May 3: Big Day For B6

Fri Apr 29, 2005 2:19 am

May 3rd is a busy day for the folks at JetBlue:

• JetBlue celebrates the opening of the new 11 gate terminal at BOS. Ribbon cutting ceremony at 0930 in Terminal C

• Press conference at McCarran International Airport to commemorate the new LAS-BOS service, as well as to celebrate B6's new home at Gate D-16

• Press conference at Mineta San Jose International Airport to commemorate the new SJC-BOS service

• JetBlue also begins IAD-SAN

May will also be a great month for JetBlue as we welcome our 30th and 31st destinations, PDX and BUR which start May 17 and May 24th respectively.

I am a little confused.....how is Terminal C new? Did they close it and renovate it or something? Also, does this mean that all 11 gates are now for JetBlue? I didn't realize they had that large of an operation at BOS already?

Well Terminal C isn't new, but to us it's new. And yes, we are renovating .. we're investing $9 million worth.

Here's from the press release:

http://www.jetblue.com/learnmore/pressDetail.asp?newsId=297

"New York, NY (February 2, 2005) -- JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU) today announced it has reached an agreement to lease the long-term use of the 11-gate Terminal C, Pier C facility at Boston's Logan International Airport subject to Massport Board approval and execution of definitive documentation.

Beginning this May, the carrier expects to occupy five gates in Terminal C as well as 14 ticket counter positions. Starting in 2006, JetBlue will continue its growth in Terminal C by adding one gate every six months over the next three years. The carrier currently occupies two gates at Logan's Terminal E.

Similar to the carrier's successful Terminal 6 project at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, JetBlue will invest over $9 million improving its new Terminal C location in Boston with facilities and concessions its customers have come to expect.

With JetBlue's current schedule, plus a recently announced west coast expansion, the carrier offers 19 daily flights from Boston with nonstop service to Oakland, Long Beach, CA; Denver, CO; Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando, FL. The carrier recently announced plans to add new daily nonstop service from Boston to Las Vegas, NV and San Jose, CA effective May 3."

I think he meant 'new for jetBlue'... I'm sure the terminal is being somewhat modified or slightly renovated - perhaps changing of signage, carpeting, and fixtures. I believe we're immediately taking over three or four gates in TC with an additional gate being taken over something like one gate every six months... I believe BOS is going to be an operation very similar to that outta JFK or us...

The B6 manager in MSY says B6 will start two daily 190 flights between BOS and MSY once the 190's come online. I will be looking forward to that to say the least.

a question, are B6 pilots already training for the E-190?

Well, Neeleman has said hes interested in MHT-JFK, and some local newspapers had reported not to long ago that the MHT airport director had been in talks with B6.

the only problem i see is that theres no free gates at MHT unless they can share one with another airline.

Apparently B6FA4ever, it's a west coast city. I've had Planning Dept. people on my flights lately to OAK, a lot. Something tells me it's going to be RNO, but that's just my guess.

Also, whatever happened to the rumor floating around on here about Ponce, PR?

You forgot to mention the potential Song impact. I believe Song starts its frequent (7x daily) JFK to LAX, plus a host of flights JFK to SFO. Will be interesting to see what happens between Jet Blue and Song, in addition to AA and UA on the transcons.

I like B6 as much as the next guy, but getting from OAK to SF is a hassle. Perhaps the Song service will affect UA, AA, and CO more. Will be interesting to see.

I believe that May 3rd is when B6 switches to their "summer" schedule...aka no extra segment flights. This allows for new destinations (since as more A320s come in, they can fill the extra sections in November.) and more frequencies where needed.

• Press conference at Mineta San Jose International Airport to commemorate the new SJC-BOS service

• JetBlue also begins IAD-SAN

The big question: What will Neeleman do. He can't do BOTH LAS-BOS and SJC-BOS let alone IAD-SAN!

Why would you let the CAT out of the bag? By announcing new routes and destinations prior to start up gives other airlines the chance to ramp up service before you do.

On the topic of Song's ramp up starting on Sunday, I heard that JFK-LAX will actually be cut down to 5x. Same thing with SFO. Winter frequencies on transcons are supposed to be even lower. In the winter, JFK-FLL is supposed to pick up 2 more flights (to 7x) along with some other NE-FL routes. (This is according to Neeleman and my visit to flysong.com)

As far as the new flights, I'm sure they'll all be successful. When looking at the sale fares, it looks as if BOS-LAS/SJC isn't selling too great as fares start at $89 and $99 respectively. However, IAD-SAN is selling at $119 which probably means that bookings are looking good. JFK-PDX is also selling at $119 and - to my surprise - BUR at $139! It looks as if Burbank is going to be a big money-maker for JetBlue.

