A380 Fills 4 Most Popular A.net Photos!

Wed Apr 27, 2005 10:23 pm

Can't remember the last time one single aeroplane managed to fill all 4 sports reserved for the most popular pictures of the day on airliners.net!

http://www.airliners.net/search/index.main

Guess she will be on all newspaper covers by tomorrow too!

Well, if you go and look at the most popular pictures of all time, they're all 747s.

The 747 has been around somewhat more than the 1 day that the A380 has been though  Wink

It's like that. I believe that the A380 is mostly an "engineer masterpiece" rather than a beauty of a plane....

Sam Chui described the A380 take off as "the biggest aviation news in the decade, if not this century!" in his photos of the event. Maybe he'll be right (although the century has a fair bit to go yet). The event of the 20th century was probably Concorde at the time, but in retrospect the 747 turned out to be a more important milestone. I get the feeling that the 787 won't be different enough to generate similar media interest on its maiden flight - although no doubt a.net will be buzzing when it happens.  Wink

McDonnell Douglas and Boeing were both looking at full-length double deckers while Airbus was still masturbating. I personally don't see it as a big deal.

The Concorde to me was an engineering masterpiece...

What a very negative comment (given the context of this thread). Do I detect some jealousy here?

Of course the 747 has had more views than the A380 - it's been around a few decades more!

How long do they normally look at it in the US before they start doing something?

Because it's the biggest milestone in Aviation history. And it will probably always stay like that as well.. Be honoust, the 787 is just a new version of the 767, I know they use plastic, but that has the 380 as well...

What a wonderfull day!! Thanks Airbus!

It's only because there are no more than four pictures available.

Had there been 25 pics, then they would have been the 25 most popular pics.

Try again bro. Yes I may love Boeing, but I have great appreciation of Airbus aircraft too...

I continue to find it odd that people cannot appreciate both manufacturers. I may prefer Boeing, but I love them both. Without Boeing, there wouldn't be Airbus and without Airbus, there wouldn't be many of the technological advances, and there wouldn't be a need for Boeing to improve. I understand we all have preferences, lord knows I do in many areas of my life, but does that mean we have to hate or get our arms in a twist everytime someone says something supportive or unsupportive about one of the manufactures.

Personally, I think the A330-200 (GE Engines of course) is one of the most beautiful planes in the sky right now Smile I'm still trying to get on one.

Also, w/o Airbus (its predecessors) we wouldn't have one of the all-time most beautiful planes - the Concorde.

All in good fun guys!

This is nowhere near the biggest milestone in aviation history. It is a milestone for sure, but the biggest? Hardly. I believe that title will be forever held by Orville and Wilbur.  Wink

All the A380 is is a bigger plane. I'm happy to see it fly, but it doesn't mean THAT MUCH for aviation in general. If anything, it's the biggest milestone in Airbus history, but that's it.

Anything that redefines the boundaries can be considered a milestone, as for whether its the biggest or not, it depends on where you're looking from - airline, civil, military, analyst - and what that milestone has done for you in your specific area of the industry. The A380 is certainly up there with the best of them, after 707, 747 and Concorde. Depends on your criteria. If you look at the A380 design in terms of its 5,000psi system, material usage (glare), onboard data and monitoring systems and so on, each one is taking the civil industry to new heights.

I concur and agree wholeheartedly. NO one will come out with a plane that will overshadow the originals. Just because it didn't' happen in our lifetime, doesn't mean it isn't significant.

It means a lot for EUROPE. To me, and the rest of the world, it's an impressive display of human thought, design and ingenuity. (No matter how you look at it, there IS some ingenuity built into this airplane).

This airplane meant a lot to Europe, and for that, I applaud todays success.

Now, having said that, I would NEVER take away from any other country's manufacturer. I think that Embraer, Bombardier and Boeing among others, are all fine manufacturers with fine aircraft.

This was a big moment for Europe.

Easy there, mate. I was just pointing out a fact, a mere coincidence. It never crossed my mind to troll or anything of the sort. I'm just as happy about the A380 as most people on this site, and proud of being european, for sure.

Ah yes the most popular but certainly not the biggest milestone in aviation history. That remains the domain of the Shuttle - half plane, half aircraft.

I certainly perceive it as the worst economic blunder in aviation history. Presumably thats were most of my 2 cents of taxes went to by the grace of the lousy EU politicians.

I am certainly not a pessimist but I cannot agree with Airbus view that there is a market for the A380 of 300 plus. The project is overbudget by US$2 billion and the cost of manufacturing an A380 in years to come will be higher. This coupled with the fact that the original contracts were signed (surely) at below cost market prices means that thee break even point must be higher than 250 aircraft.

On the other hand, as a lover of aviation, its been great to see the A380 fly. I never doubted it would not do so.

Well yeah and while airbus was still doing what you said. Boeing and MD threw away that idea because they couldnt cope with the problems provided by this project. What is your post in this thread for anyway. If you dont like seeing this beauty fly. Go to Everett im sure they are not watching Telly today. Wondering why you get news of europe in america nowadays... normally you dont care bout the rest of the world in your news as i experienced...

There is one problem with airbus. Though their products are engineering marvels they lack passion, completely.

If someone is going to point to the 747 as being a milestone, then the A380 certainly is one also. Can't say 'yes' to the 747 and 'no' to the A380. I see milestones as a platform unlike anything that previously existed. The 747 was a milestone because it represented the first wide-body jumbo jet. The A380 is one because it is the first (and probably the only) double-decker aircraft. How you define 'milestone' is key. One could easily say the Wright Brothers' aircraft was a milestone and everything else that followed wasn't. I'm of the opinion that when a major design element comes along, it is a milestone. That begs the question: What is 'major?' To me, the A380 represents a major departure from what has existed until now.

You show me a person that says a double-decker aircraft is NOT major and I'll show you a person who either works for Boeing or thinks the Company is God's gift to aviation.

last time i looked the 747 flew over 30 years ago, last time i looked it had a double deck too! albeit a shorter one but a double deck none the less, you still need to climb a set of stairs to get up to the top deck, the 747 is the landmark concept for which the Airbus group has merely enhanced!

nice to see it fly, but it looks like a huge sore thumb!

What is/are your favourite(s) so far?
