SAN Gates 1 And 2

Tue Apr 26, 2005 12:32 pm

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone had any info on the conversion of gates 1 and 2 at SAN (status, how they [will] relate to the rest of the terminal as far as access/security is concerned, etc.

Also curious if WN's additional SAN flights (total of 3 IIRC) have anything to do with this 'conversion' or if they're cramming them into the current gates that they have.

Thanks -- As always

No new flights. Just the SMF and OAK shuttle. The buidling was damaged in a mild earthquake a few months back so it was good timing for a modification. I did the TAAMS ramp layout work for Parsons on this project. Seperate checkpoint and baggage claim from the rest of the gates and claim areas.

Thanks for the reply, Boeing7E7... Have a friend who swears that there were 3 additional flights, but...

One question, if you don't mind my asking what is "TAAMS ramp layout work?"

Do you happen to know if WN is going to grab (keep?) these gates or if someone else's name is on them (it seems kind of wierd to me that if WN is getting them there isn't some way to connect them to WN's other gates behind security for connecting pax (hey, it could happen, right?).

Oh, how I long for the days when you could get past security without being a pax so I could check progress in person...

Thanks again,

Lincoln

I heard that Gates 1 & 2 will reopen on April 30th and that the SMF and OAK flights will return to them. Which is great for me as I do the SAN->SMF run every week and once again get to bypass the normal security line to the rest of the WN gates. I'm not crazy about the new jetways though - I thought that being able to use the stairs in the front and back was so much more efficient. Those in the know, knew to head for the back of the plane for the return flights as one could get off very quickly. So much for progress.

I'm transfering to SAN in two weeks so I might be able to offer a little insight on the situation there. I heard about the construction and I have wondered what exactly is going on there. I did hear that WN is opening a provisioning department in SAN within the next year. I wondered if that area was being converted to a provo facility...if not, anyone know where this will be located if in fact it is true they are getting provisioning? I guess if it's not answered here soon, I will soon find out for myself eh? haha...

Hey, welcome to SAN, Silver1SWA... I'd offer to welcome you in person but I'll be mobing out of the area about the same time you'll be moving in.

I can pretty much gaurntee from the minutes of the board that Gates 1 & 2 are not being turned into provo... unless provo facilities usually have jetways (do they? It wouldn't make sense to me, but anything is possible...).

My guess knowing next to nothing about the airport and the needs of such a facility (space, proximity to gates, etc) would be that it would probably be somewhere on the cargo ramp near the area that was suposed to get the "Southwest Airlines Terminal" -- by the way what has happened to that? Shouldn't it have been open by now?

It's a Boeing Airport Modeling Product which identifies passenger and aircraft flow problems in terminals and on ramps. It's use is only taught at Embry-Riddle where it was developed and Boeing. The program is a CAD system with a simulator. Very expensive.

No, as far as I know jetways do not go with provo facilities. I was not aware that the construction had something to do with jetways. It has been a few months since I have been to the airport so I haven't seen the progress. I'm hoping to make it down there and check out WN's operation before I make the transfer so I have an idea what it's like before I get there. Would have done it today, but I have too much to do in preparation for the move.

They added two ground load jetways. They are at ground level and rise and pivot to the aircraft door. SWA isn't paying for the project, the airport is so it has nothing to do with provisioning. It should open in the next week or so.

Ahh... Thanks for the info. For some reason I was thinking that they'd add a 2nd level and then attach the jetways there (ala the original jetway addition, from what I understand). Do you know: How steep a rise is it / what aircraft types besides the 737 can be accomidated?

Cleveland, of all places. I think I'm going to miss San Diego  Smile
