cannot be compared to such necessary to cope with that few.

Also small airports do have a lot of advantages as regards passenger convenience (quick check-in, cheap parking etc) that large airports cannot realize due to their urban (-->expensive) location and size ... SXF and LEJ as east German infrastructure is also highly subsidized ...

cheers,
Jan

MSP and SFO are on the list?!  crazy

I don't know what the hell these guys are smoking. Have you ever had to go from Concourse F to the very end of Concourse A to make a connection on Northwest at MSP?! There is no way you can make it in less than 25 minutes. The terminals aren't in the best shape at MSP, the "mall" is the same old garbage you'd find elsewhere, the food is the same as elsewhere.
America's chickens are coming home to rooooost!

Hmmmm, what a suprise - not a single UK airport in the running, probably because they're ALL crap from the actual infrastructures through to the staff that man them!

Take note BAA and other UK airport operators - and sharpen up your acts!  mad