If RNO is the new west coast city, I wouldn't be surprised. It would be a great market for them. Does CO serve RNO from EWR (non-stop)?

United will actually soon have 4 daily flights on SAN-IAD. They are adding an early-morning flight to compete with jetBlue.

Supposedly SAN-IAD has always been a good route for United due to defense traffic. I don't know if B6 and DH have chosen SAN-IAD for this reason as well, but for the time being, the route will see a huge increase in flights. Suffice to say that the increased competition will hurt each airline in the coming months.

Personally, I don't understand why B6 hasn't started BOS-SAN. Given the way AA is reacting to LCC expansion into transcon markets, jetBlue could probably have the route all to themselves within a few months of starting it.

Does anyone have any pics of the B6 terminal in JFK. I want to see what our new BOS terminal will look like.

Go to jetblue.com, click on "learn more" and then click on "online annual report." Once there, click on the 2003 statement and then click on "about us." Under the "customer compliments/comments" area there are several pictures of the inside of JetBlue terminal at JFK.

I'm not sure if the inside minal will be the same as the one at JFK, but I'm sure there'll be some similarities. For what it's worth, T6 at JFK has marble floors in the ticketing hall and then blue carpeting in the main terminal. There are also two children play areas, plasma tv's sporting the LiveTV channels, and grey-leather seats (which just replaced those old blue ones). The baggage claim area was just very recently redone -- the office is brand new, spacious and modern. The conveyer belts are another story.

I bet the BOS terminal will have those things, but probably not those huge windows that the terminal at JFK is known for having in the "mickey ears" (gates 1-6 and 12-17).

Hope this helps!

RNO is closer to Tahoe area than SMF. looking at my map...looks like its approx ish30-40 miles or so south. while SMF area is about 60 milest west of Tahoe.

jetBlue vs. Song to LA is a real marketing battle now. Here in NY, B6 is pushing the fact that they have the most flights to the LA area and that BUR, ONT and LGB are the most convenient airports to use. DL is doing ads touting the fact that they actually fly to LAX while their competitors do not. Should get interesting.

" T6 at JFK has marble floors in the ticketing hall and then blue carpeting in the main terminal. There are also two children play areas, plasma tv's sporting the LiveTV channels, and grey-leather seats (which just replaced those old blue ones)"

T6 is a crazy goat rodeo of a terminal. I can't imagine it gives a great impression when you have to start/end your trip through that cluster. There are just way too many people using an ancient terminal with minimal seating, low ceilings, and not much in the way of noise reduction. And all the windows are blocked by jetways and B6 aircraft!!

I like it but it could be updated but we have no where to go until T5 is done which isn't for a while.

When's the last time you went through T6, MaverickMD11? I was just there Sunday and it has come a long way, especially in the last few months. It's now more modern because of the new seats, and there is now more seating available as there is a new sitting area next to gate 7 and in the hallways that lead to each "ear." Also, the new plasma tv's are great. The baggage claim area still isn't anything to brag about, but it also has seen some major renovations with a new baggage claim office that just opened a couple of weeks ago.

I do agree with you, however, about the fact that the ceilings in the boarding terminal are low. And yes, the windows are always blocked by planes. But then again, this is an AIRPORT that we're talking about lol. The ceiling in the ticketing hall is very high and the whole building is practically made completely of glass.

It was interesting to see nearly 100 check-in kiosks in the ticketing hall and only a small area for those wanting to use an agent for the whole check-in process. I guess JetBlue is really pushing its efficiency.

"JFK-BOS will probably be first"

Only if they want to intentionally lose money...

They have already announced that JFK-BOS will be one of the first 190 routes and tickets will be $100, under cutting the shuttles

Quoting FLAIRPORT (Reply 26):
The big question: What will Neeleman do. He can't do BOTH LAS-BOS and SJC-BOS let alone IAD-SAN!

Sure they can. Why not? There is a lack of competition on both routes, especially with AA pulling SJC-BOS

Quoting B6FA4ever (Reply 42):
i thought AA was the airline that was advertising that they fly to LAX. i think the title of the thread was "AA ads takes jab at B6" or something like that.

The ads say "we know Long Beach is not Los Angeles"

N1120A - I think he is referring to the tradition of Neeleman flying on B6's new routes the day they start. On that note I think he could fly BOS-SJC, then catch a flight to LAS and take the red eye back to BOS, just a thought.
