QR, RJ And IY Add New Destination: Alexandria!

Sun May 01, 2005 12:07 am

Qatar Airways announced today new flights to their next destination, Alexandria. The airline already flies to Cairo and Luxor.

Flights start on the June 9th 2005 with 3x weekly A320 flights (QR512/513).

QR512 DOH/ALY -2----- 11:45/15:15 and ----4--7 13:00/16:30
QR513 ALY/DOH -2----- 16:15/19:40 and ----4--7 17:30/20:55

QR is the FIFTH airline so many weeks to announce new flights to Alexandria following Austrian Airline, Gulf Air, Oman Air and Emirates.

In addition the following airlines have increased or will increase Alexandria services:
-Olympic Airways: doubled flights from 2 to 4x weekly (ATH-ALY-ATH) this summer.
-Lufthansa: upgrading some FRA-ALY flights from A319 to A320 over the summer.
-Air Arabia: Added a second daily flight in March from SHJ with A320s
-Gulf Air: Starting a new 3x weekly A320 BAH-HBE-BAH
-Kuwait Airways: increasing KWI-ALY flights from 1x weekly to 3x weekly A320 flights.
-Saudi Arabian Airline: increasing flights out of JED and RUH to ALY with MD-90s.

Hey Rob, KU already has 3x weekly A310 flights on the KWI-SSH route (KU537/547). Here is a photo I'm uploading onto A.net at the moment:

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/9KALBSSH.jpg

SV also operate summer only services to Sharm El Sheikh. The flights operate 2x weekly with MD-90s routing RUH-JED-SSH (SV328). MS also have a weekly year round SSH-JED A320 flight (MS667)

Last year MS and GF agreed in principle to start flights between BAH and 'a Red Sea resort' (probably SSH) but nothing materialised and instead MS started 2x weekly SSH-DXB flights.

p.s. it seems Sharm El Sheikh left its mark on you Big grin

Thanks Horus,

Yeah SSH has, I really love that place! Big grin

I did remember seeing a KU A310 on approach to SSH during my stay, but no SV a/c!

I would love to see EK and QR at SSH in the future!

BTW, Great pic. horus!

QR, RJ And IY Add New Destination: Alexandria!

WOW, two more announcements were made today!!!!!

Royal Jordanian has just announced they are also launching their own flights to Alexandria (ALY). The flights will be operated by wholly-owned subsidiary Royal Wings with 3x weekly flights with De Havilland DHC-8 Dash 8s

RJ3600 AMM/ALY 11:30/13:45 1---5-7 Dash-8 2hrs15mins
RJ3601 ALY/AMM 14:15/16:30 1---5-7 Dash-8 2hrs15mins

This will be RJ's third scheduled destination in Egypt after Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh.

So that's the SIXTH airline to announce new flights to Alexandria in so many weeks.

Yemenia who only 1 month ago announced 2x weekly SAH-ALY-SAH flights (IY602/603) starting this summer, have decided to launch a 1x weekly service to Alexandria's other airport, Borg Al Arab (HBE) with B738s from Sana'a (IY600/601) becoming the first airline to serve both Alexandrian Airports (HBE and ALY)

IY600 SAH/HBE 09:30/12:30 -----6- B738 3hrs
IY601 HBE/SAH 13:30/16:30 -----6- B738 3hrs

I have to say I have no idea what is spurring this 'phenomenal' growth at Alexandria. Every airline currently serving the airport is increasing flights and 6 new airlines have announced new flights.

Always good to hear!

Yeah SV flights start June 16th with MD-90s and B777s

For some reason I doubt EK will serve SSH, well at least not in the foreseeable future. We are more likely to see QR, G9 and maybe GF lauch flights there first.

Thanks, I just hope it gets accepted.

p.s I'm trying to get the topic heading changed to show these new flights too.

Rumor has it that QR will also open BHX by year end, in statement from QR on another forum QR said once they receive rights to fly to DEL then BHX would follow. If I'm not mistaken the rights for DEL have now been granted so I eagerly await the announcement of BHX.....

It would be great to see another Middle Eastern carrier at BHX other than Emirates!

I would imagine a AB6 service to BHX?

Horus, which is the major airport at Alexandria, HBE or ALY?

I know that HBE has the larger runway so can accommodate larger A/c!

More than likely will be AB6, that's what they opened MAN with, can't see it being a daily service. Will more than likely be 3-4 times weekly with 2 afternoon departures & 2 evening departure a week. Increasing to daily once 6-12mths later.

So has Gulf Traveler cancelled their proposed BHX route or has it been put on hold indefinitely?

Quoting B742 (Reply 6):

Yes they'd almost certainly use the AB6. The A332 is used on the premium routes and the A320 is too small.

I know that HBE has the larger runway so can accommodate larger A/c!

Al-Noha Airport (ALY) is the older of the two facilities but is the main airport. Almost all carriers serving Alexandria used this airport and it's located only 8km from the city centre. I've used the airport so many times and I think its well organised but the facilities are out dated. The airport can get chaotic even if they're only 2 A320 flights being processed. Airlines prefer to use ALY as it is close to the city centre, has good transport links and offers more connections. The main runway is only 2200m which restricts the aircraft operating into the airport to A320/B737s. Also the surrounding urban growth has had an impact.

Borg Al-Arab Airport (HBE) was a military airbase but a passenger terminal was opened in 1999. The airport is located around 42km from the city centre and the only scheduled operators are British Mediterranean (from LHR), Air Arabia (from SHJ), TUI Belgium (from BRU), and soon Emirates (from DXB) and Yemenia (from SAH). The facilities at the airport are more modern and has very little congestion problems. The airport can handle 747s and landing fees are considerably lower than ALY. The big distance to the city coupled with no transport links has stopped more airlines using the facility

However things are changing. HBE is about to undergo an expansion and renovation programme and in 3 years the authorities plan to close ALY and make HBE the main airport for Alex:

p.s. with all this expansion at ALY/HBE its a shame BMed screwed up their timetable...
