SWF Applies For Grant; Hopes For JetBlue

Fri Apr 29, 2005 9:38 am

As many may know, it is time for small communities nationwide to submit Small Comunity Air Service Development grants. Roughly $12M or so is awarded each year by DOT to help small communities improve air service. One application that is sure to get a lot of attention is that by Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, NY.

They have applied for a grant for $250,000 for marketing in a move that they hope will help lure them jetBlue service. They mention the ideal service as being five daily flights - one to Tampa and two each to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

Proposal:

I never thought of it, but JetBlue SWF-FL service would be a big hit. Currently, people either have to drive all the way to LGA or sometimes ALB to get a non-stop flight, or sometimes fly from SWF and connect in PHL or IAD.

I bet JetBlue would do excellently on the proposed routes with the E190's and perhaps the 320 in the winter. This wouldn't effect their JFK service by any means and have a very small effect if any of their LGA-FLL flights. No Southwest factor either.

Hope this happens!

Sounds like a great idea. They will get more people to fly them from that area so they can have a stronger hold on the NYC metro then they already do. Sounds like a great idea but FLL is maxed out and I don't think they will remove a JFK flight to squeeze in an SWF flight. Probably TPA and MCO and maybe MIA if they pick to go to MIA or maybe they can start PBI or RSW.

FLL is not so maxed out that they won't squeeze in this flight. The Lauderdale flights are by far the most important one of these - it is a key business and leisure market from Newburgh with significantly more O&D from NYC than either Tampa or Orlando.
