Fog In Tegucigalpa

Sat Apr 30, 2005 3:26 pm

im browsing the copa website and they are reporting that they are stoping their flights to tegucigalpa due to fog, anyone know anything more bout this, wich other airlines have stoped services also?
heres the news from copa
Due to intense fog that has covered the city of Tegucigalpa for several days, reducing visibility in the airport to levels below the minimum permitted, Copa Airlines has temporarily rescheduled its flights to the city of San Pedro Sula. Flights to Tegucigalpa will resume as soon as the airport authorities confirm that the airport meets the security requirements for operation.

Currently, the airport weather shows smoke, not fog. Perhaps the locals are burning brush or there is a forest fire.

The weather indeed is haze/smoke from seasonal crop burning in the area.

Airports in Honduras regularly close during this season due to fog/smoke.

The visibility goes below the minimum for the lowest approach and they simply close it. La Ceiba is also affected by closures, thus preventing most of the domestic airlines to do their regular flights.

San Pedro Sula, however, has an ILS approach, and usually doesn't have to close.

As for the smoke, they can thank the local farmers burning forests all over the country, turning it into a desert. It is really starting to show! Very soon inhabitants of Tegucigalpa will start having trouble getting some water.

It's a shame, really.

For how long the honduran authorities are going to keep Toncontín Airport open for international commercial airtraffic?
Every year they've the same Fog/Smoke problems in that daylight-operations-only TGU airport. Not until the airlines flying to TGU demmand Honduras to allow Palmerola Airport to become Tegucigalpa airport this visibility situation will be fixed if not at least improved.
Does Tegucigalpa need to build another airport with brandnew runway when Palmerola is somewhat nearby? I don't think so.
Does Honduras need that Tegucigalpa - Palmerola Airport (maybe up to San Pedro Sula) highway to be a 4 lane highway? YES!

Quoting Snaiks (Thread starter):
Copa Airlines has temporarily rescheduled its flights to the city of San Pedro Sula.

San Pedro Sula is at least 4 hours from TGU on a 2 lane road. CM flew to SAP and left, now to return to TGU and find out the problems - they knew - TGU airport has. It's time they consider PTY-SJO-TGU-SAP-SJO-PTY.
I don't work for COPA Airlines!
