to "check in" no less than 1/2 hour prior to departure, why is there always that one person who takes it to the last minute
To the last minute before the 30 minutes? Or to the last minute before the plane is scheduled to depart?
While I usually try to schedule my arrival at the airport at least 20-30 minutes before check-in closes, I have had the occasional flight where, for a multitude of reasons, that was simply not possible. Then again, I was always still at the airport before the check-in deadline (even if just one minute before), and I've never had any problems whatsoever.
If, on the other hand, an airline would have given away my confirmed seat to a waitlisted passenger before the check-in deadline passes, I, too, would be very displeased... but I'd never take it out on the person sitting at the check-in counter.
To be precise, I once missed a check-in deadline by about 18 minutes - and the check-in deadline for that flight was 20 minutes: the departure time had been moved forward the day before and I hadn't re-checked the time the evening before (something I usually do).
I got checked in without problems, my luggage actually made it onto the plane and so did I - then again, this was a short hop on Eurowings from HAJ
on an ATR42, and that was about 10 years ago... not sure if it would work out that way these days...
