Air India Board Meeting 26 April

Tue Apr 26, 2005 8:47 am

Is the purpose of this board meeting to approve a new aircraft order and if so, when will it be announced? Anybody know?

Yes, I think so, and apparently it is another victory for Boeing with a 787/772LR/773ER order.

Oh they got the IA order. Do they think they are going to get everything?
Anyway, it's not for a lack of effort:

http://www.financialexpress.com/fe_full_story.php?content_id=88975

Intense lobbying is on by the two aircraft makers - Boeing and Airbus - to grab a bigger share of the aircraft orders from state carrier Air-India. After US transportation secretary Norman Mineta’s visit to India recently, it is the turn of visiting French minister for intrastructure, transport and tourism, Mr Gilles de Robien to hard-sell the next-generation Airbus aircraft to Air-India.

"Airbus is the best aircraft in the world and whatever model Indian Airlines or Air-India decide to go in for, it would be good for them. We hope both the carriers would go in for Airbus aircraft," the French minister told FE. "We are not putting any pressure on the Indian government because Airbus is known for its safety, quality and reliability. I hope these factors would tilt the deal in Airbus’ favour."

If Air India does in fact decide to award its order, worth several billion, to Boeing, this will have been quite a bad week for Airbus. Personally, I think that a 777/787 combo for Air India is the right choice for the same reason it was the right choice for Air Canada. It gaves AI the flexibility of rock-bottom operating costs and unparalleled range, two things that will definitely come in handy with a burgeoning Indian air travel market in the next 5-10 years.

This one is still up in the air (no pun intended)....though I was a little surprised by the big Boeing AC order, I wouldn't be surprised if AI for some reason goes for Airbus frames.......hmmm.........."four engines for long haul"...hahaha!!

I thought that Boeing basically had the order, and that the AI board just had to approve the decision which is more of a formality. I sometimes think wrong though!

Airbus should not threat IC.. While I prefer the short-haul airbusses over the 73NG (especially jkeeping in mind ICs present 320 fleet), this is no way of making business..

Edit2; Sorry, have to say: this is no way by the stupid GOI of harassing Airbus like this.. These lazy people should clear that thing, so we have peace now. Airbus is somehow right

Edit: Does anyone know what time the meeting will take place/be conclused? Will follow up the news according;y.

This Board meeting is only a formality to rubberstamp a decision already taken by that corrupt Prafull Patel.

Meanwhile in stark contrast to the spineless AI management, IC pilots and sections of the management have openly come out speaking out against Patels instructions to IC to lease 15 year old 767's instead of the A330's offered by Airbus.

What's the update on AI board meeting? Have they decided on the B777s and B787s?

I really hope that IC does not go in for leasing old B767s. A330 would be more suitable for them considering the fact that the cockpit layout is similar to that of an A320. It would take 2 weeks for a pilot to convert from an A320 to an A330.

Any links. Also what is the process after this board approval. There must more committees and evaluations to go through before the final contract is signed? Where are they (AI) know in terms of the process and how much longer (in years please) will it take until we actually see an airplane in AI colors?

WSJ 04/26/05:

"India's state-owned carrier, Air India, said it will buy 50 new planes valued at $6 billion from Boeing Co., giving the U.S. plane maker fresh momentum in its duel with European rival Airbus.

The Air India deal comes on the heels of Boeing's deal Monday with Air Canada, a longtime Airbus customer that said it plans to build its future long-haul fleet around Boeing's newest crop of airplanes...

The two deals may signal a momentum shift in the global airplane war, which was dominated for decades by Boeing before Airbus took the lead in both orders and deliveries in the past several years...

...Boeing last year lost a string of orders to Airbus, which had pushed its newer product line and exploited Boeing's unwillingness to cut prices."

In December, Boeing replaced its top airplane salesman and committed to more aggressive marketing and pricing. At the same time, Boeing is benefiting from the traction that the 787 Dreamliner is gaining among airline officials who say they are enticed by technology and efficiency not offered by Airbus."

Looks to me that Airbus will be flying their A380 in a very depressive way.

Anybody thinks that Airbus will arrange a huge party tomorrow after the A380 makes its first sucessful flight?

I'll tell ya, they have to go out there and sell some airplanes.

The size of this order is amazing; AI is basically replacing their whole fleet with this one order! AI currently have about 40 aicraft and with firm orders for 40 aircraft the whole fleet will be replaced.
