A380 Premium Cabins?

Thu Apr 28, 2005 9:33 pm

I assume I am not alone in wondering what extra features the A380 will offer its passengers? With a plane of such size, the opportunities for extra facilities are at the least. Extensive. Some may be aware of the Nurseries, Duty- Free Shops, etc, that will be available to all passengers, but what are the airlines going to offer in the C, F classes? I have caught a glimpse of the First Class lounge that locates itself at the top of the front staircase, but prudent thinking leads me to believe this is purely provisional.  Wink

Are the airlines keeping their interior plans tucked away from other key market players until they first commercially fly the A380? Surely if an airline has thought of something innovative to offer the Premium flyers, they wouldn't risk others getting wind of it?

Does anyone have any idea what the Airlines are proposing to offer their Premium Passengers?

More to the point, will the airlines install luxurious although non- revenue making goodies such as onboard lounges and bars (like Virgin has) or will they simply cram (although tastefully) in as many Premium seats as possible? With most airlines implementing flat/ angled beds in their First and Business Cabins, what will be the unique selling points of the airlines that have ordered the A380?

Any ideas?

I know SQ are launching a new F/J/Y for the A380, although I suspect you won't see anything drastically new for any other airlines. Nothing groundbreaking. I don't think airlines will cram as many premium seats in as possible as it ruins exclusivity and ambience that premium cabins strive for. However, this is a VS trademark so I guess this will come as standard!  Wink I also I suspect Virgin will probably keep the onboard bars although I wouldn't bother packing swim shorts in your carry on if that is what you are expecting!

I think that Emirates' long-haul A380 fleet will be packed with ammenities - new, improved and conventional - in its premium classes, but the economy cabin will pay the penalty for it as they usually do - extra seats.

Of historical note: In the hayday of trans-Atlantic luxury steamers (1905-1950), first class rarely ever made money. Second class made a small margin. Third class and steerage is where they made money from moving passengers. As is in most of transportation economics, you make money wherever you can cram as much revenue units into each cubic foot of space as possible. It's not up to the builders of the 380; it's all up to the battle between the accountants and marketing departments at the airlines. In Virgin's case, you have one of the few marketing minded hands-on CEOs still calling the shots (like there were with the airline CEOs of the 50s through the 70s). Most of the others are hands on accounting/finance types.

My guess is that we will see nicely frilled up F/J/Y classes with new seats that continue to evolve, but not much else.
