SAS previously had plans to start services to MIA
sometime in late 2001 but then 9/11 came.
I'm very surprised to hear MLB had services from almost all of the US majors back then because right now that airport is dead. Don't see why so many carriers back then vs now. I would think the Melbourne area has been growing.. rather than losing residents. A few years ago there was a new airline that was going to start based in MLB. They were going to fly DC-9s. It was on the airport's website, but I guess plans were abandoned.
Some years ago while driving around that area on I-95, I saw a USAir MD80 on approach, most likely to MLB so I'm guessing USAir used to fly there. On one occation I decided to actually go see this airport and when I got there all I saw on the terminal was a Spirit MD
To get to the space coast, Cocoa Beach, the cruises etc it's only a 45 minute drive from MCO
, which has more attractiions and options than Melbourne. However from Melbourne to the theme parks it's a pretty long drive, around 2 hours.. and now with SFB
being a favorite charter airport I think it will be hard for MLB to lure any intl airlines.
Back on topic, let's hope Sterling retains that colorful scheme for the 767s
